Combined measurement and QCD analysis of the inclusive e ± p scattering cross sections at HERA
A combination is presented of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations in neutral and charged current unpolarised ep scattering at HERA during the period 1994-2000. The data span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, Q^2, and in Bjorken x. The combination method used takes the correlations of systematic uncertainties into account, resulting in an improved accuracy. The combined data are the sole input in a NLO QCD analysis which determines a new set of parton distributions, HERAPDF1.0, with small experimental uncertainties. This set includes an estimate of the model and parametrisation uncertainties of the fit result.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector
The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to the first ep collider, HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, Q2, and in the inverse Bjorken x, while with the design luminosity of 1033 cm-2 s-1 the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The LHeC thus continues the path of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) into unknown areas of physics and kinematics. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a (Q21/x) range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets including new dipole prototypes, cryogenics, RF, and further components. A design study is also presented of a detector suitable to perform high precision DIS measurements in a wide range of acceptance using state-of-the art detector technology, which is modular and of limited size enabling its fast installation. The detector includes tagging devices for electron, photon, proton and neutron detection near to the beam pipe. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It so represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

Combination of measurements of inclusive deep inelastic $${e^{\pm }p}$$ e ± p scattering cross sections and QCD analysis of HERA data
A combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current $$e^{\pm }p$$ scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb $$^{-1}$$ and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, $$Q^2$$ , and Bjorken x. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. In addition to the experimental uncertainties, model and parameterisation uncertainties were assessed for these parton distribution functions. Variants of HERAPDF2.0 with an alternative gluon parameterisation, HERAPDF2.0AG, and using fixed-flavour-number schemes, HERAPDF2.0FF, are presented. The analysis was extended by including HERA data on charm and jet production, resulting in the variant HERAPDF2.0Jets. The inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous determination of these parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible, resulting in $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)=0.1183 \pm 0.0009 \mathrm{(exp)} \pm 0.0005\mathrm{(model/parameterisation)} \pm 0.0012\mathrm{(hadronisation)} ^{+0.0037}_{-0.0030}\mathrm{(scale)}$$ . An extraction of $$xF_3^{\gamma Z}$$ and results on electroweak unification and scaling violations are also presented.

HERAFitter
HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton–proton deep inelastic scattering and proton–proton (proton–antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help to visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. This paper describes the general structure of HERAFitter and its wide choice of options.

Measurement and QCD analysis of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering cross section at HERA
A detailed analysis is presented of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep→eXY, where Y is a proton or a low mass proton excitation carrying a fraction 1-xIP>0.95 of the incident proton longitudinal momentum and the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex satisfies |t|<1 GeV2. Using data taken by the H1 experiment, the cross section is measured for photon virtualities in the range 3.5≤Q2≤1600 GeV2, triple differentially in xIP, Q2 and β=x/xIP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. At low xIP, the data are consistent with a factorisable xIP dependence, which can be described by the exchange of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept αIP(0)=1.118±0.008(exp.)+0.029 -0.010(model). Diffractive parton distribution functions and their uncertainties are determined from a next-to-leading order DGLAP QCD analysis of the Q2 and β dependences of the cross section. The resulting gluon distribution carries an integrated fraction of around 70% of the exchanged momentum in the Q2 range studied. Total and differential cross sections are also measured for the diffractive charged current process e+p→ν̄eXY and are found to be well described by predictions based on the diffractive parton distributions. The ratio of the diffractive to the inclusive neutral current ep cross sections is studied. Over most of the kinematic range, this ratio shows no significant dependence on Q2 at fixed xIP and x or on x at fixed Q2 and β.

First direct observation of time-reversal non-invariance in the neutral-kaon system
We report on the first observation of time-reversal symmetry violation through a comparison of the probabilities of K0 transforming into K0 and K0 into K0 as a function of the neutral-kaon eigentime t. The comparison is based on the analysis of the neutral-kaon semileptonic decays recorded in the CPLEAR experiment. There, the strangeness of the neutral kaon at time t=0 was tagged by the kaon charge in the reaction pp→K±π∓K0(K0) at rest, whereas the strangeness of the kaon at the decay time t=τ was tagged by the lepton charge in the final state. An average decay-rate asymmetry〈R(K0t=0→e+π−νt=τ)−R(K0t=0→e−π+νt=τ)R(K0t=0→e+π−νt=τ)+R(K0t=0→e−π+νt=τ)〉=(6.6±1.3stat±1.0syst)×10−3was measured over the interval 1τS<τ<20τS, thus leading to evidence for time-reversal non-invariance.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
The cross-section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep→eγp has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb−1 of e+p and 16.7 pb−1 of e−p collisions. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the γ∗p system in the region 5<Q2<100 GeV2 and 40<W<140 GeV. The measured cross-sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations.

Combination and QCD analysis of charm production cross section measurements in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Measurements of open charm production cross sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections $\sigma_{\rm red}^{c\bar{c}}$ for charm production are obtained in the kinematic range of photon virtuality 2.5≤Q 2≤2000 GeV2 and Bjorken scaling variable 3⋅10−5≤x≤5⋅10−2. The combination method accounts for the correlations of the systematic uncertainties among the different data sets. The combined charm data together with the combined inclusive deep-inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA are used as input for a detailed NLO QCD analysis to study the influence of different heavy flavour schemes on the parton distribution functions. The optimal values of the charm mass as a parameter in these different schemes are obtained. The implications on the NLO predictions for W ± and Z production cross sections at the LHC are investigated. Using the fixed flavour number scheme, the running mass of the charm quark is determined.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
A measurement is presented of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering e++p→e++γ+p at HERA using data taken with the H1 detector. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon virtuality, Q2, and the invariant mass, W, of the γp system, in the kinematic range 2<Q2<20GeV2, 30<W<120GeV and |t|<1GeV2, where t is the squared momentum transfer to the proton. The measurement is compared to QCD based calculations.

Evidence for a narrow anti-charmed baryon state
A narrow resonance in D∗−p and D∗+p̄ invariant mass combinations is observed in inelastic electron–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 300 GeV and 320 GeV at HERA. The resonance has a mass of 3099±3(stat.)±5(syst.) MeV and a measured Gaussian width of 12±3(stat.) MeV, compatible with the experimental resolution. The resonance is interpreted as an anti-charmed baryon with a minimal constituent quark composition of uuddc̄, together with the charge conjugate.

Diffractive deep-inelastic scattering with a leading proton at HERA
The cross section for the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process $ep \to e X p$ is measured, with the leading final state proton detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The data analysed cover the range \xpom <0.1 in fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss, 0.08 < |t| < 0.5 GeV^{-2} in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, 2 < Q^2 < 50 GeV^2 in photon virtuality and 0.004 < \beta = x / \xpom < 1, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. For $\xpom \lapprox 10^{-2}$, the differential cross section has a dependence of approximately ${\rm d} \sigma / {\rm d} t \propto e^{6 t}$, independently of \xpom, \beta and Q^2 within uncertainties. The cross section is also measured triple differentially in \xpom, \beta and Q^2. The \xpom dependence is interpreted in terms of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept $\alpha_{\pom}(0)=1.114 \pm 0.018 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.012 ({\rm syst.}) ^{+0.040}_{-0.020} ({\rm model})$ and a sub-leading exchange. The data are in good agreement with an H1 measurement for which the event selection is based on a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the final state hadrons, after accounting for proton dissociation contributions in the latter. Within uncertainties, the dependence of the cross section on x and Q^2 can thus be factorised from the dependences on all studied variables which characterise the proton vertex, for both the pomeron and the sub-leading exchange.

Measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section at low Q2 and x at HERA
A measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section is presented in the region of low momentum transfers, 0.2 GeV2 ≤Q 2≤12 GeV2, and low Bjorken x, 5⋅10−6≤x≤0.02. The result is based on two data sets collected in dedicated runs by the H1 Collaboration at HERA at beam energies of 27.6 GeV and 920 GeV for positrons and protons, respectively. A combination with data previously published by H1 leads to a cross section measurement of a few percent accuracy. A kinematic reconstruction method exploiting radiative ep events extends the measurement to lower Q 2 and larger x. The data are compared with theoretical models which apply to the transition region from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering.

A first measurement is reported of the longitudinal proton structure function F_L(x,Q^2) at the ep collider HERA. It is based on inclusive deep inelastic e^+p scattering cross section measurements with a positron beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 575 and 460 GeV. Employing the energy dependence of the cross section, F_L is measured in a range of squared four-momentum transfers 12 < Q^2 < 90 GeV^2 and low Bjorken x 0.00024 < x < 0.0036. The F_L values agree with higher order QCD calculations based on parton densities obtained using cross section data previously measured at HERA.

Combination and QCD analysis of charm and beauty production cross-section measurements in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections are obtained in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared of the photon $$2.5~\hbox {GeV}^2\le Q^2 \le 2000\, \hbox {GeV}^2$$ and Bjorken scaling variable $$3 \cdot 10^{-5} \le x_\mathrm{Bj} \le 5 \cdot 10^{-2}$$ . The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The running charm- and beauty-quark masses are determined as $$m_c(m_c) = 1.290^{+0.046}_{-0.041} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.062}_{-0.014} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.003}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}$$ GeV and $$m_b(m_b) = 4.049^{+0.104}_{-0.109} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.090}_{-0.032} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.001}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}~\mathrm{GeV}$$ .

The H1 silicon vertex detector
The design, construction and performance of the H1 silicon vertex detector is described. It consists of two cylindrical layers of double-sided, double-metal silicon sensors read out by a custom designed analog pipeline chip. The analog signals are transmitted by optical fibres to a custom-designed ADC board and are reduced on PowerPC processors. Details of the design and construction are given and performance figures from the first data-taking periods are presented.

On the rise of the proton structure function F2 towards low x
A measurement of the derivative (d ln F_2 / d lnx)_(Q^2)= -lambda(x,Q^2) of the proton structure function F_2 is presented in the low x domain of deeply inelastic positron-proton scattering. For 5*10^(-5)<=x<=0.01 and Q^2>=1.5 GeV^2, lambda(x,Q^2) is found to be independent of x and to increase linearly with ln(Q^2).

Measurement of D meson production and F2 in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The inclusive production of D∗±(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1<Q2<100 GeV2 and 0.05<y<0.7 an e+p cross section for inclusive D∗± meson production of 8.50±0.42(stat.)+1.21−1.00(syst.) nb is measured in the visible range ptD∗>1.5 GeV and |ηD∗|<1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D∗± meson cross sections are compared to perturbative QCD calculations in two different evolution schemes. The charm contribution to the proton structure, F2c(x,Q2), is determined by extrapolating the visible charm cross section to the full phase space. This contribution is found to rise from about 10% at Q2=1.5 GeV2 to more than 25% at Q2=60 GeV2 corresponding to x values ranging from 5×10−5 to 3×10−3.

Measurement of $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$ and $F_2^{b\bar{b}}$ at low Q2 and x * using the H1 vertex detector at HERA
Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.

Tests of CPT symmetry and quantum mechanics with experimental data from CPLEAR
We use fits to recent published CPLEAR data on neutral kaon decays to π+π− and πeν to constrain the CPT-violation parameters appearing in a formulation of the neutral kaon system as an open quantum-mechanical system. The obtained upper limits of the CPT-violation parameters are approaching the range suggested by certain ideas concerning quantum gravity.

Exclusive photoproduction of ϒ mesons at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reaction gamma p --> Upsilon p has been studied with the ZEUS experiment in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb^{-1}. The measurement covers the kinematic range 60<W<220 GeV and Q^2<1 GeV^2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and Q^2 is the photon virtuality. These results, which represent the analysis of the full ZEUS data sample for this channel, are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD.

Tests of QCD factorisation in the diffractive production of dijets in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction (Q^2<0.01 GeV^2) and deep-inelastic scattering processes (DIS, 4<Q^2<80 GeV^2). The event topology is given by ep-> e X Y, in which the system X, containing at least two jets, is separated from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y by a large rapidity gap. The dijet cross sections are compared with NLO QCD predictions based on diffractive parton densities previously obtained from a QCD analysis of inclusive diffractive DIS cross sections by H1. In DIS, the dijet data are well described, supporting the validity of QCD factorisation. The diffractive DIS dijet data are more sensitive to the diffractive gluon density at high fractional parton momentum than the measurements of inclusive diffractive DIS. In photoproduction, the predicted dijet cross section has to be multiplied by a factor of approximately 0.5 for both direct and resolved photon interactions to describe the measurements. The ratio of measured dijet cross section to NLO prediction in photoproduction is a factor 0.5+-0.1 smaller than the same ratio in DIS. This suppression is the first clear observation of QCD hard scattering factorisation breaking at HERA. The measurements are also compared to the two soft colour neutralisation models SCI and GAL. The SCI model describes diffractive dijet production in DIS but not in photoproduction. The GAL model fails in both kinematic regions.

Measurement of D ± and D 0 production in deep inelastic scattering using a lifetime tag at HERA
The production of D ±- and D 0-mesons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133.6 pb−1. The measurements cover the kinematic range 5<Q 2<1000 GeV2, 0.02<y<0.7, 1.5<p T <15 GeV and |η D |<1.6. Combinatorial background to the D-meson signals is reduced by using the ZEUS microvertex detector to reconstruct displaced secondary vertices. Production cross sections are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD, which is found to describe the data well. Measurements are extrapolated to the full kinematic phase space in order to obtain the open-charm contribution, $F_{2}^{c\bar{c}}$ , to the proton structure function, F 2.

Measurement of open beauty production at HERA
The first observation of open b production in ep collisions is reported. An event sample containing muons and jets has been selected which is enriched in semileptonic b quark decays. The visible cross section σ(ep→bb̄X→μX′)for Q2<1GeV2, 0.1<y<0.8 is measured to be 0.176±0.016(stat.)+0.026−0.017(syst.)nb for the muons to be detected in the range 35°<θμ<130° and p⊥μ>2.0GeV in the laboratory frame. The expected visible cross section based on a NLO QCD calculation is 0.104±0.017nb. The cross sections for electroproduction with Q2<1GeV2 and photoproduction are derived from the data and found to be σ(ep→ebb̄X)=7.1±0.6(stat.)+1.5−1.3(syst.)nb and σ(γp→bb̄X)=111±10(stat.)+23−20(syst.)nb at an average 〈Wγp〉∼180GeV, respectively.

Measurement of meson cross sections at HERA and determination of the gluon density in the proton using NLO QCD
With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D∗ meson production cross sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum transfers Q2 > 3 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around Wγp ≈ 88 GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in the proton, xgg(xg), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range 7.5 × 10−4 < xg < 4 × 10−2 at average scales μ2 = 25 to 50 GeV2. The gluon momentum fraction xg has been obtained from the measured kinematics of the scattered electron and the D∗ meson in the final state. The results compare well with the gluon distribution obtained from the analysis of scaling violations of the proton structure function F2.

An EPR experiment testing the non-separability of the wave function
The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the K0K0 system produced in the reaction pp→K0K0 at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. The results are consistent with the QM non-separability of the wave function and exclude a spontaneous wave-function factorisation at creation (CL >99.99%).

Diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons at HERA
Results on diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb−1. The energy dependence of the diffractive ψ(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/ψ mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative ψ(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as ebt, yields belψ(2S)=(4.31±0.57±0.46) GeV−2, compatible with that of the J/ψ. For the proton dissociative channel the result bpdψ(2S)=(0.59±0.13±0.12) GeV−2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/ψ. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well.

Measurement of inclusive jet production in deep-inelastic scattering at high and determination of the strong coupling
Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron–proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q2>150GeV2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and of the transverse energy ET of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of αs(MZ) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for αs(MZ)=0.1193±0.0014(exp.)−0.0030+0.0047(th.)±0.0016(pdf).

Deep inelastic scattering with leading protons or large rapidity gaps at HERA
The dissociation of virtual photons, $γ^{\star} p \to X p$, in events with a large rapidity gap between $X$ and the outgoing proton, as well as in events in which the leading proton was directly measured, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data cover photon virtualities $Q^2&gt;2$ GeV$^2$ and $γ^{\star} p$ centre-of-mass energies $402$ GeV, where $M_X$ is the mass of the hadronic final state, $X$. Leading protons were detected in the ZEUS leading proton spectrometer. The cross section is presented as a function of $t$, the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and $Φ$, the azimuthal angle between the positron scattering plane and the proton scattering plane. It is also shown as a function of $Q^2$ and $\xpom$, the fraction of the proton's momentum carried by the diffractive exchange, as well as $β$, the Bjorken variable defined with respect to the diffractive exchange.

Measurement of isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering
Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320pb^-1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E_T < 15 GeV and -0.7 < eta < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q^2, in the range 10 < Q^2 < 350 GeV and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W_X> 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q^2, x, E_T and eta. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range.

Search for single-top production in ep collisions at HERA
A search for single-top production, ep→etX, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb−1. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions involving a neutral electroweak vector boson, γ or Z. The result was combined with a previous ZEUS result yielding a total luminosity of 0.50 fb−1. A 95% credibility level upper limit of 0.13 pb was obtained for the cross section at the centre-of-mass energy of s=315 GeV.

Inclusive-jet photoproduction at HERA and determination of
Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep→e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2<1 GeV2 and γp centre-of-mass energies in the region 142<Wγp<293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, ηjet, for jets with ETjet>17 GeV and −1<ηjet<2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of ηjet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high ηjet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(αs2) terms. Values of αs(MZ) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of αs(MZ) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is αs(MZ)=0.1206−0.0022+0.0023(exp.)−0.0035+0.0042(th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.

Measurement of elastic electroproduction of mesons at HERA
The elastic electroproduction of φ mesons is studied at HERA with the H1 detector for photon virtualities 1<Q2<15GeV2 and hadronic centre of mass energies 40<W<130 GeV. The Q2 and t dependences of the cross section are extracted (t being the square of the four-momentum transfer to the target proton). When plotted as function of (Q2 + MV2) and scaled by the appropriate SU(5) quark charge factor, the φ meson cross section agrees within errors with the cross sections of the vector mesons V = ρ, ω and J/ψ. A detailed analysis is performed of the φ meson polarisation state and the ratio of the production cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarised φ mesons is determined. A small but significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) is observed.

Inclusive production of D + , D 0, D s + and D * + mesonsin deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive production cross sections are measured in deep inelastic scattering at HERA for meson states composed of a charm quark and a light antiquark or the charge conjugate.The measurements cover the kinematic region of photon virtuality 2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 , inelasticity 0.05 < y < 0.7, D meson transverse momenta p t (D) ≥ 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D)| ≤ 1.5.The identification of the D-meson decays and the reduction of the combinatorial background profit from the reconstruction of displaced secondary vertices by means of the H1 silicon vertex detector.The production of charmed mesons containing the light quarks u, d and s is found to be compatible with a description in which the hard scattering is followed by a factorisable and universal hadronisation process.

Dijet cross sections and parton densities in diffractive DIS at HERA
Differential dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 51.5 pb-1. The selected events are of the type ep --> eXY, where the system X contains at least two jets and is well separated in rapidity from the low mass proton dissociation system Y. The dijet data are compared with QCD predictions at next-to-leading order based on diffractive parton distribution functions previously extracted from measurements of inclusive diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. The prediction describes the dijet data well at low and intermediate zpom (the fraction of the momentum of the diffractive exchange carried by the parton entering the hard interaction) where the gluon density is well determined from the inclusive diffractive data, supporting QCD factorisation. A new set of diffractive parton distribution functions is obtained through a simultaneous fit to the diffractive inclusive and dijet cross sections. This allows for a precise determination of both the diffractive quark and gluon distributions in the range 0.05<zpom<0.9. In particular, the precision on the gluon density at high momentum fractions is improved compared to previous extractions.

Combined inclusive diffractive cross sections measured with forward proton spectrometers in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A combination of the inclusive diffractive cross section measurements made by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA is presented. The analysis uses samples of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering data at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV where leading protons are detected by dedicated spectrometers. Correlations of systematic uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in an improved precision of the cross section measurement which reaches 6% for the most precise points. The combined data cover the range 2.5 < Q2 < 200 GeV2 in photon virtuality, 0.00035 < xIP < 0.09 in proton fractional momentum loss, 0.09 < |t| < 0.55 GeV2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 0.0018 < beta < 0.816 in beta = x/xIP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable.

Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass
The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q 2 < 1000 GeV2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb−1. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q 2, Bjorken x, jet trans- verse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q 2. The running beauty-quark mass, m b at the scale m b , was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be m b (m b ) = 4.07 ± 0.14 (fit) − 0.07 + 0.01 (mod.) − 0.00 + 0.05 (param.) − 0.05 + 0.08 (theo.) GeV.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN
This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100)\,fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

Deep inelastic cross-section measurements at large<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>y</mml:mi></mml:math>with the ZEUS detector at HERA
The reduced cross sections for $e^{+}p$ deep inelastic scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different centre-of-mass energies, $318$, $251$ and $225$ GeV. The cross sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken $x$ and the virtuality, $Q^2$, were obtained in the region $0.13\ \leq\ y\ \leq\ 0.75$, where $y$ denotes the inelasticity and $5\ \leq\ Q^2\ \leq\ 110$ GeV$^2$. The proton structure functions $F_2$ and $F_L$ were extracted from the measured cross sections.

A determination of the CPT violation parameter Re(δ)from the semileptonic decay of strangeness-tagged neutral kaons
We have improved by two orders of magnitude the limit currently available for the CPT violation parameter Re(δ). To this purpose we have analyzed the full sample of neutral-kaon decays to eπν recorded in the CPLEAR experiment, where the strangeness of the neutral kaons was tagged at production and decay time. An appropriate function of the measured decay rates, including information from the analysis of π+π− decay channel, gives directly Re(δ). The result Re(δ)=(3.0±3.3stat±0.6syst)×10−4 is compatible with zero. Values for the parameters Im(δ), Re(x−) and Im(x+) were also obtained.

Physics with ARGUS
The impact of the ARGUS experiment to elementary particle physics is reviewed. More than ten years of data taking has allowed ARGUS to contribute significantly to our understanding of beauty and charmed hadrons, τ Leptons, ϒ mesons, ϒϒ interactions and fragmentation processes. In particular the ARGUS measurements of CKM matrix elements opened up a new window on the Standard Model.

Measurement of beauty production at HERA using events with muons and jets
A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data.

Diffractive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons with large momentum transfer at HERA
The diffractive photoproduction of J/psi mesons is measured with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb^-1. The differential cross section d sigma(gamma p -> J/psi Y) / d t is studied in the range 2 < |t| < 30 GeV^2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W in three t intervals, spanning the range 50 < W < 200 GeV. A fast rise of the cross section with W is observed for each t range and the slope for the effective linear Pomeron trajectory is measured to be alpha^\prime= -0.0135 \pm 0.0074 (stat.) \pm 0.0051 (syst.) GeV^-2. The measurements are compared with perturbative QCD models based on BFKL and DGLAP evolution. The data are found to be compatible with s-channel helicity conservation.

Search for single top quark production in ep collisions at HERA
A search for single top quark production is performed in e^\pm p collisions at HERA. The search exploits data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 118.3 pb^-1. A model for the anomalous production of top quarks in a flavour changing neutral current process involving a t-u-gamma coupling is investigated. Decays of top quarks into a b quark and a W boson are considered in the leptonic and the hadronic decay channels of the W. Both a cut-based analysis and a multivariate likelihood analysis are performed to discriminate anomalous top quark production from Standard Model background processes. In the leptonic channel, 5 events are found while 1.31 \pm 0.22 events are expected from the Standard Model background. In the hadronic channel, no excess above the expectation for Standard Model processes is found. These observations lead to a cross section \sigma (ep -> e t X) = 0.29 +0.15 -0.14 pb at \sqrt{s} = 319 GeV. Alternatively, assuming that the observed events are due to a statistical fluctuation, upper limits of 0.55 pb on the anomalous top production cross section and of 0.27 on the t-u-gamma coupling \kappa_{t-u-gamma} are established at the 95% confidence level.

Diffractive open charm production in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of diffractive open charm production at HERA. The event topology is given by ep→eXY where the system X contains at least one charmed hadron and is well separated by a large rapidity gap from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y. Two analysis techniques are used for the cross section measurements. In the first, the charm quark is tagged by the reconstruction of a D*±(2010) meson. This technique is used in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction (γp). In the second, a method based on the displacement of tracks from the primary vertex is used to measure the open charm contribution to the inclusive diffractive cross section in DIS. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton density functions previously obtained from a QCD analysis of the inclusive diffractive cross section at H1. A good agreement is observed in the full kinematic regime, which supports the validity of QCD factorization for open charm production in diffractive DIS and γp.

Measurement of high-Q 2 neutral current deep inelastic e − p scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised electron beam at HERA
Measurements of the neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e^- p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised electron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections dsigma/dQ^2, dsigma/dx and dsigma/dy and the double-differential cross sections in Q^2 and x are measured in the kinematic region y < 0.9 and Q^2 > 185 GeV^2 for both positively and negatively polarised electron beams and for each polarisation state separately. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 169.9 pb^-1 taken with the ZEUS detector in 2005 and 2006 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions xF_3 and xF_3^{\gamma Z} are determined by combining the e^- p results presented in this paper with previously measured e^+ p neutral current data. The asymmetry parameter A^- is used to demonstrate the parity violating effects of electroweak interactions at large spacelike photon virtuality. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model.

A general search for new phenomena at HERA
A model--independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed using the full $e^\pm p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. All event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with transverse momenta above 20 GeV are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A dedicated algorithm is used to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or the invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. Variables related to angular distributions and energy sharing between final state particles are also introduced to study the final state topologies. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed in the phase space covered by this analysis.

Measurement of charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised electron beam at HERA
Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e − p collisions with longitudinally polarised electron beams are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 175 pb−1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is given for positively and negatively polarised electron beams. The differential cross-sections d σ/dQ 2, d σ/dx and d σ/dy are presented for Q 2>200 GeV2. The double-differential cross-section d 2 σ/dxdQ 2 is presented in the kinematic range 280<Q 2<30 000 GeV2 and 0.015<x<0.65. The measured cross sections are compared with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of high-Q 2 charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised positron beam at HERA
Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e + p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 132 pb−1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is presented at positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beams. The single-differential cross-sections dσ/dQ 2, dσ/dx and dσ/dy are presented for Q 2>200 GeV2. The reduced cross-section $\tilde{\sigma}$ is presented in the kinematic range 200<Q 2<60 000 GeV2 and 0.006<x<0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson.

Two-particle azimuthal correlations as a probe of collective behaviour in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering with virtuality Q2> 5 GeV2 at a centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 318 GeV recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The correlations of charged particles have been measured in the range of laboratory pseudorapidity −1.5 < η < 2.0 and transverse momentum 0.1 < pT< 5.0 GeV and event multiplicities Nch up to six times larger than the average 〈Nch〉 ≈ 5. The two-particle correlations have been measured in terms of the angular observables cn{2} = 〈〈cosnΔφ〉〉, where n is between 1 and 4 and ∆φ is the relative azimuthal angle between the two particles. Comparisons with available models of deep inelastic scattering, which are tuned to reproduce inclusive particle production, suggest that the measured two-particle correlations are dominated by contributions from multijet production. The correlations observed here do not indicate the kind of collective behaviour recently observed at the highest RHIC and LHC energies in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions.

The CPLEAR detector at CERN
The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using K0 and K0 produced by the annihilation of p's in a hydrogen gas target. The K0 and K0 are identified by their companion products of the annihilation K±π∓ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the subdetectors are described.

Determination of the T- and CPT-violation parameters in the neutral-kaon system using the Bell–Steinberger relation and data from CPLEAR
Data from the CPLEAR experiment, together with the most recent world averages for some of the neutral-kaon parameters, were constrained with the Bell–Steinberger (or unitarity) relation, allowing the T-violation parameter Re(ϵ) and the CPT-violation parameter Im(δ) of the neutral-kaon mixing matrix to be determined with an increased accuracy: Re(ϵ)=(164.9±2.5)×10−5, Im(δ)=(2.4±5.0)×10−5. Moreover, the constraint allows the CPT-violation parameter for the neutral-kaon semileptonic decays, Re(y), to be determined for the first time. The ΔS≠ΔQ parameters Re(x−) and Im(x+) are given with an increased accuracy. The quantity Re(y+x−), which enters the T-violation CPLEAR asymmetry previously published, is determined to be (−0.2±0.3)×10−3. The value obtained for Re(δ) is in agreement with the one resulting from a previous unconstrained fit and has a slightly smaller error.

Physics at CPLEAR
LEAR offered unique opportunities to study the symmetries which exist between matter and antimatter. At variance with other approaches at this facility, CPLEAR was an experiment devoted to the study of CP, T and CPT symmetries in the neutral-kaon system. A variety of measurements allowed us to determine with high precision the parameters which describe the time evolution of the neutral kaons and their antiparticles, including decay amplitudes, and the related symmetry properties. Limits concerning quantum-mechanical predictions (EPR, coherence of the wave function) or the equivalence principle of general relativity have been obtained. A general search for new phenomena in ep scattering at HERA
A model-independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed in e+p and e−p collisions at HERA using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117pb−1. For the first time all event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with high transverse momenta are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A statistical algorithm is developed to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. A good agreement with the Standard Model prediction is observed in most of the event classes. The most significant deviation is found for a topology containing an isolated muon, missing transverse momentum and a jet, consistent with a previously reported observation.

Isolated electrons and muons in events with missing transverse momentum at HERA
A search for events with a high-energy isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum has been performed at the electron–proton collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 13.6 pb−1 in e−p scattering and 104.7 pb−1 in e+p scattering. Within the Standard Model such events are expected to be mainly due to W boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. In e−p interactions one event is observed in the electron channel and none in the muon channel, consistent with the expectation of the Standard Model. In the e+p data a total of 18 events are seen in the electron and muon channels compared to an expectation of 12.4±1.7 dominated by W production (9.4±1.6). Whilst the overall observed number of events is broadly in agreement with the number predicted by the Standard Model, there is an excess of events with transverse momentum of the hadronic system greater than 25 GeV with 10 events found compared to 2.9±0.5 expected. The results are used to determine the cross-section for events with an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum.

Study of charm fragmentation into D * ± mesons in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The process of charm quark fragmentation is studied using D * ± meson production in deep-inelastic scattering as measured by the H1 detector at HERA. The parameters of fragmentation functions are extracted for QCD models based on leading order matrix elements and DGLAP or CCFM evolution of partons together with string fragmentation and particle decays. Additionally, they are determined for a next-to-leading order QCD calculation in the fixed flavour number scheme using the independent fragmentation of charm quarks to D * ± mesons. Two different regions of phase space are investigated defined by the presence or absence of a jet containing the D * ± meson in the event. The fragmentation parameters extracted for the two phase space regions are found to be different.

Inclusive-jet cross sections in NC DIS at HERA and a comparison of the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msub><mml:mi>k</mml:mi><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:math>, anti-<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si2.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msub><mml:mi>k</mml:mi><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:math> and SIScone jet algorithms
For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q2>125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb−1 and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the kT algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(αs3) terms. Values of αs(MZ) were extracted from the data; the results are compatible with and have similar precision to the value extracted from the kT analysis.

Search for first-generation leptoquarks at HERA
A search for first-generation leptoquarks was performed in electron-proton and positron-proton collisions recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA in 2003-2007 using an integrated luminosity of 366 pb^-1. Final states with an electron and jets or with missing transverse momentum and jets were analysed, searching for resonances or other deviations from the Standard Model predictions. No evidence for any leptoquark signal was found. The data were combined with data previously taken at HERA, resulting in a total integrated luminosity of 498 pb^-1. Limits on the Yukawa coupling, lambda, of leptoquarks were set as a function of the leptoquark mass for different leptoquark types within the Buchmueller-Rueckl-Wyler model. Leptoquarks with a coupling lambda=0.3 are excluded for masses up to 699 GeV.

Charm, beauty and top at HERA
Results on open charm and beauty production and on the search for top production in high-energy electron–proton collisions at HERA are reviewed. This includes a discussion of relevant theoretical aspects, a summary of the available measurements and measurement techniques, and their impact on improved understanding of QCD and its parameters, such as parton density functions and charm- and beauty-quark masses. The impact of these results on measurements at the LHC and elsewhere is also addressed.

HERAFitter, Open Source QCD Fit Project
HERAFitter is an open-source package that provides a framework for the determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton and for many different kinds of analyses in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). It encodes results from a wide range of experimental measurements in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering and proton-proton (proton-antiproton) collisions at hadron colliders. These are complemented with a variety of theoretical options for calculating PDF-dependent cross section predictions corresponding to the measurements. The framework covers a large number of the existing methods and schemes used for PDF determination. The data and theoretical predictions are brought together through numerous methodological options for carrying out PDF fits and plotting tools to help visualise the results. While primarily based on the approach of collinear factorisation, HERAFitter also provides facilities for fits of dipole models and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. The package can be used to study the impact of new precise measurements from hadron colliders. This paper describes the general structure of HERAFitter and its wide choice of options.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions
Abstract The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

Search for compositeness, leptoquarks and large extra dimensions in eq contact interactions at HERA
The reaction e+p→e+X is studied with the H1 detector at Hera. The data cover momentum transfers Q2 between 200GeV2 and 30000GeV2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.6pb−1. The differential cross section dσ/dQ2 is compared to the Standard Model expectation for neutral current scattering and analysed to search for (ēe)(q̄q) contact interactions. No evidence for new phenomena is observed. The results are used to set limits on scales within models of electron–quark compositeness, quark form factors and the exchange of virtual heavy leptoquarks. A search for gravitational effects mediated through the exchange of virtual gravitons which propagate into large extra dimensions is presented.

Search for leptoquark bosons in ep collisions at HERA
A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e+p and e−p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117pb−1. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum. Constraints on leptoquark models are established. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength, leptoquarks with masses up to 275–325GeV are ruled out at 95% confidence level. These limits improve and supercede earlier H1 limits based on subsamples of the data used here.

Inclusive dijet production at low Bjorken-x in deep inelastic scattering
Dijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering is investigated in the region of low values of the Bjorken-variable x (10 -4 < x < 10 -2 ) and low photon virtualities Q 2 (5 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 ).The measured dijet cross sections are compared with perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order.For most dijet variables studied, these calculations can provide a reasonable description of the data over the full phase space region covered, including the region of very low x.However, large discrepancies are observed for events with small separation in azimuth between the two highest transverse momentum jets.This region of phase space is described better by predictions based on the CCFM evolution equation, which incorporates k t factorized unintegrated parton distributions.A reasonable description is also obtained using the Color Dipole Model or models incorporating virtual photon structure.

Inclusive D*± meson and associated dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive D*± production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA with the H1 detector. In addition, the production of dijets in events with a D*± meson is investigated. The analysis covers values of photon virtuality 2 ≤ Q2 ≤ 100 GeV2 and of inelasticity 0.05≤y≤0.7. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and x and of various D*± meson and jet observables. Within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties all measured cross sections are found to be adequately described by next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, based on the photon–gluon fusion process and DGLAP evolution, without the need for an additional resolved component of the photon beyond what is included at NLO. A reasonable description of the data is also achieved by a prediction based on the CCFM evolution of partons involving the kT-unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton.

Running of the charm-quark mass from HERA deep-inelastic scattering data
Combined HERA data on charm production in deep-inelastic scattering have previously been used to determine the charm-quark running mass mc(mc) in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme. Here, the same data are used as a function of the photon virtuality Q2 to evaluate the charm-quark running mass at different scales to one-loop order, in the context of a next-to-leading order QCD analysis. The scale dependence of the mass is found to be consistent with QCD expectations.

Tests of the Equivalence Principle with neutral kaons
We test the Principle of Equivalence for particles and antiparticles, using CPLEAR data on tagged K0 and K0bar decays into pi^+ pi^-. For the first time, we search for possible annual, monthly and diurnal modulations of the observables |eta_{+-}| and phi_{+-}, that could be correlated with variations in astrophysical potentials. Within the accuracy of CPLEAR, the measured values of |eta_{+-}| and phi_{+-} are found not to be correlated with changes of the gravitational potential. We analyze data assuming effective scalar, vector and tensor interactions, and we conclude that the Principle of Equivalence between particles and antiparticles holds to a level of 6.5, 4.3 and 1.8 x 10^{-9}, respectively, for scalar, vector and tensor potentials originating from the Sun with a range much greater than the distance Earth-Sun. We also study energy-dependent effects that might arise from vector or tensor interactions. Finally, we compile upper limits on the gravitational coupling difference between K0 and K0bar as a function of the scalar, vector and tensor interaction range.

Forward jet and particle production at HERA
Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Predictions based on the DGLAP approach fail to describe the data, except for those which allow for a resolved photon contribution.

Measurement of the CP violation parameter η+− using tagged K0 and 0
The CP violation parameter η+− is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K0 and K0 decaying to π+π−. The obtained values are |η+−| = (2.312 ± 0.043stat. ± 0.030syst. ± 0.011τs) × 10−3 and Φ+− = 42.7° ± 0.9stat.° ± 0.6syst.° ± 0.9Δm° with Δ = (527.4 ± 2.9) × 107h̵gs−1 measured in the same experiment using the semileptonic decay channel.

A determination of the CP violation parameter η+− from the decay of strangeness-tagged neutral kaons
We report a measurement of the CP violation parameter η+− from the time-dependent asymmetry between the decay rates of initially tagged K0 and K0. The results are based on the complete data sample collected by the CPLEAR collaboration. With Δm=(530.1±1.4)×107ℏs−1 and τS=(89.34±0.08) ps, the values obtained are |η+−|=(2.264±0.023stat±0.026syst±0.007τS)×10−3 and φ+−=43.19°±0.53°stat±0.28°syst±0.42°Δm.

Measurement of the KL–KS mass difference using semileptonic decays of tagged neutral kaons
We report on a new measurement of the KL–KS mass difference Δm using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to eπν. The result is Δm=(0.5295±0.0020stat±0.0003syst)×1010 ℏ/s. It includes earlier data reported in R. Adler et al., CPLEAR Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 363 (1995) 237. A measurement of the ΔS=ΔQ violating parameter Re(x) is also obtained.

Measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is presented based on data with an integrated luminosity of 21.1 pb−1. The measurement is performed for photon virtualities Q2 between 5 and 100 GeV2, differentially in Q2, in the jet transverse energy ET, in ET2/Q2 and in the pseudorapidity ηlab. With the renormalization scale μR=ET, perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order (NLO) give a good description of the data in most of the phase space. Significant discrepancies are observed only for jets in the proton beam direction with ET below 20 GeV and Q2 below 20 GeV2. This corresponds to the region in which NLO corrections are largest and further improvement of the calculations is thus of particular interest.

A determination of electroweak parameters at HERA
Using the deep inelastic e^+p and e^-p charged and neutral current scattering cross sections previously published, a combined electroweak and QCD analysis is performed to determine electroweak parameters accounting for their correlation with parton distributions. The data used have been collected by the H1 experiment in 1994-2000 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 117.2 pb^{-1}. A measurement is obtained of the W propagator mass in charged current ep scattering. The weak mixing angle sin^2 theta_W is determined in the on-mass-shell renormalisation scheme. A first measurement at HERA is made of the light quark weak couplings to the Z^0 boson and a possible contribution of right-handed isospin components to the weak couplings is investigated.

Search for doubly-charged Higgs boson production at HERA
A search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons H^{\pm \pm} in ep collisions is presented. The signal is searched for via the Higgs decays into a high mass pair of same charge leptons, one of them being an electron. The analysis uses up to 118 pb^{-1} of ep data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. No evidence for doubly-charged Higgs production is observed and mass dependent upper limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings h_{el} of the Higgs boson to an electron-lepton pair. Assuming that the doubly-charged Higgs only decays into an electron and a muon via a coupling of electromagnetic strength h_{e \mu} = \sqrt{4 \pi \alpha_{em}} = 0.3, a lower limit of 141 GeV on the H^{\pm\pm} mass is obtained at the 95% confidence level. For a doubly-charged Higgs decaying only into an electron and a tau and a coupling h_{e\tau} = 0.3, masses below 112 GeV are ruled out.

Measurement of charm and beauty photoproduction at HERA using <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>D</mml:mi><mml:mo>*</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>μ</mml:mi></mml:math> correlations
A measurement of charm and beauty photoproduction at the electron proton collider HERA is presented based on the simultaneous detection of a D*± meson and a muon. The correlation between the D* meson and the muon serves to separate the charm and beauty contributions and the analysis provides comparable sensitivity to both. The total and differential experimental cross sections are compared to LO and NLO QCD calculations. The measured charm cross section is in good agreement with QCD predictions including higher order effects while the beauty cross section is higher.

Measurement of charm and beauty dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 vertex detector
A measurement of charm and beauty dijet photoproduction cross sections at the ep collider HERA is presented. Events are selected with two or more jets of transverse momentum $p_t^{jet}_{1(2)}>11(8)$ GeV in the central range of pseudo-rapidity $-0.9<\eta^{jet}_{1(2)}<1.3$. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 central vertex detector. Differential dijet cross sections for charm and beauty, and their relative contributions to the flavour inclusive dijet photoproduction cross section, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading jet, the average pseudo-rapidity of the two jets and the observable $x_{\gamma}^{obs}$. Taking into account the theoretical uncertainties, the charm cross sections are consistent with a QCD calculation in next-to-leading order, while the predicted cross sections for beauty production are somewhat lower than the measurement.

Inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Single- and double-differential inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb^-1. The measurement was performed at large values of the photon virtuality, Q^2, between 125 and 20000 GeV^2. The jets were reconstructed with the k_T cluster algorithm in the Breit reference frame and selected by requiring their transverse energies in the Breit frame, E_T,B^jet, to be larger than 8 GeV. In addition, the invariant mass of the dijet system, M_jj, was required to be greater than 20 GeV. The cross sections are described by the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD.

Measurement of beauty production in DIS and extraction at ZEUS
Beauty production in deep inelastic scattering with events in which a muon and a jet are observed in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb^-1. The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q^2 &gt; 2 Gev^2, and inelasticity, 0.05 &lt; y &lt; 0.7, with the requirement of a muon and a jet. Total and differential cross sections are presented and compared to QCD predictions. The beauty contribution to the structure function F_2 was extracted and is compared to theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the t dependence in exclusive photoproduction of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:mi>ϒ</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mn>1</mml:mn><mml:mi>S</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo></mml:math> mesons at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reaction gamma p -> Upsilon(1S) p has been studied with the ZEUS detector in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb^-1. The measurement covers the kinematic range 60<W<220 GeV and Q^2<1 GeV^2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and Q^2 is the photon virtuality. The exponential slope, b, of the t dependence of the cross section, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, has been measured, yielding b = 4.3 +2.0 -1.3 (stat.) +0.5 -0.6 (syst.) GeV^-2. This constitutes the first measurement of the t dependence of the gamma p -> Upsilon(1S) p cross section.

Measurement of high-<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup></mml:math>neutral current deep inelastic<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo mathvariant="bold">+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math>scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarized positron beam at HERA
Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in ${e}^{+}p$ collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarized positron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/d{Q}^{2}$, $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dx$ and $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy$ and the reduced cross section $\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ are measured in the kinematic region ${Q}^{2}&gt;185\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ and $y&lt;0.9$, where ${Q}^{2}$ is the four-momentum transfer squared, $x$ the Bjorken scaling variable and $y$ the inelasticity of the interaction. The measurements are performed separately for positively and negatively polarized positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of $135.5\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a center-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions ${\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{F}}_{3}$ and ${F}_{3}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}Z}$ are determined by combining the ${e}^{+}p$ results presented in this paper with previously published ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter ${A}^{+}$ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass
The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q 2 < 1000 GeV2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb−1. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q 2, Bjorken x, jet trans- verse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q 2. The running beauty-quark mass, m b at the scale m b , was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be m b (m b ) = 4.07 ± 0.14 (fit) − 0.07 + 0.01 (mod.) − 0.00 + 0.05 (param.) − 0.05 + 0.08 (theo.) GeV.

Search for new physics in e±q contact interactions at HERA
Deep-inelastic e±p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q2 up to 30 000 GeV2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the Hera centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements dσ/dQ2, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb−1 of e−p data and 100.8 pb−1 of e+p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales Λ ranging between 1.6–5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M/λ>0.3–1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of MS>0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of Rq<1.0×10−18 m.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B
The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Search for excited electrons in ep collisions at HERA
A search for excited electrons is performed using the full $e^{\pm}p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to a total luminosity of 475 pb$^{-1}$. The electroweak decays of excited electrons ${e}^{*}\to{e}{\gamma}$, ${e}^{*}\to{e}Z$ and ${e}^{*}{\to}\nu W$ with subsequent hadronic or leptonic decays of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons are considered. No evidence for excited electron production is found. Mass dependent exclusion limits on $e^*$ production cross sections and on the ratio $f/{\Lambda}$ of the coupling to the compositeness scale are derived within gauge mediated models. These limits extend the excluded region compared to previous excited electron searches. The $e^*$ production via contact interactions is also addressed for the first time in $ep$ collisions.

Multi-lepton production at high transverse momenta in ep collisions at HERA
Processes leading to a final state with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the full e±p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 463 pb−1. Di-lepton and tri-lepton event classes are investigated. Cross sections of the production of e+e− and μ+μ− pairs are derived in a restricted phase space dominated by photon–photon collisions. In general, good agreement is found with Standard Model predictions. Events are observed with a total scalar sum of lepton transverse momenta above 100GeV where the Standard Model expectation is low. In this region, combining di-lepton and tri-lepton classes, five events are observed in e+p collisions, compared to a Standard Model expectation of 0.96±0.12, while no such event is observed in e−p data for 0.64±0.09 expected.

Measurement of isolated photon production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The production of isolated photons in deep-inelastic scattering $ep\to e \gamma X$ is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared $4<Q^2<150 $~GeV$^2$ and a mass of the hadronic system $W_X>50$ GeV. The analysis is based on a total integrated luminosity of 227~pb$^{-1}$. The production cross section of isolatedphotons with a transverse energy in the range $3 < E_T^\gamma < 10$ GeV and pseudorapidity range $-1.2 < \eta^\gamma < 1.8$ is measured as a function of $E_T^\gamma$, $\eta^\gamma$ and $Q^2$. Isolated photon cross sections are also measured for events with no jets or at least one hadronic jet. The measurements are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo generators modelling the photon radiation from the quark and the electron lines, as well as with calculations at leading and next to leading order in the strong coupling. The predictions significantly underestimate the measured cross sections.

Events with isolated leptons and missing transverse momentum and measurement of W production at HERA
Events with high energy isolated electrons, muons or tau leptons and missing transverse momentum are studied using the full e^\pm p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 474 pb^{-1}. Within the Standard Model, events with isolated leptons and missing transverse momentum mainly originate from the production of single W bosons. The total single W boson production cross section is measured as 1.14 \pm 0.25 (stat.) \pm 0.14 (sys.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The data are also used to establish limits on the WW\gamma gauge couplings and for a measurement of the W boson polarisation.

Measurement of D*± production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A bstract The production of D *± mesons in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for exchanged photon virtualities 5 &lt; Q 2 &lt; 1000 GeV 2 , using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb −1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Differential cross sections have been measured and compared to next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The cross-sections are used to extract the charm contribution to the proton structure functions, expressed in terms of the reduced charm cross section, $ \sigma_{\mathrm{red}}^{{c\overline{c}}} $ . Theoretical calculations based on fits to inclusive HERA data are compared to the results.

Production of the excited charm mesons and at HERA
The production of the excited charm mesons D1(2420) and D2⁎(2460) in ep collisions has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373pb−1. The masses of the neutral and charged states, the widths of the neutral states, and the helicity parameter of D1(2420)0 were determined and compared with other measurements and with theoretical expectations. The measured helicity parameter of the D10 allows for some mixing of S- and D-waves in its decay to D⁎±π∓. The result is also consistent with a pure D-wave decay. Ratios of branching fractions of the two decay modes of the D2⁎(2460)0 and D2⁎(2460)± states were measured and compared with previous measurements. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into D1 and D2⁎ were measured and are consistent with those obtained in e+e− annihilations.

Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic $$e^\pm p$$ scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 372 pb $$^{-1}$$ . The measurement was performed for $$\gamma ^{*}$$ –p centre-of-mass energies in the range $$90< W < {250}\,{\mathrm{GeV}}$$ and for photon virtualities $$Q^2 > {25}\,{\mathrm{GeV}^{2}}$$ . Energy flows around the jet axis are presented. The cross section is presented as a function of $$\beta $$ and $$\phi $$ , where $$\beta =x/x_\mathrm{I\!P}$$ , x is the Bjorken variable and $$x_\mathrm{I\!P}$$ is the proton fractional longitudinal momentum loss. The angle $$\phi $$ is defined by the $$\gamma ^{*}$$ –dijet plane and the $$\gamma ^{*}$$ – $$e^\pm $$ plane in the rest frame of the diffractive final state. The $$\phi $$ cross section is measured in bins of $$\beta $$ . The results are compared to predictions from models based on different assumptions about the nature of the diffractive exchange.

Combined QCD and electroweak analysis of HERA data
A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. The input data are the neutral current and charged current inclusive cross sections which were previously used in the QCD analysis leading to the HERAPDF2.0 PDFs. In addition, the polarization of the electron beam was taken into account for the ZEUS data recorded between 2004 and 2007. Results on the vector and axial-vector couplings of the $Z$ boson to $u$- and $d$-type quarks, on the value of the electroweak mixing angle and the mass of the $W$ boson are presented. The values obtained for the electroweak parameters are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A bstract A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:msqrt> </mml:math> = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S) in exclusive photoproduction at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reactions $\gamma p \to J/\psi(1S) p$ and $\gamma p \to \psi(2S) p$ have been measured at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb$^{-1}$. The measurement was made in the kinematic range $30 < W < 180$ GeV, $Q^2 < 1$ GeV$^2$ and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $W$ is the photon--proton centre-of-mass energy, $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, $\psi(2S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $\psi(2S) \to J/\psi(1S) \pi^+ \pi^-$ with subsequent decay $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The ratio of the production cross sections, $R = \sigma_{\psi(2S)} / \sigma_{J/\psi(1S)}$, has been measured as a function of $W$ and $|t|$ and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.

Measurement of internal jet structure in dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Internal jet structure in dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. Jets with transverse energies ET,Breit > 5 GeV are selected in the Breit frame employing k⊥ and cone jet algorithms. In the kinematic region of ssquared momentum transfers 10 < Q2 ⪅s 120 GeV2 and Bjorken−x values 2 < 10−4 ⪅ xBj ⪅ 8 × 10−3, jet shapes and subjet multiplicities are measured as a function of a resolution parameter. Distributions of both observables are corrected for detector effects and presented as functions of the transverse jet energy and jet pseudo-rapidity. Dependences of the jet shape and the average number of subjets on the transverse energy and the pseudo-rapidity of the jet are observed. With increasing transverse jet energies and decreasing pseudo-rapidities, i.e. towards the photon hemisphere, the jets are more collimated. QCD models give a fair description of the data.

Three-jet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Three-jet production is studied for the first time in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The measurement carried out with the H1 detector at HERA covers a large range of four-momentum transfer squared 5 < Q^2 < 5000 GeV^2 and invariant three-jet masses 25 < M_(3jet) < 140 GeV. Jets are defined by the inclusive k_T algorithm in the Breit frame. The size of the three-jet cross section and the ratio of the three-jet to the dijet cross section R_(3/2) are described over the whole phase space by the predictions of perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order. The shapes of angular jet distributions deviate significantly from a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by the QCD calculation.

Search for odderon-induced contributions to exclusive π0 photoproduction at HERA
A search for contributions to the reaction ep→eπ0N∗ from photon–odderon fusion in the photoproduction regime at HERA is reported, at an average photon–proton centre-of-mass energy 〈W〉=215 GeV. The measurement proceeds via detection of the π0 decay photons, a leading neutron from the N∗ decay, and the scattered electron. No π0 signal is observed and an upper limit on the cross section for the photon–odderon fusion process of σ(γp→π0N∗)<49 nb at the 95% confidence level is derived, integrated over the experimentally accessible range of the squared four-momentum transfer at the nucleon vertex 0.02<|t|<0.3 GeV2. This excludes a recent prediction from a calculation based on a non-perturbative QCD model of a photon–odderon fusion cross section above 200 nb.

A measurement of the t dependence of the helicity structure of diffractive ρ meson electroproduction at HERA
The helicity structure of the diffractive electroproduction of ρ mesons, e+p→e+ρ+Y, is studied in a previously unexplored region of large four-momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, t: 0<t′<3 GeV2, where t′=|t|−|t|min. The data used are collected with the H1 detector at HERA in the kinematic domain 2.5<Q2<60 GeV2, 40<W<120 GeV. No t dependence of the r0400 spin density matrix element is found. A significant t dependent helicity non-conservation from the virtual photon to the ρ meson is observed for the spin density matrix element combinations r500+2r511 and r100+2r111. These t dependences are consistently described by a perturbative QCD model based on the exchange of two gluons.

Measurement of prompt photon cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Results are presented on the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons, inclusively and associated with jets, in the γp center of mass energy range 142 < W < 266 GeV.The cross sections are measured for the transverse momentum range of the photons 5 < E γ T < 10 GeV and for associated jets with E jet T > 4.5 GeV.They are measured differentially as a function of E γ T , E jet T , the pseudorapidities η γ and η jet and estimators of the momentum fractions x γ and x p of the incident photon and proton carried by the constituents participating in the hard process.In order to further investigate the underlying dynamics, the angular correlation between the prompt photon and the jet in the transverse plane is studied.Predictions by perturbative QCD calculations in next to leading order are about 30% below the inclusive prompt photon data after corrections for hadronisation and multiple interactions, but are in reasonable agreement with the results for prompt photons associated with jets.Comparisons with the predictions of the event generators PYTHIA and HERWIG are also presented.

Photoproduction of dijets with high transverse momenta at HERA
Differential dijet cross sections are measured in photoproduction in the region of photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider using an integrated luminosity of 66.6 pb^{-1}. Jets are defined with the inclusive k_T algorithm and a minimum transverse momentum of the leading jet of 25 GeV is required. Dijet cross sections are measured in direct and resolved photon enhanced regions separately. Longitudinal proton momentum fractions up to 0.7 are reached. The data compare well with predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading order QCD and parton showers and with next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for hadronisation effects.
