Measurement of total and partial photon proton cross sections at 180 GeV center of mass energy

Search for new physics in the multijet and missing transverse momentum final state in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 8 TeV
A search for new physics is performed in multijet events with large missing transverse momentum produced in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 8 TeV using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 fb−1 collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample is divided into three jet multiplicity categories (3-5, 6-7, and ≥8 jets), and studied further in bins of two variables: the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta and the missing transverse momentum. The observed numbers of events in various categories are consistent with backgrounds expected from standard model processes. Exclusion limits are presented for several simplified supersymmetric models of squark or gluino pair production.

Search for a charged Higgs boson in pp collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV
A search for a charged Higgs boson is performed with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 +/- 0.5 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV. The charged Higgs boson is searched for in top quark decays for m(H+/-) < m(t) - m(b), and in the direct production pp -> t (b) H+/- for m(H+/-) > m(t) - m(b). The H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] and H+/- -> t b decay modes in the final states tau[h]+jets, mu tau[h], l+jets, and ll' (l = e, mu) are considered in the search. No signal is observed and 95% confidence level upper limits are set on the charged Higgs boson production. A model-independent upper limit on the product branching fraction B( t -> H+/- b ) B( H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] )= 1.2-0.15% is obtained in the mass range m(H+/-) = 80-160 GeV, while the upper limit on the cross section times branching fraction sigma( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) B( H+/- -> tau+/- nu[tau] ) = 0.38-0.025 pb is set in the mass range m(H+/-) = 180-600 GeV. Here, cross section sigma( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) stands for the sum sigma( pp -> t-bar (b) H+ ) + sigma( pp -> t (b-bar) H- ). Assuming B( H+/- -> t b ) = 1, an upper limit on sigma ( pp -> t (b) H+/- ) of 2.0-0.13 pb is set for m(H+/-) = 180-600 GeV. The combination of all considered decay modes and final states is used to set exclusion limits in the m(H+/-)-tan(beta) parameter space in different MSSM benchmark scenarios.

Design and performance of the ABCD3TA ASIC for readout of silicon strip detectors in the ATLAS semiconductor tracker
The ABCD3TA is a 128-channel ASIC with binary architecture for the readout of silicon strip particle detectors in the Semiconductor Tracker of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The chip comprises fast front-end and amplitude discriminator circuits using bipolar devices, a binary pipeline for first level trigger latency, a second level derandomising buffer and data compression circuitry based on CMOS devices. It has been designed and fabricated in a BiCMOS radiation resistant process. Extensive testing of the ABCD3TA chips assembled into detector modules show that the design meets the specifications and maintains the required performance after irradiation up to a total ionising dose of 10 Mrad and a 1-MeV neutron equivalent fluence of 2×1014 n/cm2, corresponding to 10 years of operation of the LHC at its design luminosity. Wafer screening and quality assurance procedures have been developed and implemented in large volume production to ensure that the chips assembled into modules meet the rigorous acceptance criteria.

The barrel modules of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker
This paper describes the silicon microstrip modules in the barrel section of the SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The module requirements, components and assembly techniques are given, as well as first results of the module performance on the fully assembled barrels that make up the detector being installed in the ATLAS experiment.

Measurement of the proton structure functionF 2 from the 1993 HERA data
The ZEUS detector has been used to measure the proton structure functionF 2. During 1993 HERA collided 26.7 GeV electrons on 820 GeV protons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.54 pb−1, representing a twenty fold increase in statistics compared to that of 1992. Results are presented for 7<Q 2<104 GeV2 andx values as low as 3×10−4. The rapid rise inF 2 asx decreases observed previously is now studied in greater detail and persists forQ 2 values up to 500 GeV2.

Search for chargino and neutralino productionat $\sqrt{s} = 192$ -209 GeV at LEP
.Approximately 438 pb-1 of e + e- data from the OPAL detector, taken with the LEP collider running at centre-of-mass energies of 192-209 GeV, are analyzed to search for evidence of chargino pair production, \({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^ + _1\tilde\chi^-_1\), or neutralino associated production, \({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^0_2\tilde\chi^0_1\). Limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross-section for the process \({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^ + _1\tilde\chi^-_1\) and its branching ratios to topologies containing jets and missing energy, or jets with a lepton and missing energy, and on the product of the cross-section for \({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^0_2\tilde\chi^0_1\) and its branching ratio to jets. R-parity conservation is assumed throughout this paper. When these results are interpreted in the context of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, limits are also set on the masses of the \(\tilde\chi^{\pm}_1, \tilde\chi^0_1\) and \(\tilde\chi^0_2\), and regions of the parameter space of the model are ruled out. Nearly model-independent limits are also set at the 95% confidence level on \(\sigma({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^ + _1\tilde\chi^-_1)\) with the assumption that each chargino decays via a W boson, and on \(\sigma({\mathrm{e}}^ + {\mathrm{e}}^-\to\tilde\chi^0_2\tilde\chi^0_1)\) with the \(\tilde\chi^0_2\) assumed to decay via a Z0.

D production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements of D^{*\pm} production in deep inelastic scattering from collisions between 27.5 GeV positrons and 820 GeV protons. The data have been taken with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The decay channel $D^{*+}\to (D^0 \to K^- \pi^+) \pi^+ $ (+ c.c.) has been used in the study. The $e^+p$ cross section for inclusive D^{*\pm} production with $5<Q^2<100 GeV^2$ and $y<0.7$ is 5.3 \pms 1.0 \pms 0.8 nb in the kinematic region {$1.3<p_T(D^{*\pm})<9.0$ GeV and $| \eta(D^{*\pm}) |<1.5$}. Differential cross sections as functions of p_T(D^{*\pm}), $\eta(D^{*\pm}), W$ and $Q^2$ are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations based on the photon-gluon fusion production mechanism. After an extrapolation of the cross section to the full kinematic region in p_T(D^{*\pm}) and $\eta$(D^{*\pm}), the charm contribution $F_2^{c\bar{c}}(x,Q^2)$ to the proton structure function is determined for Bjorken $x$ between 2 $\cdot$ 10$^{-4}$ and 5 $\cdot$ 10$^{-3}$.

Inclusive analysis of the b quark fragmentation function in Z decays at LEP
A study of b quark hadronisation is presented using inclusively reconstructed B hadrons in about four million hadronic Z decays recorded in 1992-2000 with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data are compared to different theoretical models, and fragmentation function parameters of these models are fitted. The average scaled energy of weakly decaying B hadrons is determined to be <xe>=0.7193+-0.0016(stat)+0.0036-0.0031(syst)

The ATLAS semiconductor tracker end-cap module
The challenges for the tracking detector systems at the LHC are unprecedented in terms of the number of channels, the required read-out speed and the expected radiation levels. The ATLAS Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) end-caps have a total of about 3 million electronics channels each reading out every 25 ns into its own on-chip 3.3μs buffer. The highest anticipated dose after 10 years operation is 1.4×1014cm-2 in units of 1 MeV neutron equivalent (assuming the damage factors scale with the non-ionising energy loss). The forward tracker has 1976 double-sided modules, mostly of area ∼70cm2, each having 2×768 strips read out by six ASICs per side. The requirement to achieve an average perpendicular radiation length of 1.5% X0, while coping with up to 7 W dissipation per module (after irradiation), leads to stringent constraints on the thermal design. The additional requirement of 1500e- equivalent noise charge (ENC) rising to only 1800e- ENC after irradiation, provides stringent design constraints on both the high-density Cu/Polyimide flex read-out circuit and the ABCD3TA read-out ASICs. Finally, the accuracy of module assembly must not compromise the 16μm(rφ) resolution perpendicular to the strip directions or 580μm radial resolution coming from the 40 mrad front-back stereo angle. A total of 2210 modules were built to the tight tolerances and specifications required for the SCT. This was 234 more than the 1976 required and represents a yield of 93%. The component flow was at times tight, but the module production rate of 40–50 per week was maintained despite this. The distributed production was not found to be a major logistical problem and it allowed additional flexibility to take advantage of where the effort was available, including any spare capacity, for building the end-cap modules. The collaboration that produced the ATLAS SCT end-cap modules kept in close contact at all times so that the effects of shortages or stoppages at different sites could be rapidly resolved.

The silicon microstrip sensors of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker
This paper describes the AC-coupled, single-sided, p-in-n silicon microstrip sensors used in the Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The sensor requirements, specifications and designs are discussed, together with the qualification and quality assurance procedures adopted for their production. The measured sensor performance is presented, both initially and after irradiation to the fluence anticipated after 10 years of LHC operation. The sensors are now successfully assembled within the detecting modules of the SCT, and the SCT tracker is completed and integrated within the ATLAS Inner Detector. Hamamatsu Photonics Ltd. supplied 92.2% of the 15,392 installed sensors, with the remainder supplied by CiS.

Photonic events with missing energy in $\mathrme^+\mathrme^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 189 GeV
Photonic events with large missing energy have been observed in $\rm e^+e^-$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV using the OPAL detector at LEP. Results are presented for event topologies consistent with a single photon or with an acoplanar photon pair. Cross-section measurements are performed within the kinematic acceptance of each selection, and the number of light neutrino species is measured. Cross-section results are compared with the expectations from the Standard Model process $\mathrme^+\mathrme^-\to \nu\overline{\nu}$ + photon(s). No evidence is observed for new physics contributions to these final states. Upper limits on $\sigma(\mathrme^+\mathrme^-\to\mathrm{X}\mathrm{Y})\cdot\mathrm{BR}(\mathrm{X}\to\mathrm{Y}\gamma)$ and $\sigma(\mathrme^+\mathrme^-\to\mathrm{XX})\cdot\mathrm{BR}^2(\mathrm{X}\to\mathrm{Y}\gamma)$ are derived for the case of stable and invisible $\mathrm{Y}$ . These limits apply to single and pair production of excited neutrinos ( $\mathrm{X} = \nu^*, \mathrm{Y} = \nu$ ), to neutralino production ( $\mathrm{X}={{{\tilde{\chi}}^{0}}_{2}}, \mathrm{Y}={{{\tilde{\chi}}^{0}}_{1}}$ ) and to supersymmetric models in which $\mathrm{X} ={{{\tilde{\chi}}^{0}}_{1}}$ and $\mathrm{Y}={\tilde{\mathrm{G}}}$ is a light gravitino. The case of macroscopic decay lengths of particle X is considered for $\mathrme^+\mathrme^- \to \mathrm{XX}$ , $\rm X \to Y \gamma$ , when $M_{\mathrm Y}\approx 0$ . The single-photon results are also used to place upper limits on superlight gravitino pair production as well as graviton-photon production in the context of theories with additional space dimensions.

Observation of direct processes in photoproduction at HERA
Jets in photoproduction events have been studied with the ZEUS detector for yp centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130 to 250 GeV.The inclusive jet distributions give evidence for the dominance of resolved photon interactions.In the di-jet sample the direct processes are for the first time clearly isolated.Di-jet cross sections for the resolved and direct processes are given in a restricted kinematic range.

Measurements of the top quark-antiquark ($t\overline{t}$) spin correlations and the top quark polarization are presented for $t\overline{t}$ pairs produced in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of $19.5\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and two or more jets, where at least one of the jets is identified as originating from a bottom quark. The spin correlations and polarization are measured from the angular distributions of the two selected leptons, both inclusively and differentially, with respect to the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the $t\overline{t}$ system. The measurements are unfolded to the parton level and found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model. A search for new physics in the form of anomalous top quark chromo moments is performed. No evidence of new physics is observed, and exclusion limits on the real part of the chromo-magnetic dipole moment and the imaginary part of the chromo-electric dipole moment are evaluated.

Correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb and pp collisions at s N N = 2.76 $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76 $$ TeV
The quark-gluon plasma is studied via medium-induced changes to correlations between jets and charged particles in PbPb collisions compared to pp reference data. This analysis uses data sets from PbPb and pp collisions with integrated luminosities of 166 μb−1 and 5.3 pb−1, respectively, collected at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=2.76 $$ TeV. The angular distributions of charged particles are studied as a function of relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and relative azimuthal angle (Δϕ) with respect to reconstructed jet directions. Charged particles are correlated with all jets with transverse momentum (p T) above 120 GeV, and with the leading and subleading jets (the highest and second-highest in p T, respectively) in a selection of back-to-back dijet events. Modifications in PbPb data relative to pp reference data are characterized as a function of PbPb collision centrality and charged particle p T. A centrality-dependent excess of low-p T particles is present for all jets studied, and is most pronounced in the most central events. This excess of low-p T particles follows a Gaussian-like distribution around the jet axis, and extends to large relative angles of Δη ≈ 1 and Δϕ ≈ 1.

Exclusive ϱ0 production in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA
The exclusive production of $\rho^0$ mesons in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering has been studied using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections have been measured in the range $7 < Q^2 < 25$ GeV$^2$ for $\gamma^*p$ centre of mass (c.m.) energies from 40 to 130 GeV. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section exhibits a $Q^{-(4.2 \pm 0.8 ^{+1.4}_{-0.5})}$ dependence and both longitudinally and transversely polarised $\rho^0$'s are observed. The $\gamma^*p \to \rho^0 p$ cross section rises strongly with increasing c.m. energy, when compared with NMC data at lower energy, which cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange. The data are compared with perturbative QCD calculations where the rise in the cross section reflects the increase in the gluon density at low $x$. the gluon density at low $x$.

Dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Dijet production by almost real photons has been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector. Jets have been identified using the cone algorithm. A cut on xγOBS, the fraction of the photon energy participating in the production of the two jets of highest transverse energy, is used to define cross sections sensitive to the parton distributions in the proton and in the photon. The dependence of the dijet cross sections on pseudorapidity has been measured for xγOBS ⩾ 0.75 and xγOBS < 0.75. The former is sensitive to the gluon momentum density in the proton. The latter is sensitive to the ginon in the photon. The cross sections are corrected for detector acceptance and compared to leading order QCD calculations.

Multi-photon production in ee collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 181-209 GeV
The process $\mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{e}^- \to\gamma\gamma(\gamma)$ is studied using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP between the years 1997 and 2000. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 672.3 pb-1 at centre-of-mass energies lying between 181 GeV and 209 GeV. Total and differential cross-sections are determined and found to be in good agreement with the predictions of QED. Fits to the observed angular distributions are used to set limits on parameters from several models of physics beyond the Standard Model such as cut-off parameters, contact interactions of the type $\mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{e}^- \gamma\gamma$ , gravity in extra spatial dimensions and excited electrons. In events with three photons in the final state the mass spectrum of photon pairs is investigated. No narrow resonance $X\to\gamma\gamma$ is found and limits are placed on the product of the $\rm X \gamma$ production cross-section and branching ratio.

Search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e+e− collisions at ≈192–209 GeV
A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson has been performed with the OPAL detector at LEP based on the full data sample collected at s≈192–209 GeV in 1999 and 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 426 pb−1. The data are examined for their consistency with the background-only hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses. A lower bound of 109.7 GeV is obtained on the Higgs boson mass at the 95% confidence level. At higher masses, the data are consistent with both the background and the signal-plus-background hypotheses.

Search for single top quark production at LEP2
A search for single top quark production via flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC) was performed with data collected by the OPAL detector at the e+e− collider LEP. Approximately 600 pb−1 of data collected at s=189–209 GeV were used to search for the FCNC process e+e−→tc(u)→bWc(u). This analysis is sensitive to the leptonic and the hadronic decay modes of the W boson. No evidence for a FCNC process is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the single top production cross-section as a function of the centre-of-mass energy are derived. Limits on the anomalous coupling parameters κγ and κZ are determined from these results.

Search for stable and long-lived massive charged particles in e+e− collisions at =130209 GeV
A search for stable and long-lived massive particles of electric charge |Q/e|=1 or fractional charges of 2/3, 4/3, and 5/3 is reported using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP, at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 209 GeV. These particles are assumed to be pair-produced in e+e− collisions and not to interact strongly. No evidence for the production of these particles was observed. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross-section between 0.005 and 0.028 pb have been derived for scalar and spin-1/2 particles with charge ±1. Within the framework of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (CMSSM), this implies a lower limit of 98.0 (98.5) GeV on the mass of long-lived right- (left-)handed scalar muons and scalar taus. Long-lived charged heavy leptons and charginos are excluded for masses below 102.0 GeV. For particles with fractional charge ±2/3, ±4/3 and ±5/3, the upper limit on the production cross-section varies between 0.005 and 0.020 pb. All mass and cross-section limits are derived at the 95% confidence level and are valid for particles with lifetimes longer than 10−6 s.

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons with the OPAL detector at LEP
A search for pair-produced doubly charged Higgs bosons has been performed using data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 614 pb−1 collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV. No evidence for a signal has been observed. A mass limit of 98.5 GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level has been set for the doubly charged Higgs particle in left–right symmetric models. This is the first search for doubly charged Higgs bosons at centre-of-mass energies larger than 91 GeV.

Search for a massive resonance decaying into a Higgs boson and a W or Z boson in hadronic final states in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV
A search for a massive resonance decaying into a standard-model-like Higgs boson (H) and a W or Z boson is reported. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1, collected in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. Signal events, in which the decay products of Higgs, W, or Z bosons at high Lorentz boost are contained within single reconstructed jets, are identified using jet substructure techniques, including the tagging of b hadrons. This is the first search for heavy resonances decaying into HW or HZ resulting in an all-jet final state, as well as the first application of jet substructure techniques to identify H → WW* → 4q decays at high Lorentz boost. No significant signal is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross sections of W′ and Z′ in a model with mass-degenerate charged and neutral spin-1 resonances. Resonance masses are excluded for W′ in the interval [1.0, 1.6] TeV, for Z′ in the intervals [1.0, 1.1] and [1.3, 1.5] TeV, and for mass-degenerate W′ and Z′ in the interval [1.0, 1.7] TeV.

Azimuthal decorrelation of jets widely separated in rapidity in pp collisions at s = 7 $$ \sqrt{s}=7 $$ TeV
The decorrelation in the azimuthal angle between the most forward and the most backward jets (Mueller-Navelet jets) is measured in data collected in pp collisions with the CMS detector at the LHC at $$ \sqrt{s}=7 $$ TeV. The measurement is presented in the form of distributions of azimuthal-angle differences, Δϕ, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, the average cosines of (π − Δϕ), 2(π − Δϕ), and 3(π − Δϕ), and ratios of these cosines. The jets are required to have transverse momenta, p T, in excess of 35 GeV and rapidities, |y|, of less than 4.7. The results are presented as a function of the rapidity separation, Δy, between the Mueller-Navelet jets, reaching Δy up to 9.4 for the first time. The results are compared to predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators and to analytical predictions based on the DGLAP and BFKL parton evolution schemes.

Search for third-generation scalar leptoquarks in the tτ channel in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV
A search for pair production of third-generation scalar leptoquarks decaying to top quark and tau lepton pairs is presented using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 8 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 inverse femtobarns. The search is performed using events that contain an electron or a muon, a hadronically decaying tau lepton, and two or more jets. The observations are found to be consistent with the standard model predictions. Assuming that all leptoquarks decay to a top quark and a tau lepton, the existence of pair produced, charge -1/3, third-generation leptoquarks up to a mass of 685 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level. This result constitutes the first direct limit for leptoquarks decaying into a top quark and a tau lepton, and may also be applied directly to the pair production of bottom squarks decaying predominantly via the R-parity violating coupling lambda'[333].

An upper limit on the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton
Using radiative Z0→ τ+τ−γevents collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at s=MZ during 1990–95, a direct study of the electromagnetic current at the τγ vertex has been performed in terms of the anomalous magnetic form factor F2 of the τ lepton. The analysis is based on a data sample of 1429 e+e−→τ+τ−γevents which are examined for a deviation from the expectation with F2=0. From the non-observation of anomalous τ+τ−γproduction a limit of−0.068<F2<0.065is obtained. This can also be interpreted as a limit on the electric dipole form factor F3 as|eF3|<3.7×10−16ecm.The above ranges are valid at the 95% confidence level.

Search for a very light NMSSM Higgs boson produced in decays of the 125 GeV scalar boson and decaying into τ leptons in pp collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV
A search for a very light Higgs boson decaying into a pair of τ leptons is presented within the framework of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. This search is based on a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The signal is defined by the production of either of the two lightest scalars, h1 or h2, via gluon-gluon fusion and subsequent decay into a pair of the lightest Higgs bosons, a1 or h1. The h1 or h2 boson is identified with the observed state at a mass of 125 GeV. The analysis searches for decays of the a1 (h1) states into pairs of τ leptons and covers a mass range for the a1 (h1) boson of 4 to 8 GeV. The search reveals no significant excess in data above standard model background expectations, and an upper limit is set on the signal production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the a1 (h1) boson mass. The 95% confidence level limit ranges from 4.5 pb at $$ {m}_{{\mathrm{a}}_1} $$ $$ \left({m}_{{\mathrm{h}}_1}\right)=8 $$ GeV to 10.3 pb at $$ {m}_{{\mathrm{a}}_1} $$ $$ \left({m}_{{\mathrm{h}}_1}\right)=5 $$ GeV.

Beam tests of ATLAS SCT silicon strip detector modules
The design and technology of the silicon strip detector modules for the Semiconductor Tracker (SCT) of the ATLAS experiment have been finalised in the last several years. Integral to this process has been the measurement and verification of the tracking performance of the different module types in test beams at the CERN SPS and the KEK PS. Tests have been performed to explore the module performance under various operating conditions including detector bias voltage, magnetic field, incidence angle, and state of irradiation up to 3×1014 protons per square centimetre. A particular emphasis has been the understanding of the operational consequences of the binary readout scheme.

Search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons and constraints on their couplings from Bhabha scattering
A search for the single production of doubly-charged Higgs bosons is performed using e+e− collision data collected by the OPAL experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV. No evidence for the existence of H±± is observed. Upper limits are derived on hee, the Yukawa coupling of the H±± to like-signed electron pairs. A 95% confidence level upper limit of hee< 0.071 is inferred for M(H±±)<160 GeV assuming that the sum of the branching fractions of the H±± to all lepton flavour combinations is 100%. Additionally, indirect constraints on hee from Bhabha scattering at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV, where the H±± would contribute via t-channel exchange, are derived for M(H±±)<2 TeV. These are the first results both from a single production search and on constraints from Bhabha scattering reported from LEP.

Search for scalar top and scalar bottom quarks at LEP
Searches for a scalar top quark and a scalar bottom quark have been performed using a data sample of 438 pb−1 at centre-of-mass energies of s=192–209 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. No evidence for a signal was found. The 95% confidence level lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 97.6 GeV if the mixing angle between the supersymmetric partners of the left- and right-handed states of the top quark is zero. When the scalar top quark decouples from the Z0 boson, the lower limit is 95.7 GeV. These limits were obtained assuming that the scalar top quark decays into a charm quark and the lightest neutralino, and that the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV. The complementary decay mode of the scalar top quark decaying into a bottom quark, a charged lepton and a scalar neutrino has also been studied. The lower limit on the scalar top quark mass is 96.0 GeV for this decay mode, if the mass difference between the scalar top quark and the scalar neutrino is greater than 10 GeV and if the mixing angle of the scalar top quark is zero. From a search for the scalar bottom quark, a mass limit of 96.9 GeV was obtained if the mass difference between the scalar bottom quark and the lightest neutralino is larger than 10 GeV.

Anomalous quartic couplings between the electroweak gauge bosons may contribute to the $\ensuremath{\nu}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $q\overline{q}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ final states produced in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collisions. This analysis uses the LEP2 OPAL data sample at center-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. Event selections identify $\ensuremath{\nu}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $q\overline{q}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ events in which the two photons are reconstructed within the detector acceptance. The cross section for the process ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}q\overline{q}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ is measured. Averaging over all energies, the ratio of the observed ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}q\overline{q}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ cross section to the standard model expectation is $\mathrm{R}(\mathrm{data}/\mathrm{SM})=0.92\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.07\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04,$ where the errors represent the statistical and systematic uncertainties respectively. The $\ensuremath{\nu}\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $q\overline{q}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ data are used to constrain possible anomalous ${W}^{+}{W}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{ZZ}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ couplings. Combining with previous OPAL results from the ${W}^{+}{W}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ final state, the 95% confidence level limits on the anomalous coupling parameters ${a}_{0}^{\mathrm{Z}},$ ${a}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{Z}},$ ${a}_{0}^{\mathrm{W}}$ and ${a}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{W}}$ are found to be $\ensuremath{-}0.007 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}&lt;{a}_{0}^{\mathrm{Z}}/{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{2}&lt;0.023 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2},$ $\ensuremath{-}0.029 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}&lt;{a}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{Z}}/{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{2}&lt;0.029 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2},$ $\ensuremath{-}0.020 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}&lt;{a}_{0}^{\mathrm{W}}/{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{2}&lt;0.020 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2},$ $\ensuremath{-}0.052 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}&lt;{a}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{W}}/{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{2}&lt;0.037 {\mathrm{GeV}}^{\ensuremath{-}2},$ where $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ is the energy scale of the new physics. Limits found when allowing two or more parameters to vary are also presented.

The silicon sensors for the Compact Muon Solenoid tracker—design and qualification procedure
The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at CERN. Its inner tracking system consist of the world largest Silicon Strip Tracker (SST). In total it implements 24,244 silicon sensors covering an area of 206m2. To construct a large system of this size and ensure its functionality for the full lifetime of 10 years under LHC condition, the CMS collaboration developed an elaborate design and a detailed quality assurance program. This paper describes the strategy and shows first results on sensor qualification.

Search for standard model production of four top quarks in the lepton + jets channel in pp collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV
A search is presented for standard model (SM) production of four top quarks $$ \left(t\overline{t}t\overline{t}\right) $$ in pp collisions in the lepton + jets channel. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.6 fb−1 recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The expected cross section for SM $$ t\overline{t}t\overline{t} $$ production is $$ {\sigma}_{t\overline{t}t\overline{t}}^{\mathrm{SM}}\approx 1\;\mathrm{f}\mathrm{b} $$ . A combination of kinematic reconstruction and multivariate techniques is used to distinguish between the small signal and large background. The data are consistent with expectations of the SM, and an upper limit of 32 fb is set at a 95% confidence level on the cross section for producing four top quarks in the SM, where a limit of 32 ± 17 fb is expected.

A measurement of the τ mass and the first CPT test with τ leptons
We measure the mass of the τ to be 1775.1±1.6(mcnstat.)±1.0(mcnsys.) MeV using τ from Z0 decays. To test CPT invariance we compare the masses of the positively and negatively charged τ. The relative mass difference is found to be smaller than 3.0×10−3 at the 90% confidence level.

Measurement of |Vcb| using decays
The magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element Vcb has been measured using B̄0→D∗+ℓ−ν̄ decays recorded on the Z0 peak using the OPAL detector at LEP. The D∗+→D0π+ decays were reconstructed both in the particular decay modes D0→K−π+ and D0→K−π+π0 and via an inclusive technique. The product of |Vcb| and the decay form factor of the B̄0→D∗+ℓ−ν̄ transition at zero recoil F(1) was measured to be F(1)|Vcb|=(37.1±1.0±2.0)×10−3, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic respectively. By using Heavy Quark Effective Theory calculations for F(1), a value of|Vcb|=(40.7±1.1±2.2±1.6)×10−3was obtained, where the third error is due to theoretical uncertainties in the value of F(1). The branching ratio Br(B̄0→D∗+ℓ−ν̄) was also measured to be (5.26±0.20±0.46)%.

Study of D∗ (2010)± production in ep collisions at HERA
We report the first observation of charmed mesons with the ZEUS detector at HERA using the decay channel ${\rm D}^{*+}\rightarrow (\Do \rightarrow {\rm K}^-\pi^+)\pi^+$ (+ c.c.). Clear signals in the mass difference $\Delta M$=$M$(D$^*$)--$M$(D$^0)$ as well as in the $M(K\pi)$ distribution at the D$^0$ mass are found. The $ep$ cross section for inclusive \DSpm\ production with $Q^2<4~\GeV^2$ in the $\gamma p$ centre-of-mass energy range $115 < W < 275$ \GeV\ has been determined to be $(32 \pm 7^{+4}_{-7} )$ nb in the kinematic region \mbox{\{$p_T(\DS)\geq $ 1.7 \,\GeV, $|\eta(\DS)| < 1.5 $\}}. Ex\-tra\-po\-la\-ting outside this region, assuming a mass of the charm quark of 1.5 \GeV, we estimate the $ep$ charm cross section to be $\sigma(e p \rightarrow c \bar{c}X ) = (0.45 \pm 0.11^{+0.37}_{-0.22}) \, \mu {\rm b} $ at \mbox{$\sqrt{s} = 296$}~\GeV\ and $\langle W \rangle = 198$ \GeV. The average $\gamma p$ charm cross section \mbox{$\sigma(\gamma p \rightarrow c \bar{c}X )$} is found to be \mbox{$(6.3 \pm 2.2^{+6.3}_{-3.0}) \, \mu {\rm b} $} at $\langle W \rangle = 163$ \GeV\ and \mbox{$(16.9 \pm 5.2^{+13.9}_{-8.5}) \, \mu {\rm b} $} at $\langle W \rangle = 243$ \GeV. The increase of the total charm photoproduction cross section by one order of magnitude with respect to low energy data experiments is well described by QCD NLO calculations using singular gluon distributions in the proton.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons in ${\mathrm{e}}^+ {\mathrm{e}}^-$ collisions at $\sqrt s \approx$ 189 GeV
Searches for the neutral Higgs bosons predicted by the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM) have been performed with the OPAL detector at LEP. Approximately 170 pb $^{-1}$ of $\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ collision data collected at $\sqrt{s} \approx 189$ GeV were used to search for Higgs boson production in the SM process ${\mathrm{e}}^+{\mathrm{e}}^- \rightarrow \mathrm{H}^{0}\mathrm{Z}^{0}$ and the MSSM processes ${\mathrm{e}}^+{\mathrm{e}}^- \rightarrow \mathrm{h}^{0} \mathrm{Z}^{0}$ and ${\mathrm{e}}^+ {\mathrm{e}}^- \rightarrow \mathrm{A}^{0} \mathrm{h}^{0}$ . The searches are sensitive to the $\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$ and $\tau^+\tau^-$ decay modes of the Higgs bosons, and also to the MSSM decay mode $\mathrm{h}^{0} \rightarrow \mathrm{A}^{0} \mathrm{A}^{0}$ . OPAL search results at lower centre-of-mass energies have been incorporated in the limits, which are valid at the 95% confidence level. For the SM Higgs boson, a lower mass bound of 91.0 GeV is obtained. In the MSSM, the limits are $m_{\mathrm{H}} >74.8$ GeV and $m_{\mathrm{A}} >76.5$ GeV, assuming $\tan\beta > 1$ , that the mixing of the scalar top quarks is either zero or maximal, and that the soft SUSY-breaking masses are 1 TeV. For the case of zero scalar top mixing, the values of $\tan\beta$ between 0.72 and 2.19 are excluded.

W+W− production cross section and W branching fractions in e+e− collisions at 189 GeV
From a data sample of 183 pb−1 recorded at a center-of-mass energy of s=189 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP, 3068 W-pair candidate events are selected. Assuming Standard Model W boson decay branching fractions, the W-pair production cross section is measured to be σWW=16.30±0.34(stat.)±0.18(syst.) pb. When combined with previous OPAL measurements, the W boson branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be 68.32±0.61(stat.)±0.28(syst.)% assuming lepton universality. These results are consistent with Standard Model expectations.

Search for supersymmetry in pp collisions at s = 13 $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV in the single-lepton final state using the sum of masses of large-radius jets
Results are reported from a search for supersymmetric particles in proton-proton collisions in the final state with a single, high transverse momentum lepton; multiple jets, including at least one b-tagged jet; and large missing transverse momentum. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb−1 at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search focuses on processes leading to high jet multiplicities, such as gluino pair production with $$ \tilde{\mathrm{g}}\to \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}{\tilde{\chi}}_1^0 $$ . The quantity M J , defined as the sum of the masses of the large-radius jets in the event, is used in conjunction with other kinematic variables to provide discrimination between signal and background and as a key part of the background estimation method. The observed event yields in the signal regions in data are consistent with those expected for standard model backgrounds, estimated from control regions in data. Exclusion limits are obtained for a simplified model corresponding to gluino pair production with three-body decays into top quarks and neutralinos. Gluinos with a mass below 1600 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level for scenarios with low $$ {\tilde{\chi}}_1^0 $$ mass, and neutralinos with a mass below 800 GeV are excluded for a gluino mass of about 1300 GeV. For models with two-body gluino decays producing on-shell top squarks, the excluded region is only weakly sensitive to the top squark mass.

Inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic scattering events at HERA
A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelasticep scattering forγ*p centre-of-mass energies 75<W<175 GeV and momentum transfer squared 10<Q 2<160 GeV2 from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in theγ*p centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum,x F, and of the transverse momentum,p* t and 〈p* t 2〉, as a function ofx F, W andQ 2 are given. Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections. The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the sameW are observed. The value of 〈p* t 2〉 for LRG events with a hadronic massM x, which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the 〈p* t 2〉 value observed in fixed target experiments atW≈M x.

Observation of events with an energetic forward neutron in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken x and Q2 in the range 3 · 10−4 < xBJ < 6 · 10−3 and 10 < Q2 < 100 GeV2.

Measurements of the Bs0 and Λb0 lifetimes
This paper presents updated measurements of the lifetimes of the Bs0 meson and the Λb0 baryon using 4.4 million hadronic Z0 decays recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP from 1990 to 1995. A sample of Bs0 decays is obtained using Ds−ℓ+ combinations, where the Ds− is fully reconstructed in the φπ−, K∗0K− and K−K0S decay channels and partially reconstructed in the φℓ−ν̄X decay mode. A sample of Λb0 decays is obtained using Λc+ℓ− combinations, where the Λc+ is fully reconstructed in its decay to a pK−π+ final state and partially reconstructed in the Λℓ+νX decay channel. From 172±28 Ds−ℓ+ combinations attributed to Bs0 decays, the measured lifetime is τ(Bs0)=1.50+0.16−0.15±0.04ps, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. From the 129±25 Λc+ℓ− combinations attributed to Λb0 decays, the measured lifetime is τ(Λb0)=1.29+0.24−0.22±0.06ps, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.

Inclusive jet differential cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction ep → jet + X at Q2 below 4 GeV2 have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.55 pb−1. These cross sections are given in the kinematic region 0.2 < y < 0.85, for jet pseudorapidities in the ep-laboratory range −1 < ηjet < 2 and refer to jets at the hadron level with a cone radius of one unit in the η - θ plane. These results correspond to quasi-real photoproduction at centre-of-mass energies in the range 130–270 GeV and, approximately, for jet pseudorapidities in the interval −3 < ηjet(λp CMS) < 0. These measurements cover a new kinematic regime of the partonic structure of the photon, at typical scales up to ∼300 GeV2 and photon fractional momenta down to xγ ∼ 10−2. Leading logarithm parton shower Monte Carlo calculations, which include both resolved and direct processes and use the predictions of currently available parametrisations of the photon parton distributions, describe in general the shape and magnitude of the measured ηjet and Etjet distributions.

Search for the Bc meson in hadronic Z0 decays
A search for decays of the Bc meson was performed using data collected from 1990–1995 with the OPAL detector on or near the Z0 peak at LEP. The decay channels Bc+→J/ψπ+, Bc+→J/ψa1+ and Bc+→J/ψℓ+ν were investigated, where ℓ denotes an electron or a muon. Two candidates are observed in the mode Bc+→J/ψπ+, with an estimated background of (0.63±0.20) events. The weighted mean of the masses of the two candidates is (6.32±0.06) GeV/c2, which is consistent with the predicted mass of the Bc meson. One candidate event is observed in the mode Bc+→J/ψℓ+ν, with an estimated background of (0.82±0.19) events. No candidate events are observed in the Bc+→J/ψa1+ decay mode, with an estimated background of (1.10±0.22) events. Upper bounds at the 90% confidence level are set on the production rates for these processes.

Search for nearly mass-degenerate charginos and neutralinos at LEP
A search was performed for charginos with masses close to the mass of the lightest neutralino in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 189-209 GeV recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. Events were selected if they had an observed high-energy photon from initial state radiation, reducing the dominant background from two-photon scattering to a negligible level. No significant excess over Standard Model expectations has been observed in the analysed data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 570pb-1. Upper limits were derived on the chargino pair-productin cross-section, and lower limits on the chargino mass were derived in the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model for the gravity and anomaly mediated Supersymmetry breaking scenarios.

Test of non-commutative QED in the process e+e−→γγ at LEP
Non-commutative QED would lead to deviations from the Standard Model depending on a new energy scale ΛNC and a unique direction in space defined by two angles η and ξ. In this analysis, η is defined as the angle between the unique direction and the rotation axis of the earth. The predictions of a tree level calculation for the process e+e−→γγ are evaluated for the specific orientation of the OPAL detector and compared to the measurements. Distributions of the polar and azimuthal photon angles are used to extract limits on the energy scale ΛNC depending on the model parameter η. It is shown that the time dependence of the total cross-section could be used to determine the model parameter ξ if there were a detectable signal. This is the first experimental study of non-commutative QED at an e+e− collider.

Scaling violations of quark and gluon jet fragmentation functionsin ${\rm e^ + e^-}$ annihilations at $\sqrt s = 91.2$ and 183-209 GeV
Flavour inclusive, udsc and b fragmentation functions in unbiased jets, and flavour inclusive, udsc, b and gluon fragmentation functions in biased jets are measured in e+e- annihilations from data collected at centre-of-mass energies of 91.2, and 183-209 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The unbiased jets are defined by hemispheres of inclusive hadronic events, while the biased jet measurements are based on three-jet events selected with jet algorithms. Several methods are employed to extract the fragmentation functions over a wide range of scales. Possible biases are studied in the results are obtained. The fragmentation functions are compared to results from lower energy e+e- experiments and with earlier LEP measurements and are found to be consistent. Scaling violations are observed and are found to be stronger for the fragmentation functions of gluon jets than for those of quarks. The measured fragmentation functions are compared to three recent theoretical next-to-leading order calculations and to the predictions of three Monte Carlo event generators. While the Monte Carlo models are in good agreement with the data, the theoretical predictions fail to describe the full set of results, in particular the b and gluon jet measurements.

Search for Yukawa Production of a light neutral Higgs Boson at LEP
Within a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) a search for a light Higgs boson in the mass range of 4–12 GeV has been performed in the Yukawa process $\mathrme^+ \mathrme^-\rightarrow \mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{A}/\mathrm{h}\rightarrow\mathrm{b} \bar{\mathrm{b}}\tau^+\tau^-$ , using the data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP between 1992 and 1995 in $\mathrme^+ \mathrme^-$ collisions at about 91 GeV centre-of-mass energy. A likelihood selection is applied to separate background and signal. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the expected background. Within a CP-conserving 2HDM type II model the cross-section for Yukawa production depends on $\xi^{\mathrm{A}}_d=|\tan\beta|$ and $\xi^{\mathrm{h}}_d=|\sin\alpha/\cos\beta|$ for the production of the CP-odd A and the CP-even h, respectively, where $\tan\beta$ is the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs doublets and $\alpha$ is the mixing angle between the neutral CP-even Higgs bosons. From our data 95% C.L. upper limits are derived for $\xi^{\mathrm{A}}_d$ within the range of 8.5 to 13.6 and for $\xi^{\mathrm{h}}_d$ between 8.2 to 13.7, depending on the mass of the Higgs boson, assuming a branching fraction into $\tau^+\tau^-$ of 100%. An interpretation of the limits within a 2HDM type II model with Standard Model particle content is given. These results impose constraints on several models that have been proposed to explain the recent BNL measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment.

Phenomenological MSSM interpretation of CMS searches in pp collisions at s = 7 $$ \sqrt{s}=7 $$ and 8 TeV
Searches for new physics by the CMS collaboration are interpreted in the framework of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM). The data samples used in this study were collected at sqrt(s) = 7 and 8 TeV and have integrated luminosities of 5.0 and 19.5 inverse-femtobarns, respectively. A global Bayesian analysis is performed, incorporating results from a broad range of CMS supersymmetry searches, as well as constraints from other experiments. Because the pMSSM incorporates several well-motivated assumptions that reduce the 120 parameters of the MSSM to just 19 parameters defined at the electroweak scale, it is possible to assess the results of the study in a relatively straightforward way. Approximately half of the model points in a potentially accessible subspace of the pMSSM are excluded, including all pMSSM model points with a gluino mass below 500 GeV, as well as models with a squark mass less than 300 GeV. Models with chargino and neutralino masses below 200 GeV are disfavored, but no mass range of model points can be ruled out based on the analyses considered. The nonexcluded regions in the pMSSM parameter space are characterized in terms of physical processes and key observables, and implications for future searches are discussed.

Measurement of multiplicity and momentum spectra in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame at HERA
Charged particle production has been measured in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events using the ZEUS detector over a large range ofQ 2 from 10 to 1280 GeV2. The evolution withQ of the charged multiplicity and scaled momentum has been investigated in the current fragmentation region of the Breit frame. The data are used to study QCD coherence effects in DIS and are compared with correspondinge + e − data in order to test the universality of quark fragmentation.

Study of the photon remnant in resolved photoproduction at HERA
Photoproduction at HERA is studied in $ep$ collisions, with the ZEUS detector, for $\gamma p$ centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130-270 GeV. A sample of events with two high-$p_T$ jets ($p_T > 6$ GeV, $\eta <1.6$) and a third cluster in the approximate direction of the electron beam is isolated using a clustering algorithm. These events are mostly due to resolved photoproduction. The third cluster is identified as the photon remnant. Its properties, such as the transverse and longitudinal energy flows around the axis of the cluster, are consistent with those commonly attributed to jets, and in particular with those found for the two jets in these events. The mean value of the photon remnant $p_T$ with respect to the beam axis is measured to be $2.1 \pm 0.2$ GeV, which demonstrates substantial mean transverse momenta for the photon remnant.

Investigation of design parameters for radiation hard silicon microstrip detectors
In the context of the development of radiation hard silicon microstrip detectors for the CMS Tracker, we have investigated the dependence of interstrip and backplane capacitance as well as depletion and breakdown voltage on the design parameters and substrate characteristics of the devices. Measurements have been made for strip pitches between 60 and 240μm and various strip implants and metal widths, using multi-geometry devices, fabricated on wafers of either 〈111〉 or 〈100〉 crystal orientation, of resistivities between 1 and 6kΩcm and of thicknesses between 300 and 410μm. The effect of irradiation on properties of devices has been studied with 24GeV/c protons up to a fluence of 4.3×1014cm−2.

Search for pair-produced leptoquarks in e + e- interactions at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 189\text{--}209$ GeV
.A search for pair-produced leptoquarks is performed using \(\mbox{e}^ + \mbox{e}^-\) collision events collected by the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. The data sample corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 596 pb-1. The leptoquarks are assumed to be produced via couplings to the photon and the Z0. For a given search channel only leptoquark decays involving a single lepton generation are considered. No evidence for leptoquark pair production is observed. Lower limits on masses for scalar and vector leptoquarks are calculated. The results improve most of the LEP limits derived from previous searches for the pair production process by 10-25 GeV, depending on the leptoquark quantum numbers.

The integration and engineering of the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker Barrel
The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) was built in three sections: a barrel and two end-caps. This paper describes the design, construction and final integration of the barrel section. The barrel is constructed around four nested cylinders that provide a stable and accurate support structure for the 2112 silicon modules and their associated services. The emphasis of this paper is directed at the aspects of engineering design that turned a concept into a fully-functioning detector, as well as the integration and testing of large sub-sections of the final SCT barrel detector. The paper follows the chronology of the construction. The main steps of the assembly are described with the results of intermediate tests. The barrel service components were developed and fabricated in parallel so that a flow of detector modules, cooling loops, opto-harnesses and Frequency-Scanning-Interferometry (FSI) alignment structures could be assembled onto the four cylinders. Once finished, each cylinder was conveyed to the next site for the mounting of modules to form a complete single barrel. Extensive electrical and thermal function tests were carried out on the completed single barrels. In the next stage, the four single barrels and thermal enclosures were combined into the complete SCT barrel detector so that it could be integrated with the Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) barrel to form the central part of the ATLAS inner detector. Finally, the completed SCT barrel was tested together with the TRT barrel in noise tests and using cosmic rays.

Measurement of jet multiplicity distributions in $$\mathrm {t}\overline{\mathrm {t}}$$ t t ¯ production in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7\,\text {TeV} $$ s = 7 TeV
The normalised differential top quark-antiquark production cross section is measured as a function of the jet multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 $$\,\text {TeV} $$ at the LHC with the CMS detector. The measurement is performed in both the dilepton and lepton+jets decay channels using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 $$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$ . Using a procedure to associate jets to decay products of the top quarks, the differential cross section of the $$\mathrm {t}\overline{\mathrm {t}}$$ production is determined as a function of the additional jet multiplicity in the lepton+jets channel. Furthermore, the fraction of events with no additional jets is measured in the dilepton channel, as a function of the threshold on the jet transverse momentum. The measurements are compared with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics and no significant deviations are observed.

Measurement of the W+W−γ cross-section and first direct limits on anomalous electroweak quartic gauge couplings
A study of W+W− events accompanied by hard photon radiation produced in e+e− collisions at LEP is presented. Events consistent with two on-shell W-bosons and an isolated photon are selected from 183 pb−1 of data recorded at s=189 GeV. From these data, 17 W+W−γ candidates are selected with photon energy greater than 10 GeV, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. These events are used to measure the e+e−→W+W−γ cross-section within a set of geometric and kinematic cuts, σ̂WWγ=136±37±8 fb, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The photon energy spectrum is used to set the first direct, albeit weak, limits on possible anomalous contributions to the W+W−γγ and W+W−γZ0 vertices:−0.070GeV−2<a0/Λ2<0.070GeV−2,−0.13GeV−2<ac/Λ2<0.19GeV−2,−0.61GeV−2<an/Λ2<0.57GeV−2,where Λ represents the energy scale for new physics.

New results on silicon microstrip detectors of CMS tracker
Interstrip and backplane capacitances on silicon microstrip detectors with p+ strip on n substrate of 320μm thickness were measured for pitches between 60 and 240μm and width over pitch ratios between 0.13 and 0.5. Parametrisations of capacitance w.r.t. pitch and width were compared with data. The detectors were measured before and after being irradiated to a fluence of 4×1014protons/cm2 of 24GeV/c momentum. The effect of the crystal orientation of the silicon has been found to have a relevant influence on the surface radiation damage, favouring the choice of a 〈100〉 substrate. Working at high bias (up to 500 V in CMS) might be critical for the stability of detector, for a small width over pitch ratio. The influence of having a metal strip larger than the p+ implant has been studied and found to enhance the stability.

Precision neutral current asymmetry parameter measurements from the Tau polarization at LEP
Measurements of the $\tau$ lepton polarization and forward-backward polarization asymmetry near the Z $^0$ resonance using the OPAL detector are described. The measurements are based on analyses of $\tau \rightarrow{\rm e} \nu_e\nu_{\tau}, \tau\rightarrow \mu\nu_{\mu}\nu_{\tau}, \tau\rightarrow \pi\nu_{\tau}, \tau \rightarrow \rho\nu_{\tau}$ and $\tau\rightarrow{\rm a}_1\nu_{\tau}$ decays from a sample of 144,810 $\rm e^+e^-\rightarrow \tau^+\tau^-$ candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 151 pb $^{-1}$ . Assuming that the $\tau$ lepton decays according to V–A theory, we measure the average $\tau$ polarization near $\sqrt{s} ={\rm M}_{\mathrm{Z}}$ to be $\langle P_{\tau}\rangle= (-14.10 \pm 0.73 \pm 0.55)\%$ and the $\tau$ polarization forward-backward asymmetry to be $\rm A_{\mathrm{pol}}^{\mathrm{FB}} = (-10.55 \pm 0.76 \pm 0.25)\%$ , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Taking into account the small effects of the photon propagator, photon-Z $^0$ interference and photonic radiative corrections, these results can be expressed in terms of the lepton neutral current asymmetry parameters: \begin{eqnarray} {\cal A}_{\tau} & = & 0.1456 \pm 0.0076 \pm 0.0057, \nonumber {\cal A}_{\mathrm e}& = & 0.1454 \pm 0.0108 \pm 0.0036. \nonumber \end{eqnarray} These measurements are consistent with the hypothesis of lepton universality and combine to give ${\cal A}_{\ell} = 0.1455 \pm 0.0073$ . Within the context of the Standard Model this combined result corresponds to $=0.23172 \pm 0.00092$ . Combing these results with those from the other OPAL neutral current measurements yields a value of $=0.23211 \pm 0.00068$ .

Measurement of the hadronic cross-section for the scattering of two virtual photons at LEP
The interaction of virtual photons is investigated using the reaction ${\rm e^+e^-} \rightarrow{\rm e^+e^-}$ hadrons based on data taken by the OPAL experiment at ${\rm e^+e^-}$ centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{\rm ee}}=189-209$ GeV, for $W>5$ GeV and at an average $Q^{2}$ of 17.9 GeV $^2$ . The measured cross-sections are compared to predictions of the Quark Parton Model (QPM), to the Leading Order QCD Monte Carlo model PHOJET, to the NLO prediction for the reaction ${\rm e^+e^-}\rightarrow{\rm e^+e^-} q\bar{q}$ , and to BFKL calculations. PHOJET, NLO ${\rm e^+e^-}\rightarrow{\rm e^+e^-} q\bar{q}$ , and QPM describe the data reasonably well, whereas the cross-section predicted by a Leading Order BFKL calculation is too large.

Tests of models of color reconnection and a search for glueballs using gluon jets with a rapidity gap
.Gluon jets with a mean energy of 22 GeV and purity of 95% are selected from hadronic Z0 decay events produced in e + e- annihilations. A subsample of these jets is identified which exhibits a large gap in the rapidity distribution of particles within the jet. After imposing the requirement of a rapidity gap, the gluon jet purity is 86%. These jets are observed to demonstrate a high degree of sensitivity to the presence of color reconnection, i.e. higher order QCD processes affecting the underlying color structure. We use our data to test three QCD models which include a simulation of color reconnection: one in the Ariadne Monte Carlo, one in the Herwig Monte Carlo, and the other by Rathsman in the Pythia Monte Carlo. We find the Rathsman and Ariadne color reconnection models can describe our gluon jet measurements only if very large values are used for the cutoff parameters which serve to terminate the parton showers, and that the description of inclusive Z0 data is significantly degraded in this case. We conclude that color reconnection as implemented by these two models is disfavored. The signal from the Herwig color reconnection model is less clear and we do not obtain a definite conclusion concerning this model. In a separate study, we follow recent theoretical suggestions and search for glueball-like objects in the leading part of the gluon jets. No clear evidence is observed for these objects.

Search for associated production of massive states decaying into two photons in e+e− annihilations at =88–209 GeV
A search is performed for production of short-lived particles in e+e−→XY, with X→γγ and Y→ff̄, for scalar X and scalar or vector Y. Model-independent limits in the range of 25–60 femtobarns are presented on σ(e+e−→XY)×B(X→γγ)×B(Y→ff̄) for centre-of-mass energies in the range 205–207 GeV. The data from all LEP centre-of-mass energies 88–209 GeV are also interpreted in the context of fermiophobic Higgs boson models, for which a lower mass limit of 105.5 GeV is obtained for a “benchmark” fermiophobic Higgs boson.

DC–DC powering for the CMS pixel upgrade
Abstract The CMS experiment plans to replace its silicon pixel detector with a new one with improved rate capability and an additional detection layer at the end of 2016. In order to cope with the increased number of detector modules the new pixel detector will be powered via DC–DC converters close to the sensitive detector volume. This paper reviews the DC–DC powering scheme and reports on the ongoing R&D program to develop converters for the pixel upgrade. Design choices are discussed and results from the electrical and thermal characterisation of converter prototypes are shown. An emphasis is put on system tests with up to 24 converters. The performance of pixel modules powered by DC–DC converters is compared to conventional powering. The integration of the DC–DC powering scheme into the pixel detector is described and system design issues are reviewed.

The DC-DC conversion power system of the CMS Phase-1 pixel upgrade
The pixel detector of the CMS experiment will be exchanged during the year-end technical stop in 2016/2017, as part of the experiment's Phase-1 upgrade. The new device will feature approximately twice the number of readout channels, and consequently the power consumption will be doubled. By moving to a DC-DC conversion powering scheme, it is possible to power the new pixel detector with the existing power supplies and cable plant.

Dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Dijet cross sections are presented using photoproduction data obtained with the ZEUS detector during 1994. These measurements represent an extension of previous results, as the higher statistics allow cross sections to be measured at higher jet transverse energy (E τ jet ). Jets are identified in the hadronic final state using three different algorithms, and the cross sections compared to complete next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Agreement with these calculations is seen for the pseudorapidity dependence of the direct photon events with E T jet > 6 GeV and of the resolved photon events with E t jet > 11 GeV. Calculated cross sections for resolved photon processes with 6 GeV < E T jet < 11 GeV lie below the data.

Neutral strange particle production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
This paper presents measurements ofK 0 and Λ production in neutral current, deep inelastic scattering of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons in the kinematic range 10<Q 2<640 GeV2, 0.0003<x<0.01, andy>0.04. Average multiplicities forK 0 and Λ production are determined for transverse momentap T>0.5 GeV and pseudorapidities |η|<1.3. The multiplicities favour a stronger strange to light quark suppression in the fragmentation chain than found ine + e − experiments. The production properties ofK 0' s in events with and without a large rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction are compared. The ratio of neutralK 0' s to charged particles per event in the measured kinematic range is, within the present statistics, the same in both samples.

Search for stable and long-lived massive charged particles in e+e− collisions at =130−183 GeV
A search for stable and long-lived massive particles of electric charge |Q/e|=1 or 2/3, pair-produced in e+e− collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 130 to 183 GeV, is reported by the OPAL collaboration at LEP. No evidence for production of these particles was observed in a mass range between 45 and 89.5 GeV. Model-independent upper limits on the production cross-section between 0.05 and 0.19 pb have been derived for scalar and spin-1/2 particles with charge ±1. Within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM), this implies a lower limit of 82.5 (83.5) GeV on the mass of long-lived right- (left-)handed scalar muons and scalar taus. Long-lived charged leptons and charginos are excluded for masses below 89.5 GeV. For particles with charge ±2/3 the upper limits on the production cross-section vary between 0.05 and 0.2 pb. All limits, on masses and on cross-sections, are valid at the 95% confidence level for particles with lifetimes longer than 10−6 s.

Measurement of the branching ratio for →τ decays
Using about 3.9 million hadronic Z decays from e+e− collisions recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies s≈MZ, the branching ratio for the decay D−s→τ−ν̄τ has been measured to be BR(D−s→τ−ν̄τ)=(7.0±2.1(stat)±2.0(syst))%. This result can be used to derive the decay constant of the D−s meson: fDs=(286±44(stat)±41(syst))MeV.

Search for monochromatic pion emission in annihilation from atomic p states
Narrow states observable through the emission of monoenergetic charged pions have been searched for in pp annihilation at rest in a gaseous hydrogen target where annihilation from atomic angular momentum L = 1 states dominates. No structure is observed. The 5σ upper limit for the production of narrow states in the mass range 1100–1670 MeV is 2 × 10−3 of all annihilations.

W boson polarisation at LEP2
Elements of the spin density matrix for W bosons in e+e−→W+W−→qq̄′ℓνℓ events are measured from data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP. This information is used to calculate polarised differential cross-sections and to search for CP-violating effects. Results are presented for W bosons produced in e+e− Collisions with centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV. The average fraction of W bosons that are longitudinally polarised is found to be (23.9±2.1±1.1)% compared to a Standard Model prediction of (23.9±0.1)%. All results are consistent with CP conservation.

The CMS tracker operation and performance at the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge
During summer 2006 a fraction of the CMS silicon strip tracker was operated in a comprehensive slice test called the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge (MTCC). At the MTCC, cosmic rays detected in the muon chambers were used to trigger the readout of all CMS sub-detectors in the general data acquisition system and in the presence of the 4 T magnetic field produced by the CMS superconducting solenoid. This document describes the operation of the Tracker hardware and software prior, during and after data taking. The performance of the detector as resulting from the MTCC data analysis is also presented.

Search for lepton flavour violation in e+e− collisions at =189–209 GeV
We search for lepton flavour violating events (eμ, eτ and μτ) that could be directly produced in e+e− annihilations, using the full available data sample collected with the OPAL detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 GeV and 209 GeV. In general, the Standard Model expectations describe the data well for all the channels and at each s. A single eμ event is observed where according to our Monte Carlo simulations only 0.019 events are expected from Standard Model processes. We obtain the first limits on the cross-sections σ(e+e−→eμ, eτ and μτ) as a function of s at LEP2 energies.

Search for charged excited leptons in e+e− collisions at =183–209 GeV
A search for charged excited leptons decaying into a lepton and photon has been performed using approximately 680 pb-1 of e+e- collision data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV. No evidence for their existence was found. Upper limits on the product of the cross-section and the branching fraction are inferred. Using results from the search for singly produced excited leptons, upper limits on the ratio of the excited lepton coupling constant to the compositeness scale are calculated. From pair production searches, 95% confidence level lower limits on the masses of excited electrons, muons and taus are determined to be 103.2 GeV.

Experimental studies of unbiased gluon jets from<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>e</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mrow><mml:mi>−</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math>annihilations using the jet boost algorithm
We present the first experimental results based on the jet boost algorithm, a technique to select unbiased samples of gluon jets in ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ annihilations, i.e. gluon jets free of biases introduced by event selection or jet finding criteria. Our results are derived from hadronic ${Z}^{0}$ decays observed with the OPAL detector at the LEP ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider at CERN. First, we test the boost algorithm through studies with HERWIG Monte Carlo events and find that it provides accurate measurements of the charged particle multiplicity distributions of unbiased gluon jets for jet energies larger than about 5 GeV, and of the jet particle energy spectra (fragmentation functions) for jet energies larger than about 14 GeV. Second, we apply the boost algorithm to our data to derive unbiased measurements of the gluon jet multiplicity distribution for energies between about 5 and 18 GeV, and of the gluon jet fragmentation function at 14 and 18 GeV. In conjunction with our earlier results at 40 GeV, we then test QCD calculations for the energy evolution of the distributions, specifically the mean and first two nontrivial normalized factorial moments of the multiplicity distribution, and the fragmentation function. The theoretical results are found to be in global agreement with the data, although the factorial moments are not well described for jet energies below about 14 GeV.

Measurement of the hadronic photon structure function F2 at LEP2
The hadronic structure function of the photon F2γ(x,Q2) is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the photon virtuality Q2 using deep-inelastic scattering data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e− centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F2γ are extended to an average Q2 of 〈Q2〉=780 GeV2 using data in the kinematic range 0.15<x<0.98. The Q2 evolution of F2γ is studied for 12.1<〈Q2〉<780 GeV2 using three ranges of x. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F2γ with F2γ(Q2)/α=(0.08±0.02+0.05−0.03)+(0.13±0.01+0.01−0.01)lnQ2, where Q2 is in GeV2, for the central x region 0.10–0.60. Several parameterisations of F2γ are in qualitative agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data.

Search for dark matter particles in proton-proton collisions at s = 8 $$ \sqrt{s}=8 $$ TeV using the razor variables
A search for dark matter particles directly produced in proton-proton collisions recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 18.8 fb−1, at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The event selection requires at least two jets and no isolated leptons. The razor variables are used to quantify the transverse momentum balance in the jet momenta. The study is performed separately for events with and without jets originating from b quarks. The observed yields are consistent with the expected backgrounds and, depending on the nature of the production mechanism, dark matter production at the LHC is excluded at 90% confidence level for a mediator mass scale Λ below 1 TeV. The use of razor variables yields results that complement those previously published.

Differential cross sections of D photoproduction in ep collisions at HERA
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data.

Measurement of triple gauge boson couplings from W $^+$ W $^-$ production at LEP energies up to 189 GeV
A measurement of triple gauge boson couplings is presented, based on W-pair data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP during 1998 at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV with an integrated luminosity of 183 pb $^{-1}$ . After combining with our previous measurements at centre-of-mass energies of 161–183 GeV we obtain $\kappa=0.97_{-0.16}^{+0.20}$ , $g^{\mathrm{z}}_1=0.991^{+0.060}_{-0.057}$ and $\lambda=-0.110_{-0.055}^{+0.058}$ , where the errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined by setting the other two couplings to their Standard Model values. These results are consistent with the Standard Model expectations.

Measurement of $|{\rm V}_{\rm ub}|$ using $b$ hadron semileptonic decay
The magnitude of the CKM matrix element Vub is determined by measuring the inclusive charmless semileptonic branching fraction of beauty hadrons at OPAL based on b -> Xu l nu event topology and kinematics. This analysis uses OPAL data collected between 1991 and 1995, which correspond to about four million hadronic Z decays. We measure Br(b -> Xu l) to be (1.63 +/- 0.53 +0.55/-0.62) x 10^(-3). The first uncertainty is the statistical error and the second is the systematic error. From this analysis, Vub is determined to be: |Vub| = (4.00 +/- 0.65(stat) +0.67/-0.76(sys) +/- 0.19(HQE)) x 10^(-3). The last error represents the theoretical uncertainties related to the extraction of |Vub| from Br(b -> Xu l) using the Heavy Quark Expansion.

Measurement of the mass and width of the W boson in e+e− collisions at 189 GeV
The mass and width of the W boson are determined in e+e− collisions at LEP using 183 pb−1 of data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy s=189 GeV with the OPAL detector. The invariant mass distributions from 970 W+W−→qqqq and 1118 W+W−→qqℓνℓ candidate events are used to measure the mass of the W boson, MW=80.451±0.076 (stat.)±0.049 (syst.) GeV. A direct measurement of the width of the W boson gives ΓW=2.09±0.18 (stat.)±0.09 (syst.) GeV. The results are combined with previous OPAL results from 78 pb−1 of data recorded with s from 161 to 183 GeV, to obtain: MW=80.432±0.066 (stat.)±0.045 (syst.) GeV, ΓW=2.04±0.16 (stat.)±0.09 (syst.) GeV. The consistency of the direct measurement of MW with that inferred from other measurements of electroweak parameters provides an important test of the Standard Model of electroweak interactions.

Detector modules for the ATLAS SCT endcaps
1976 double-sided detector modules are needed to equip the endcaps of the silicon microstrip tracker SCT of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. This paper describes their design and presents results from a series of prototype modules.

Search for leptoquarks in electron–photon scattering at up to 209 GeV at LEP
Searches for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks, and for squarks in R-parity violating SUSY models with the direct decay of the squark into Standard Model particles, have been performed using e+e− collisions collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at e+e− centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV. No excess of events is found over the expectation from Standard Model background processes. Limits are computed on the leptoquark couplings for different values of the branching ratio to electron–quark final states.

A DC-DC conversion powering scheme for the CMS Phase-1 pixel upgrade
The CMS pixel detector was designed for a nominal instantaneous LHC luminosity of 1⋅1034 cm−2s−1. During Phase-1 of the LHC upgrade, the instantaneous luminosity will be increased to about twice this value. To preserve the excellent performance of the pixel detector despite the increase in particle rates and track densities, the CMS Collaboration foresees the exchange of its pixel detector in the shutdown 2016/2017. The new pixel detector will be improved in many respects, and will comprise twice the number of readout channels. A powering scheme based on DC-DC conversion will be adopted, which will enable the provision of the required power with the present cable plant.

Measurement of the B0 lifetime and oscillation frequency using →ℓ decays
The lifetime and oscillation frequency of the B0 meson has been measured using B̄0→D∗+ℓ−ν̄ decays recorded on the Z0 peak with the OPAL detector at LEP. The D∗+→D0π+ decays were reconstructed using an inclusive technique and the production flavour of the B0 mesons was determined using a combination of tags from the rest of the event. The results τB0=1.541±0.028±0.023ps,Δmd=0.497±0.024±0.025ps−1 were obtained, where in each case the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for new physics in rare B decays
A search for the decay B±→K±K±π∓ was performed using data collected by the OPAL detector at LEP. These decays are strongly suppressed in the Standard Model but could occur with a higher branching ratio in supersymmetric models, especially in those with R-parity violating couplings. No evidence for a signal was observed and a 90% confidence level upper limit of 1.29×10−4 was set for the branching ratio.

Production rates of $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ quark pairs from gluons and $\mathrm{b\overline{b}b\overline{b}}$ events in hadronic $\mathrm{Z}^0$ decays
The rates are measured per hadronic $\mathrm{Z}^0$ decay for gluon splitting to $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ quark pairs, $g_{\mathrm{b\overline{b}}}$ , and of events containing two $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ quark pairs, $g_{\mathrm{4b}}$ , using a sample of four-jet events selected from data collected with the OPAL detector. Events with an enhanced signal of gluon splitting to $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ quarks are selected if two of the jets are close in phase-space and contain detached secondary vertices. For the event sample containing two $\mathrm{b\overline{b}}$ quark pairs, three of the four jets are required to have a significantly detached secondary vertex. Information from the event topology is combined in a likelihood fit to extract the values of $g_{\mathrm{b\overline{b}}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{4b}}$ , namely \begin{eqnarray*} g_{\mathrm{b\overline{b}}} & = & (3.07 \pm 0.53 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.97\mathrm{(syst)})\times 10^{-3},\\ g_{\mathrm{4b}} & = & (0.36\pm 0.17 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.27\mathrm{(syst)})\times 10^{-3}. \end{eqnarray*}

Particle multiplicity of unbiased gluon jets from e+e− three-jet events
The charged particle multiplicities of two- and three-jet events from the reaction e $^+$ e $^-$ $\rightarrow$ Z $^0\rightarrow hadrons$ are measured for Z $^0$ decays to light quark (uds) flavors. Using recent theoretical expressions to account for biases from event selection, results corresponding to unbiased gluon jets are extracted over a range of jet energies from about 11 to 30 GeV. We find consistency between these results and direct measurements of unbiased gluon jet multiplicity from $\Upsilon$ and Z $^0$ decays. The unbiased gluon jet data including the direct measurements are compared to corresponding results for quark jets. We perform fits based on analytic expressions for particle multiplicity in jets to determine the ratio $r\equiv\mathrm{N}_{g}/\mathrm{N}_{q}$ of multiplicities between gluon and quark jets as a function of energy. We also determine the ratio of slopes, $r^{(1)}\equiv(\mathrm{d}\mathrm{N}_{g} /\mathrm{d}y) /(\mathrm{d}\mathrm{N}_{q} /\mathrm{d}y)$ , and of curvatures, $r^{(2)}\equiv(\mathrm{d}^2\mathrm{N}_{g} /\mathrm{d}y^2) /(\mathrm{d}^2\mathrm{N}_{q} /\mathrm{d}y^2)$ , where y specifies the energy scale. At 30 GeV, we find $r=1.422\pm0.051,r^{(1)}=1.761\pm0.071$ and $r^{(2)}=1.98\pm0.13$ , where the uncertainties are the statistical and systematic terms added in quadrature. These results are in general agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition, we use the measurements of the energy dependence of ${\mathrm{N}}_{g}$ and ${\mathrm{N}}_{q}$ to determine an effective value of the ratio of QCD color factors, $C_{\mathrm A}/C_{\mathrm F}$ . Our result, $C_{\mathrm A}/C_{\mathrm F}=2.23\pm0.14 $ (total), is consistent with the QCD value of 2.25.

A measurement of the τ−→μ−ν̄μντ branching ratio
The τ−→μ−ν̄μντ branching ratio has been measured using data collected from 1990 to 1995 by the OPAL detector at the LEP collider. The resulting value of B(τ−→μ−ν̄μντ)=0.1734±0.0009(stat)±0.0006(syst) has been used in conjunction with other OPAL measurements to test lepton universality, yielding the coupling constant ratios gμ/ge=1.0005±0.0044 and gτ/ge=1.0031±0.0048, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of unity. A value for the Michel parameter η=0.004±0.037 has also been determined and used to find a limit for the mass of the charged Higgs boson, mH±>1.28tanβ, in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Flavour independent search for Higgs bosons decaying into hadronic final states in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">e</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:msup><mml:mi mathvariant="normal">e</mml:mi><mml:mo>−</mml:mo></mml:msup></mml:math> collisions at LEP
A search for the Higgsstrahlung process e+e−→hZ is described, where the neutral Higgs boson h is assumed to decay into hadronic final states. In order to be sensitive to a broad range of models, the search is performed independent of the flavour content of the Higgs boson decay. The analysis is based on e+e− collision data collected by the OPAL detector at energies between 192 and 209 GeV. The search does not reveal any significant excess over the Standard Model background prediction. Results are combined with previous searches at energies around 91 and at 189 GeV. A limit is set on the product of the cross-section and the hadronic branching ratio of the Higgs boson, as a function of the Higgs boson mass. Assuming the hZ coupling predicted by the Standard Model, and a Higgs boson decaying only into hadronic final states, a lower bound of 104 GeV/c2 is set on the mass at the 95% confidence level.

Multi-photon production in e+e− collisions at = 189 GeV
The process e+e−→γγ(γ) is studied using data recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data sample taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 178 pb−1. The measured cross-section agrees well with the expectation from QED. A fit to the angular distribution is used to obtain improved limits at 95% CL on the QED cut-off parameters: Λ+> 304 GeV and Λ−> 295 GeV as well as a mass limit for an excited electron, Me∗> 306 GeV assuming equal e∗eγ and eeγ couplings. Graviton exchange in the context of theories with higher dimensions is excluded for scales G+< 660 GeV and G−< 634 GeV. No evidence for resonance production is found in the invariant mass spectrum of photon pairs. Limits are obtained for the cross-section times branching ratio for a resonance decaying into two photons and produced in association with another photon.

Search for Higgs bosons and other massive states decaying into two photons in e+e− collisions at 189 GeV
A search is described for the generic process e+e−→XY, where X is a neutral heavy scalar boson decaying into a pair of photons, and Y is a neutral heavy boson (scalar or vector) decaying into a fermion pair. The search is motivated mainly by the cases where either X, or both X and Y, are Higgs bosons. In particular, we investigate the case where X is the Standard Model Higgs boson and Y the Z0 boson. Other models with enhanced Higgs boson decay couplings to photon pairs are also considered. The present search combines the data set collected by the OPAL collaboration at 189 GeV collider energy, having an integrated luminosity of 182.6 pb−1, with data samples collected at lower energies. The search results have been used to put 95% confidence level bounds, as functions of the mass MX, on the product of the cross-section and the relevant branching ratios, both in a model independent manner and for the particular models considered.

Z boson pair production in e+e− collisions at and 189 GeV
A study of Z boson pair production in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies near 183 GeV and 189 GeV is reported. Final states containing only leptons, (ℓ+ℓ−ℓ+ℓ− and ℓ+ℓ−νν), quark and lepton pairs, (qqℓ+ℓ−, qqνν) and the all-hadronic final state (qqqq) are considered. In all states with at least one Z boson decaying hadronically, qq and bb final states are considered separately using lifetime and event-shape tags, thereby improving the cross-section measurement. At s=189 GeV the Z-pair cross section was measured to be 0.80+0.14−0.13(stat.)+0.06−0.05(syst.)pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. At s=183 GeV the 95% C.L. upper limit is 0.55pb. Limits on anomalous ZZγ and ZZZ couplings are derived.

Measurement of the branching ratio for the process →τ
The inclusive branching ratio for the process b→τ−ν̄τX has been measured using hadronic Z decays collected by the OPAL experiment at LEP in the years 1992–2000. The result is: BR(b→τ−ν̄τX)=(2.78±0.18±0.51)%. This measurement is consistent with the Standard Model expectation and puts a constraint of tanβ/MH±<0.53 GeV−1 at the 95% confidence level on Type II Two Higgs Doublet Models.

Measurement of the charm structure function F2,c of the photon at LEP
The production of charm quarks is studied in deep-inelastic electron–photon scattering using data recorded by the OPAL detector at LEP at nominal e+e− centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. The charm quarks have been identified by full reconstruction of charged D★ mesons using their decays into D0π with the D0 observed in two decay modes with charged particle final states, Kπ and Kπππ. The cross-section σD★ for production of charged D★ in the reaction e+e−→e+e−D★X is measured in a restricted kinematical region using two bins in Bjorken x, 0.0014<x<0.1 and 0.1<x<0.87. From σD★ the charm production cross-section σ(e+e−→e+e−cc̄X) and the charm structure function of the photon F2,cγ are determined in the region 0.0014<x<0.87 and 5<Q2<100 GeV2 . For x>0.1 the perturbative QCD calculation at next-to-leading order agrees perfectly with the measured cross-section. For x<0.1 the measured cross-section is 43.8±14.3±6.3±2.8 pb with a next-to-leading order prediction of 17.0+2.9−2.3 pb.

Bose–Einstein correlations of π0 pairs from hadronic Z0 decays
We observe Bose–Einstein correlations in π0 pairs using back-to-back two jet hadronic events from Z0 decays in the data sample collected by the OPAL detector at LEP 1 from 1991 to 1995. Using a static Gaussian picture for the pion emitter source, we obtain the chaoticity parameter λ=0.55±0.10±0.10 and the source radius R=(0.59±0.08±0.05) fm. According to the JETSET and HERWIG Monte Carlo models, the Bose–Einstein correlations in our data sample largely connect π0s originating from the decays of different hadrons. Prompt pions formed at string break-ups or cluster decays only form a small fraction of the sample.

Measurement of the mass of the W boson in ee collisions using the fully leptonic channel
A novel method of determining the mass of the W boson in the ${\rm W^+ W^-} \to \ell \nu \ell^\prime \nu^\prime$ channel is presented and applied to 667 pb-1 of data recorded at center-of-mass energies in the range 183-207 GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The measured energies of charged leptons and the results of a new procedure based on an approximate kinematic reconstruction of the events are combined to give: M_W = 80.41\pm 0.41\pm 0.13 GeV, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The systematic error is dominated by the uncertainty on the lepton energy, which is calibrated using data, and the parameterization of the variables used in the fitting, which is obtained using Monte Carlo events. Both of these are limited by statistics.

Measurement of heavy quark forward–backward asymmetries and average B mixing using leptons in hadronic Z decays
A measurement of the forward–backward asymmetries of e+e−→bb̄ and e+e−→cc̄ events using electrons and muons produced in semileptonic decays of bottom and charm hadrons is presented. The outputs of two neural networks designed to identify b→ℓ− and c→ℓ+ decays are used in a maximum likelihood fit to a sample of events containing one or two identified leptons. The b and c quark forward–backward asymmetries at three centre-of-mass energies s and the average B mixing parameter χ̄ are determined simultaneously in the fit. Using all data collected by OPAL near the Z resonance, the asymmetries are measured to be: AFBbb̄=(4.7±1.8±0.1)%,AFBcc̄=(−6.8±2.5±0.9)%at〈s〉=89.51 GeV,AFBbb̄=(9.72±0.42±0.15)%,AFBcc̄=(5.68±0.54±0.39)%at〈s〉=91.25 GeV,AFBbb̄=(10.3±1.5±0.2)%,AFBcc̄=(14.6±2.0±0.8)%at〈s〉=92.95 GeV. For the average B mixing parameter, a value of: χ̄=(13.12±0.49±0.42)% is obtained. In each case the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These results are combined with other OPAL measurements of the b and c forward–backward asymmetries, and used to derive a value for the effective electroweak mixing angle for leptons sin2θeffℓ of 0.23238±0.00052.

Engineering for the ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) End-cap
The ATLAS SemiConductor Tracker (SCT) is a silicon-strip tracking detector which forms part of the ATLAS inner detector. The SCT is designed to track charged particles produced in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN at an energy of 14 TeV. The tracker is made up of a central barrel and two identical end-caps. The barrel contains 2112 silicon modules, while each end-cap contains 988 modules. The overall tracking performance depends not only on the intrinsic measurement precision of the modules but also on the characteristics of the whole assembly, in particular, the stability and the total material budget. This paper describes the engineering design and construction of the SCT end-caps, which are required to support mechanically the silicon modules, supply services to them and provide a suitable environment within the inner detector. Critical engineering choices are highlighted and innovative solutions are presented – these will be of interest to other builders of large-scale tracking detectors. The SCT end-caps will be fully connected at the start of 2008. Further commissioning will continue, to be ready for proton-proton collision data in 2008.

DC-DC buck converters for the CMS Tracker upgrade at SLHC
The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva, is planning major upgrades of its current pixel and strip detectors for the LHC luminosity upgrade, known as the SLHC. Due to the larger channel count and — in case of the strip tracker — increased functionality, the powering scheme adopted today, namely parallel powering of several detector modules, has to be abandoned. Instead, a powering scheme based on the DC-DC conversion technique is foreseen, which would lead to lower power losses in the supply cables, and would allow to reduce the material budget of cables and associated electronic boards in the sensitive detector volume.
