This chapter focuses on the role that group memberships play in shaping social life. It attempts to show the relevance of a social identity perspective to issues and processes of interest to organizational psychologists. We argue that to understand how group relationships affect social interaction in an organizational context, it is important to consider how these are bound up with individuals’ social identities, their definitions of themselves in terms of their group memberships.
