Observation of long-range, near-side angular correlations in proton-proton collisions at the LHC
Results on two-particle angular correlations for charged particles emitted in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.9, 2.36, and 7 TeV are presented, using data collected with the CMS detector over a broad range of pseudorapidity (η) and azimuthal angle (ϕ). Short-range correlations in Δη, which are studied in minimum bias events, are characterized using a simple “independent cluster” parametrization in order to quantify their strength (cluster size) and their extent in η (cluster decay width). Long-range azimuthal correlations are studied differentially as a function of charged particle multiplicity and particle transverse momentum using a 980 nb−1 data set at 7 TeV. In high multiplicity events, a pronounced structure emerges in the two-dimensional correlation function for particle pairs with intermediate p T of 1–3 GeV/c, 2.0 < |Δη| < 4.8 and Δϕ ≈ 0. This is the first observation of such a long-range, near-side feature in two-particle correlation functions in pp or $$ p\overline p $$ collisions.

Observation and studies of jet quenching in PbPb collisions at<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mrow><mml:msqrt><mml:msub><mml:mi>s</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>N</mml:mi><mml:mi>N</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:msub></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>2.76</mml:mn></mml:mrow></mml:math>TeV
Jet production in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV was studied with the CMS detector at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 inverse microbarns. Jets are reconstructed using the energy deposited in the CMS calorimeters and studied as a function of collision centrality. With increasing collision centrality, a striking imbalance in dijet transverse momentum is observed, consistent with jet quenching. The observed effect extends from the lower cut-off used in this study (jet transverse momentum = 120 GeV/c) up to the statistical limit of the available data sample (jet transverse momentum approximately 210 GeV/c). Correlations of charged particle tracks with jets indicate that the momentum imbalance is accompanied by a softening of the fragmentation pattern of the second most energetic, away-side jet. The dijet momentum balance is recovered when integrating low transverse momentum particles distributed over a wide angular range relative to the direction of the away-side jet.

Transverse-Momentum and Pseudorapidity Distributions of Charged Hadrons in<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math>Collisions at<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:msqrt><mml:mi>s</mml:mi></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>7</mml:mn><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mi>TeV</mml:mi></mml:math>
Charged-hadron transverse-momentum and pseudorapidity distributions in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are measured with the inner tracking system of the CMS detector at the LHC. The charged-hadron yield is obtained by counting the number of reconstructed hits, hit-pairs, and fully reconstructed charged-particle tracks. The combination of the three methods gives a charged-particle multiplicity per unit of pseudorapidity, dN(charged)/d(eta), for |eta| &lt; 0.5, of 5.78 +/- 0.01 (stat) +/- 0.23 (syst) for non-single-diffractive events, higher than predicted by commonly used models. The relative increase in charged-particle multiplicity from sqrt(s) = 0.9 to 7 TeV is 66.1% +/- 1.0% (stat) +/- 4.2% (syst). The mean transverse momentum is measured to be 0.545 +/- 0.005 (stat) +/- 0.015 (syst) GeV/c. The results are compared with similar measurements at lower energies.

Measurement of the inclusive W and Z production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV with the CMS experiment
A measurement of inclusive W and Z production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV is presented. The electron and muon decay channels are analyzed in a data sample collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. The measured inclusive cross sections are σ(pp → WX) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{\text{W}} \to \ell \nu } \right) $ = 10.31 ± 0.02 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.) ± 0.10 (th.) ± 0.41 (lumi.) nb and σ(pp → ZX) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{\text{Z}} \to {\ell^{+} }{\ell^{-} }} \right) $ = 0.974 ± 0.007 (stat.) ± 0.007 (syst.) ± 0.018 (th.) ± 0.039 (lumi.) nb, limited to the dilepton invariant mass range 60 to 120 GeV. The luminosity-independent cross section ratios are (σ(pp → WX) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{\text{W}} \to \ell \nu } \right) $ /(σ(pp → ZX) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{\text{Z}} \to {\ell^{+} }{\ell^{-} }} \right) $ = 10.54 ± 0.07 (stat.) ± 0.08 (syst.) ± 0.16 (th.) and (σ(pp → W+ X) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{{\text{W}}^{ + }} \to {\ell^{+} }\nu } \right) $ /(σ(pp → W− X) × $ \mathcal{B}\left( {{{\text{W}}^{-} } \to {\ell^{-} }\bar{\nu }} \right) $ = 1.421 ± 0.006 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.) ± 0.029 (th.). The measured values agree with next-to-next-to-leading order QCD cross section calculations based on recent parton distribution functions.

A comparison of the relative yields of Υ resonances in the μ(+)μ(-) decay channel in Pb-Pb and pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV is performed with data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Using muons of transverse momentum above 4 GeV/c and pseudorapidity below 2.4, the double ratio of the Υ(2S) and Υ(3S) excited states to the Υ(1S) ground state in Pb-Pb and pp collisions, [Υ(2S+3S)/Υ(1S)](Pb-Pb)/[Υ(2S+3S)/Υ(1S)](pp), is found to be 0.31(-0.15)(+0.19)(stat)±0.03(syst). The probability to obtain the measured value, or lower, if the true double ratio is unity, is calculated to be less than 1%.

Strange particle production in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ and 7 TeV
The spectra of strange hadrons are measured in proton-proton collisions, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9 and 7 TeV. The $ {\text{K}}_{\text{S}}^0 $ , Λ, and Ξ− particles and their antiparticles are reconstructed from their decay topologies and the production rates are measured as functions of rapidity and transverse momentum, p T. The results are compared to other experiments and to predictions of the Pythia Monte Carlo program. The p T distributions are found to differ substantially from the Pythia results and the production rates exceed the predictions by up to a factor of three.

Measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV
Measurements of inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV are presented, based on 2.9 pb−1 of data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The measurements, performed in the electron and muon decay channels, are combined to give $ \sigma \left( {{\text{pp}} \to {\text{W}}X} \right) \times \mathcal{B}\left( {{\text{W}} \to \ell \nu } \right) = 9.95\pm 0.07\left( {{\text{stat}}{.}} \right)\pm 0.28\left( {{\text{syst}}{.}} \right)\pm 1.09 $ (lumi.) nb and $ \sigma \left( {{\text{pp}} \to {\text{Z}}X} \right) \times \mathcal{B}\left( {Z \to {\ell^{+} }{\ell^{-} }} \right) = 0.931\pm 0.026\left( {{\text{stat}}{.}} \right)\pm 0.023\left( {{\text{syst}}{.}} \right)\pm 0.102 $ (lumi.) nb, where ℓ stands for either e or μ. Theoretical predictions, calculated at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recent parton distribution functions, are in agreement with the measured cross sections. Ratios of cross sections, which incur an experimental systematic uncertainty of less than 4%, are also reported.

Search for Dijet Resonances in 7 TeV<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>p</mml:mi><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math>Collisions at CMS
A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $2.9\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% confidence level: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and ${E}_{6}$ diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

The inclusive jet cross section is measured in pp collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC using the CMS experiment. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 34 inverse picobarns. The measurement is made for jet transverse momenta in the range 18-1100 GeV and for absolute values of rapidity less than 3. The measured cross section extends to the highest values of jet pT ever observed and, within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties, is generally in agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions.

CMS tracking performance results from early LHC operation
The first LHC pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9 and 2.36 TeV were recorded by the CMS detector in December 2009. The trajectories of charged particles produced in the collisions were reconstructed using the all-silicon Tracker and their momenta were measured in the 3.8 T axial magnetic field. Results from the Tracker commissioning are presented including studies of timing, efficiency, signal-to-noise, resolution, and ionization energy. Reconstructed tracks are used to benchmark the performance in terms of track and vertex resolutions, reconstruction of decays, estimation of ionization energy loss, as well as identification of photon conversions, nuclear interactions, and heavy-flavour decays.

Charged particle multiplicities in pp interactions at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ , 2.36, and 7 TeV
Measurements of primary charged hadron multiplicity distributions are presented for non-single-diffractive events in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ , 2.36, and 7 TeV, in five pseudorapidity ranges from |η| < 0.5 to |η| < 2.4. The data were collected with the minimum-bias trigger of the CMS experiment during the LHC commissioning runs in 2009 and the 7 TeV run in 2010. The multiplicity distribution at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9\;{\text{TeV}} $ is in agreement with previous measurements. At higher energies the increase of the mean multiplicity with $ \sqrt {s} $ is underestimated by most event generators. The average transverse momentum as a function of the multiplicity is also presented. The measurement of higher-order moments of the multiplicity distribution confirms the violation of Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling that has been observed at lower energies.

The W+W- and ZZ production cross sections are measured in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC in data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.3 inverse femtobarns. The measurements are performed in the leptonic decay modes W+W- to l' nu l'' nu and ZZ to 2l 2l', where l = e, mu and l'(l'') = e, mu, tau. The measured cross sections sigma(pp to W+W-) = 69.9 +/- 2.8 (stat.) +/- 5.6 (syst.) +/- 3.1 (lumi.) pb and sigma(pp to ZZ) = 8.4 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 0.7 (syst.) +/- 0.4 (lumi.) pb, for both Z bosons produced in the mass region 60 < m[Z] < 120 GeV, are consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of the diboson production cross sections at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV.

LHC forward physics
The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

The first measurement of the cross section for top-quark pair production in pp collisions at the LHC at center-of-mass energy sqrt(s)= 7 TeV has been performed using 3.1 {\pm} 0.3 inverse pb of data recorded by the CMS detector. This result utilizes the final state with two isolated, highly energetic charged leptons, large missing transverse energy, and two or more jets. Backgrounds from Drell-Yan and non-W/Z boson production are estimated from data. Eleven events are observed in the data with 2.1 {\pm} 1.0 events expected from background. The measured cross section is 194 {\pm} 72 (stat.) {\pm} 24 (syst.) {\pm} 21 (lumi.) pb, consistent with next-to-leading order predictions.

Measurement of the underlying event activity at the LHC with $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV and comparison with $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ TeV
A measurement of the underlying activity in scattering processes with a hard scale in the several GeV region is performed in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 0.9 and 7 TeV, using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The production of charged particles with pseudorapidity |eta| < 2 and transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c is studied in the azimuthal region transverse to that of the leading set of charged particles forming a track-jet. A significant growth of the average multiplicity and scalar-pT sum of the particles in the transverse region is observed with increasing pT of the leading track-jet, followed by a much slower rise above a few GeV/c. For track-jet pT larger than a few GeV/c, the activity in the transverse region is approximately doubled with a centre-of-mass energy increase from 0.9 to 7 TeV. Predictions of several QCD-inspired models as implemented in PYTHIA are compared to the data.

The FP420 R&amp;D project: Higgs and New Physics with forward protons at the LHC
We present the FP420 R&D project, which has been studying the key aspects of the development and installation of a silicon tracker and fast-timing detectors in the LHC tunnel at 420 m from the interaction points of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. These detectors would measure precisely very forward protons in conjunction with the corresponding central detectors as a means to study Standard Model (SM) physics, and to search for and characterise new physics signals. This report includes a detailed description of the physics case for the detector and, in particular, for the measurement of Central Exclusive Production, pp→p+ϕ+p, in which the outgoing protons remain intact and the central system ϕ may be a single particle such as a SM or MSSM Higgs boson. Other physics topics discussed are γγ and γp interactions, and diffractive processes. The report includes a detailed study of the trigger strategy, acceptance, reconstruction efficiencies, and expected yields for a particularpp→pHp measurement with Higgs boson decay in theb mode. The document also describes the detector acceptance as given by the LHC beam optics between the interaction points and the FP420 location, the machine backgrounds, the new proposed connection cryostat and the moving (``Hamburg'') beam-pipe at 420 m, and the radio-frequency impact of the design on the LHC. The last part of the document is devoted to a description of the 3D silicon sensors and associated tracking performances, the design of two fast-timing detectors capable of accurate vertex reconstruction for background rejection at high-luminosities, and the detector alignment and calibration strategy.

Long-range and short-range dihadron angular correlations in central PbPb collisions at $ \sqrt {{{s_{\text{NN}}}}} $ = 2.76 TeV
First measurements of dihadron correlationsfor charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (∆η) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (∆ϕ). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (∆ϕ ≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all ∆η, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in ∆η are observed for particles with similar ϕ values. This phenomenon, also known as the “ridge”, persists up to at least |∆η| = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (p T) of2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of p T = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of p T = 10-12 GeV/c.

Electroweak production of the top quark is measured for the first time in pp collisions at √=7 TeV, using a data set collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb⁻¹. With an event selection optimized for t-channel production, two complementary analyses are performed. The first one exploits the special angular properties of the signal, together with background estimates from the data. The second approach uses a multivariate analysis technique to probe the compatibility with signal topology expected from electroweak top-quark production. The combined measurement of the cross section is 83.6±29.8(stat+syst)±3.3(lumi) pb, consistent with the standard model expectation.

A search for neutral minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) Higgs bosons in pp collisions at the LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) recorded by the CMS experiment. The search uses decays of the Higgs bosons to tau pairs. No excess is observed in the tau-pair invariant-mass spectrum. The resulting upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs, as a function of the pseudoscalar Higgs boson mass, yield stringent new bounds in the MSSM parameter space.

A search for Z bosons in the μ(+)μ(-) decay channel has been performed in PbPb collisions at √S(NN)=2.76 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, in a 7.2 μb(-1) data sample. The number of opposite-sign muon pairs observed in the 60-120 GeV/c(2) invariant mass range is 39, corresponding to a yield per unit of rapidity (y) and per minimum bias event of [33.8±5.5(stat)±4.4(syst)]×10(-8), in the |y|<2.0 range. Rapidity, transverse momentum, and centrality dependencies are also measured. The results agree with next-to-leading order QCD calculations, scaled by the number of incoherent nucleon-nucleon collisions.

Search for microscopic black hole signatures at the Large Hadron Collider
A search for microscopic black hole production and decay in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been conducted by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1. Events with large total transverse energy are analyzed for the presence of multiple high-energy jets, leptons, and photons, typical of a signal expected from a microscopic black hole. Good agreement with the standard model backgrounds, dominated by QCD multijet production, is observed for various final-state multiplicities and model-independent limits on new physics in these final states are set. Using simple semi-classical approximation, limits on the minimum black hole mass are derived as well, in the range 3.5–4.5 TeV. These are the first direct limits on black hole production at a particle accelerator.

Measurements of the total and differential cross sections with respect to transverse momentum and rapidity for B+ mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.8 inverse picobarns collected by the CMS experiment operating at the LHC. The exclusive decay B+ to J/psi K+, with the J/psi decaying to an oppositely charged muon pair, is used to detect B+ mesons and to measure the production cross section as a function of the transverse momentum and rapidity of the B. The total cross section for p_t(B) > 5 GeV and |y(B)| < 2.4 is measured to be 28.1 +/- 2.4 +/- 2.0 +/- 3.1 microbarns, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the last is from the luminosity measurement.

The differential cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons has been measured as a function of the photon transverse energy E(T)(γ) in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using data recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1). Photons are required to have a pseudorapidity |η(γ)|<1.45 and E(T)(γ)>21 GeV, covering the kinematic region 0.006<x(T)<0.086. The measured cross section is found to be in agreement with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations.

Search for new physics with jets and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV
A search for new physics is presented based on an event signature of at least three jets accompanied by large missing transverse momentum, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns collected in proton--proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC. No excess of events is observed above the expected standard model backgrounds, which are all estimated from the data. Exclusion limits are presented for the constrained minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model. Cross section limits are also presented using simplified models with new particles decaying to an undetected particle and one or two jets.

Measurements of dijet azimuthal decorrelations in pp collisions at √s=7 TeV using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC are presented. The results are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD calculations and various Monte Carlo event generators. The dijet azimuthal distributions are found to be sensitive to initial-state gluon radiation.

Charged particle transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ and 7 TeV
The charged particle transverse momentum (p T) spectra are presented for pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ and 7 TeV. The data samples were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to integrated luminosities of 231 μb−1 and 2.96 pb−1, respectively. Calorimeter-based high-transverse-energy triggers are employed to enhance the statistical reach of the high-p T measurements. The results are compared with leading and next-to-leading order QCD and with an empirical scaling of measurements at different collision energies using the scaling variable $ {x_{\text{T}}} \equiv {{{2{p_{\text{T}}}}} \left/ {{\sqrt {s} }} \right.} $ over the p T range up to 200 GeV/c. Using a combination of x T scaling and direct interpolation at fixed p T, a reference transverse momentum spectrum at $ \sqrt {s} = 2.76 $ TeV is constructed, which can be used for studying high-p T particle suppression in the dense QCD medium produced in heavy-ion collisions at that centre-of-mass energy.

Measurements of the differential production cross sections dσ/dpTB and dσ/dyB for B0 mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV are presented. The data set used was collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 40 pb-1. The production cross section is measured from B0 meson decays reconstructed in the exclusive final state J/ψKS0, with the subsequent decays J/ψ → μ + μ - and KS0 → π+}π-. The total cross section for pTB>5 GeV and |yB|<2.2 is measured to be 33.2 ± 2.5 ± 3.5 μb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Dijet angular distributions are measured over a wide range of dijet invariant masses in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV, at the CERN LHC. The event sample, recorded with the CMS detector, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb⁻¹. The data are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of perturbative QCD, and yield no evidence of quark compositeness. With a modified frequentist approach, a lower limit on the contact interaction scale for left-handed quarks of Λ⁺ = 5.6 TeV (Λ⁻ = 6.7 TeV) for destructive (constructive) interference is obtained at the 95% confidence level.

A new measurement of the inclusive production cross section for $pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}t\overline{t}$ is performed at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and is based on the final state with one isolated, high transverse momentum muon or electron, missing transverse energy, and hadronic jets. The $t\overline{t}$ content of the selected events is enhanced by requiring the presence of at least one jet consistent with $b$-quark hadronization. The measured cross section is $150\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}9(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}17(\mathrm{syst})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6(\mathrm{lumi})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$ and is in agreement with higher-order QCD calculations. The combination of this measurement with a previous CMS result based on dileptons gives $154\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}17(\mathrm{stat}+\mathrm{syst})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}6(\mathrm{lumi})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$.

A study of events with missing transverse energy and an energetic jet is performed using $pp$ collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $36\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. An excess of these events over standard model contributions is a signature of new physics such as large extra dimensions and unparticles. The number of observed events is in good agreement with the prediction of the standard model, and significant extension of the current limits on parameters of new physics benchmark models is achieved.

Measurement of the Polarization of<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>W</mml:mi></mml:math>Bosons with Large Transverse Momenta in<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>W</mml:mi><mml:mo>+</mml:mo><mml:mtext mathvariant="bold">jets</mml:mtext></mml:math>Events at the LHC
A first measurement of the polarization of W bosons with large transverse momenta in pp collisions is presented. The measurement is based on 36 inverse picobarns of data recorded at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC. The left-handed, right-handed and longitudinal polarization fractions (f_L, f_R, f_0) of W bosons with transverse momenta larger than 50 GeV are determined using decays to both electrons and muons. The muon final state yields the most precise measurement, (f_L - f_R) = 0.240 +/- 0.036 (stat.) +/- 0.031 (syst.) and f_0 = 0.183 +/- 0.087 (stat.) +/- 0.123 (syst.) for negatively charged W bosons, and (f_L - f_R) = 0.310 +/- 0.036 (stat.) +/- 0.017 (syst.) and f_0 = 0.171 +/- 0.085 (stat.) +/- 0.099 (syst.) for positively charged W bosons. This establishes, for the first time, that W bosons produced in pp collisions with large transverse momenta are predominantly left-handed, as expected in the standard model.

It is found to be in good agreement with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative four-momentum. The size of the correlated particle emission region is seen to increase significantly with the particle multiplicity of the event.

A search for supersymmetry in the context of general gauge-mediated breaking with the lightest neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and the gravitino as the lightest is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is performed by using events containing two or more isolated photons, at least one hadronic jet, and significant missing transverse energy. No excess of events at high missing transverse energy is observed. Upper limits on the signal cross section for general gauge-mediated supersymmetry between 0.3 and 1.1 pb at the 95% confidence level are determined for a range of squark, gluino, and neutralino masses, excluding supersymmetry parameter space that was inaccessible to previous experiments.

A measurement of Wγ and Zγ production in proton–proton collisions at s=7TeV is presented. Results are based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36pb−1. The electron and muon decay channels of the W and Z are used. The total cross sections are measured for photon transverse energy ETγ>10GeV and spatial separation from charged leptons in the plane of pseudorapidity and azimuthal angle ΔR(ℓ,γ)>0.7, and with an additional dilepton invariant mass requirement of Mℓℓ>50GeV for the Zγ process. The following cross section times branching fraction values are found: σ(pp→Wγ+X)×B(W→ℓν)=56.3±5.0(stat.)±5.0(syst.)±2.3(lumi.)pb and σ(pp→Zγ+X)×B(Z→ℓℓ)=9.4±1.0(stat.)±0.6(syst.)±0.4(lumi.)pb. These measurements are in agreement with standard model predictions. The first limits on anomalous WWγ, ZZγ, and Zγγ trilinear gauge couplings at s=7TeV are set.

Search for new physics with same-sign isolated dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy at the LHC
The results of searches for new physics in events with two same-sign isolated leptons, hadronic jets, and missing transverse energy in the final state are presented. The searches use an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1 of pp collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed numbers of events agree with the standard model predictions, and no evidence for new physics is found. To facilitate the interpretation of our data in a broader range of new physics scenarios, information on our event selection, detector response, and efficiencies is provided.

A search is performed for heavy particle pairs produced in $\sqrt{s}=7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$ proton-proton collisions with $35\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The search is sensitive to squarks and gluinos of generic supersymmetry models, provided they are kinematically accessible, with minimal assumptions on properties of the lightest superpartner particle. The kinematic consistency of the selected events is tested against the hypothesis of heavy particle pair production using the dimensionless razor variable $R$, related to the missing transverse energy ${E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{miss}}$. The new physics signal is characterized by a broad peak in the distribution of ${M}_{R}$, an event-by-event indicator of the heavy particle mass scale. This new approach is complementary to ${E}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{miss}}$-based searches. After background modeling based on data, and background rejection based on $R$ and ${M}_{R}$, no significant excess of events is found beyond the standard model expectations. The results are interpreted in the context of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model as well as two simplified supersymmetry models.

Measurement of $ {\text{B}}\overline {\text{B}} $ angular correlations based on secondary vertex reconstruction at $ \sqrt {s} = 7\,{\text{TeV}} $
A measurement of the angular correlations between beauty and anti-beauty hadrons ( $ {\text{B}}\overline {\text{B}} $ ) produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the CERN LHC is presented, probing for the first time the region of small angular separation. The B hadrons are identified by the presence of displaced secondary vertices from their decays. The B hadron angular separation is reconstructed from the decay vertices and the primary-interaction vertex. The differential $ {\text{B}}\overline {\text{B}} $ production cross section, measured from a data sample collected by CMS and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.1 pb−1, shows that a sizable fraction of the $ {\text{B}}\overline {\text{B}} $ pairs are produced with small opening angles. These studies provide a test of QCD and further insight into the dynamics of $ {\text{b}}\overline {\text{b}} $ production.

The results of the first search for long-lived gluinos produced in 7 TeV $pp$ collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider are presented. The search looks for evidence of long-lived particles that stop in the CMS detector and decay in the quiescent periods between beam crossings. In a dataset with a peak instantaneous luminosity of $1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{32}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\text{ }{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, an integrated luminosity of $10\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, and a search interval corresponding to 62 hours of LHC operation, no significant excess above background was observed. Limits at the 95% confidence level on gluino pair production over 13 orders of magnitude of gluino lifetime are set. For a mass difference ${m}_{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{g}}\ensuremath{-}{m}_{{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{1}^{0}}&gt;100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$, and assuming $\mathrm{BR}(\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{g}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}g{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}}_{1}^{0})=100%$, ${m}_{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{g}}&lt;370\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/{c}^{2}$ are excluded for lifetimes from $10\text{ }\text{ }\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$ to 1000 s.

A search for quark compositeness in the form of quark contact interactions, based on hadronic jet pairs (dijets) produced in proton-proton collisions at √s=7 TeV, is described. The data sample of the study corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 pb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The dijet centrality ratio, which quantifies the angular distribution of the dijets, is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dijet system and is found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. A statistical analysis of the data provides a lower limit on the energy scale of quark contact interactions. The sensitivity of the analysis is such that the expected limit is 2.9 TeV; because the observed value of the centrality ratio at high invariant mass is below the expectation, the observed limit is 4.0 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

The ${B}_{s}^{0}$ differential production cross section is measured as functions of the transverse momentum and rapidity in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$, using the ${B}_{s}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\phi}$ decay, and compared with predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order. The data sample, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $40\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The ${B}_{s}^{0}$ is reconstructed from the decays $J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{K}^{+}{K}^{\ensuremath{-}}$. The integrated ${B}_{s}^{0}$ cross section times ${B}_{s}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\phi}$ branching fraction in the range $8&lt;{p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{B}&lt;50\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{GeV}/c$ and $|{y}^{B}|&lt;2.4$ is measured to be $6.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{nb}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the charge ratio of atmospheric muons with the CMS detector
We present a measurement of the ratio of positive to negative muon fluxes from cosmic ray interactions in the atmosphere, using data collected by the CMS detector both at ground level and in the underground experimental cavern at the CERN LHC. Muons were detected in the momentum range from 5 GeV/c to 1 TeV/c. The surface flux ratio is measured to be 1.2766±0.0032(stat.)±0.0032(syst.), independent of the muon momentum, below 100 GeV/c. This is the most precise measurement to date. At higher momenta the data are consistent with an increase of the charge ratio, in agreement with cosmic ray shower models and compatible with previous measurements by deep-underground experiments.

Measurement of Bose-Einstein correlations in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 0.9 $ and 7 TeV
Bose-Einstein correlations between identical particles are measured in samples of proton-proton collisions at 0.9 and 7 TeV centre-of-mass energies, recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The signal is observed in the form of an enhancement of number of pairs of same-sign charged particles with small relative momentum. The dependence of this enhancement on kinematic and topological features of the event is studied. Anticorrelations between same-sign charged particles are observed in the region of relative momenta higher than those in the signal region.

A search for three-jet hadronic resonance production in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been conducted by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb(-1). Events with high jet multiplicity and a large scalar sum of jet transverse momenta are analyzed using a signature-based approach. The number of expected standard model background events is found to be in good agreement with the observed events. Limits on the cross section times branching ratio are set in a model of gluino pair production with an R-parity-violating decay to three quarks, and the data rule out such particles within the mass range of 200 to 280 GeV/c2.

Search for long-lived particles in events with photons and missing energy in proton–proton collisions at <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msqrt><mml:mi>s</mml:mi></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>7</mml:mn><mml:mspace width="0.25em" /><mml:mtext>TeV</mml:mtext></mml:math>
Results are presented from a search for long-lived neutralinos decaying into a photon and an invisible particle, a signature associated with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking in supersymmetric models. The analysis is based on a 4.9fb−1 sample of proton–proton collisions at s=7TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The missing transverse energy and the time of arrival of the photon at the electromagnetic calorimeter are used to search for an excess of events over the expected background. No significant excess is observed, and lower limits at the 95% confidence level are obtained on the mass of the lightest neutralino, m>220GeV (for cτ<500mm), as well as on the proper decay length of the lightest neutralino, cτ>6000mm (for m<150GeV).

Inclusive b-hadron production cross section with muons in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7\;{\text{TeV}} $
A measurement of the b-hadron production cross section in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7\;{\text{TeV}} $ is presented. The dataset, corresponding to 85 nb−1, was recorded with the CMS experiment at the LHC using a low-threshold single-muon trigger. Events are selected by the presence of a muon with transverse momentum $ p_T^\mu > 6\;{\text{GeV}} $ with respect to the beam direction and pseudorapidity |η μ | < 2.1. The transverse momentum of the muon with respect to the closest jet discriminates events containing b hadrons from background. The inclusive b-hadron production cross section is presented as a function of muon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity. The measured total cross section in the kinematic acceptance is σ(pp → b + X → μ + X′) = 1.32 ± 0.01(stat) ± 0.30(syst) ± 0.15(lumi)μb.

A search for pair-produced bottom-like quarks in pp collisions at s=7TeV is conducted with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The decay b′→tW is considered in this search. The b′b¯′→tW−t¯W+ process can be identified by the distinctive signature of trileptons and same-sign dileptons. With a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb−1, no excess above the standard model background predictions is observed and a b′ quark with a mass between 255 and 361 GeV/c2 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

A search for physics beyond the standard model in events with at least three leptons and any number of jets is presented. The data sample corresponds to 35 inverse picobarns of integrated luminosity in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. A number of exclusive multileptonic channels are investigated and standard model backgrounds are suppressed by requiring sufficient missing transverse energy, invariant mass inconsistent with that of the Z boson, or high jet activity. Control samples in data are used to ascertain the robustness of background evaluation techniques and to minimise the reliance on simulation. The observations are consistent with background expectations. These results constrain previously unexplored regions of supersymmetric parameter space.

No excess above standard model expectations is seen in the transverse mass distribution of the electron-(missing E_T) system. Assuming standard-model-like couplings and decay branching fractions, a W' boson with a mass less than 1.36 TeV/c^2 is excluded at 95% confidence level.

A new heavy gauge boson, W′, decaying to a muon and a neutrino, is searched for in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The data, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb−1. No significant excess of events above the standard model expectation is found in the transverse mass distribution of the muon–neutrino system. Masses below 1.40 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level for a sequential standard-model-like W′. The W′ mass lower limit increases to 1.58 TeV when the present analysis is combined with the CMS result for the electron channel.

Search for light resonances decaying into pairs of muons as a signal of new physics
A search for groups of collimated muons is performed using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1. The analysis searches for production of new low-mass states decaying into pairs of muons and is designed to achieve high sensitivity to a broad range of models predicting leptonic jet signatures. With no excess observed over the background expectation, upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction times acceptance areset, ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 pb at the 95% CL depending on event topology. In addition, the results are interpreted in several benchmark models in the context of supersymmetry with a new light dark sector exploring previously inaccessible parameter space.

TOFHIR2: The readout ASIC of the CMS Barrel MIP Timing Detector
The CMS detector will be upgraded for the HL-LHC to include a MIP Timing Detector (MTD). The MTD will consist of barrel and endcap timing layers, BTL and ETL respectively, providing precision timing of charged particles. The BTL sensors are based on LYSO:Ce scintillation crystals coupled to SiPMs with TOFHIR2 ASICs for the front-end readout. A resolution of 30-60 ps for MIP signals at a rate of 2.5 Mhit/s per channel is expected along the HL-LHC lifetime. We present an overview of the TOFHIR2 requirements and design, simulation results and measurements with TOFHIR2 ASICs. The measurements of TOFHIR2 associated to sensor modules were performed in different test setups using internal test pulses or blue and UV laser pulses emulating the signals expected in the experiment. The measurements show a time resolution of 24 ps initially during Beginning of Operation (BoO) and 58 ps at End of Operation (EoO) conditions, matching well the BTL requirements. We also showed that the time resolution is stable up to the highest expected MIP rate. Extensive radiation tests were performed, both with x-rays and heavy ions, showing that TOFHIR2 is not affected by the radiation environment during the experiment lifetime.

The number of observed events is in good agreement with the predictions for the standard model background processes, and an upper limit is set on the leptoquark pair production cross section times β2 as a function of the leptoquark mass, where β is the branching fraction of the leptoquark decay to an electron and a quark. These results represent the most stringent direct limits to date for values of β greater than 0.05.

The data have been collected at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36 inverse picobarns. Comparisons are made between the data and the predictions of different QCD-based Monte Carlo models for multijet production. All models considered in this study are consistent with the data for HT > 0.5 TeV. This measurement extends to an HT range that has not been explored before.

A search for excited leptons in pp collisions at <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msqrt><mml:mi>s</mml:mi></mml:msqrt><mml:mo>=</mml:mo><mml:mn>7</mml:mn><mml:mtext> </mml:mtext><mml:mtext>TeV</mml:mtext></mml:math>
A search for excited leptons is carried out with the CMS detector at the LHC, using 36pb−1 of pp collision data recorded at s=7TeV. The search is performed for associated production of a lepton and an oppositely charged excited lepton ⁎pp→ℓℓ⁎, followed by the decay ⁎ℓ⁎→ℓγ, resulting in the ℓℓγ final state, where ℓ=e,μ. No excess of events above the standard model expectation is observed. Interpreting the findings in the context of ⁎ℓ⁎ production through four-fermion contact interactions and subsequent decay via electroweak processes, first upper limits are reported for ⁎ℓ⁎ production at this collision energy. The exclusion region in the compositeness scale Λ and excited lepton mass ⁎Mℓ⁎ parameter space is extended beyond previously established limits. For ⁎Λ=Mℓ⁎, excited lepton masses are excluded below 1070GeV/c2 for ⁎e⁎ and 1090GeV/c2 for ⁎μ⁎ at the 95% confidence level.

Search for supersymmetry in events with a lepton, a photon, and large missing transverse energy in pp collisions at $ \sqrt {s} = 7 $ TeV
A search is performed for an excess of events, over the standard model expectations, with a photon, a lepton, and large missing transverse energy in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. Such events are expected in many new physics models, in particular a supersymmetric theory that is broken via a gauge-mediated mechanism, when the lightest charged and neutral gauginos are mass degenerate. The data sample used in this search corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35 inverse picobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. No evidence of such an excess above the standard model backgrounds, dominated by W-gamma production, is found. The results are presented as 95% confidence level upper limits on the cross section for a benchmark gauge-mediated scenario, and are then converted into exclusion limits on the squark, gluino, and wino masses.

Measurement of higher-order harmonic azimuthal anisotropy in PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV
Measurements are presented by the CMS Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the higher-order harmonic coefficients that describe the azimuthal anisotropy of charged particles emitted in sqrt(s[NN]) = 2.76 TeV PbPb collisions. Expressed in terms of the Fourier components of the azimuthal distribution, the n = 3-6 harmonic coefficients are presented for charged particles as a function of their transverse momentum (0.3 < pt < 8.0 GeV), collision centrality (0-70%), and pseudorapidity (abs(eta) < 2.0). The data are analyzed using the event plane, multiparticle cumulant, and Lee-Yang zeros methods, which provide different sensitivities to initial-state fluctuations. Taken together with earlier LHC measurements of elliptic flow (n = 2), the results on higher-order harmonic coefficients develop a more complete picture of the collective motion in high-energy heavy-ion collisions and shed light on the properties of the produced medium.

Trapping in proton irradiated p<sup>+</sup>-n-n<sup>+</sup>silicon sensors at fluences anticipated at the HL-LHC outer tracker
The degradation of signal in silicon sensors is studied under conditions expected at the CERN High-Luminosity LHC. 200 μm thick n-type silicon sensors are irradiated with protons of different energies to fluences of up to 3 · 1015 neq/cm2. Pulsed red laser light with a wavelength of 672 nm is used to generate electron-hole pairs in the sensors. The induced signals are used to determine the charge collection efficiencies separately for electrons and holes drifting through the sensor. The effective trapping rates are extracted by comparing the results to simulation. The electric field is simulated using Synopsys device simulation assuming two effective defects. The generation and drift of charge carriers are simulated in an independent simulation based on PixelAV. The effective trapping rates are determined from the measured charge collection efficiencies and the simulated and measured time-resolved current pulses are compared. The effective trapping rates determined for both electrons and holes are about 50% smaller than those obtained using standard extrapolations of studies at low fluences and suggest an improved tracker performance over initial expectations.

Performance of second generation BABAR resistive plate chambers
The BABAR detector has operated nearly 200 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs), constructed as part of an upgrade of the forward endcap muon detector, for the past two years.The RPCs experience widely different background and luminosity-driven singles rates (0.01-10 Hz/cm 2 ) depending on position within the endcap.Some regions have integrated over 0.3 C/cm 2 .RPC efficiency measured with cosmic rays is high and stable.The average efficiency measured with beam is also high.However, a few of the highest rate RPCs have suffered efficiency losses of 5-15%.Although constructed with improved techniques and minimal use of linseed oil, many of the RPCs, which are operated in streamer mode, have shown increased dark currents and noise rates that are correlated with the direction of the gas flow and the integrated current.Studies of the above aging effects are presented and correlated with detector operating conditions.

A search for narrow resonances in the dijet mass spectrum is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.9 inverse pb collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level (CL) are presented on the product of the resonance cross section, branching fraction into dijets, and acceptance, separately for decays into quark-quark, quark-gluon, or gluon-gluon pairs. The data exclude new particles predicted in the following models at the 95% CL: string resonances, with mass less than 2.50 TeV, excited quarks, with mass less than 1.58 TeV, and axigluons, colorons, and E_6 diquarks, in specific mass intervals. This extends previously published limits on these models.

Results are reported from a search for the anomalous production of highly boosted Z bosons with large transverse momentum and decaying to dimuons. Such Z bosons may be produced in the decays of new heavy particles. The search uses pp collision data at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns recorded with the CMS detector. The shape of the observed transverse-momentum distribution of Z bosons is consistent with standard model expectations. Constraints are obtained on models predicting the production of excited quarks decaying via electroweak processes. Assuming a compositeness scale that is equal to the excited quark mass as well as transition coupling strengths between Z bosons and excited quarks that are equal to standard model couplings to quarks, masses of excited quarks below 1.94 TeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level. For excited quark production via a novel contact interactions, masses below 2.22 TeV are excluded, even if the excited quarks do not couple to gluons.

Physics and Beam Monitoring with Forward Shower Counters (FSC) in CMS
We propose to add forward shower counters, FSC, to CMS along the beam pipes, with 59 m . z . 140 m. These will detect showers from very forward particles with 7 . η . 11 interacting in the beam pipe and surrounding material. They increase the total rapidity coverage of CMS to nearly∆Ω = 4π, thus detecting most of the inelastic cross section σinel, including low mass diffraction. They will help increase our understanding of all high cross section processes, which is important for understanding the “underlying event” backgrounds to most physics searches. To the extent that the luminosity is well known, they may (together with all of CMS) provide the best measurement of σinel at the LHC. They are most useful when the luminosity per bunch crossing is still low enough to provide single (no pileup) collisions. They will allow measurements of single diffraction: p+ p→ p⊕X (where ⊕ means a rapidity gap) for lower masses than otherwise possible, and double diffraction: p + p → X ⊕ X with a large central rapidity gap. They can also be used as rapidity gap detectors for double pomeron exchange and central exclusive processes. Studies of exclusive processes such as γγ → μ+μ− (for luminosity calibration and eventually momentum calibration of forward spectrometers) can be made more cleanly requiring gaps in the FSC counters. Models of forward particle production can be tested indirectly through simulations of hit patterns in the counters. This may reduce the uncertainty on very high energy (E ∼ 10 eV) cosmic ray shower parameters. For heavy ion collisions, the counters act as crude forward calorimeters detecting nuclear fragments (supplementing the ZDC), as well as enabling the study of coherent quasi-elastic scattering e.g. Pb + Pb→ Pb ⊕X⊕ Pb via two-photon interactions. The counters can also be used for real-time monitoring, and if desired for vetoing in the level 1 trigger,both incoming and outgoing beam halo-generated backgrounds (separated by timing) and beam conditions generally. These counters represent a significant enhancement of the beam monitoring, and will make an invaluable contribution to the understanding of the background environment and its topology. They can also provide an additional luminosity monitor, up to luminosities such that the number of interactions per bunch crossing is 〈nX〉 ∼ 5. This note discusses mainly the physics issues; more technical details will be presented in another note. Basically we propose a set of scintillation counters at several locations between 59 m and 140 m along the beam pipes (on both sides), and read out by DAQ electronics identical to that of the HF, with some inputs to the level 1 trigger. Bunch-by-bunch information on rates etc. will be provided for LHC operations. Study of W boson production in pPb collisions at sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV
The first study of W boson production in pPb collisions is presented, for bosons decaying to a muon or electron, and a neutrino. The measurements are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6 inverse nanobarns at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s[NN]) = 5.02 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment. The W boson differential cross sections, lepton charge asymmetry, and forward-backward asymmetries are measured for leptons of transverse momentum exceeding 25 GeV, and as a function of the lepton pseudorapidity in the abs(eta[lab]) < 2.4 range. Deviations from the expectations based on currently available parton distribution functions are observed, showing the need for including W boson data in nuclear parton distribution global fits.

High level trigger configuration and handling of trigger tables in the CMS filter farm
The CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is currently being commissioned and is scheduled to collect the first pp collision data in 2008. CMS features a two-level trigger system. The Level-1 trigger, based on custom hardware, is designed to reduce the collision rate of 40 MHz to approximately 100 kHz. Data for events accepted by the Level-1 trigger are read out and assembled by an Event Builder. The High Level Trigger (HLT) employs a set of sophisticated software algorithms, to analyze the complete event information, and further reduce the accepted event rate for permanent storage and analysis. This paper describes the design and implementation of the HLT Configuration Management system. First experiences with commissioning of the HLT system are also reported.

Performance and Aging Studies of BaBar Resistive Plate Chambers
The BaBar detector is currently operating nearly 200 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs), constructed as part of an upgrade of the forward endcap muon detector in 2002. Although the average RPC efficiency remains high, numerous changes in the RPC performance (increased currents and rates) have been observed. A few of the highest rate RPCs have suffered efficiency losses of more than 15%. Several types of efficiency loss have been observed. Tests with humidified gas have shown that some of the lost efficiency is recoverable. However, efficiency losses in the highest rate regions have not yet improved with humid gases.

Measurements of t t-bar spin correlations and top-quark polarization using dilepton final states in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV
Spin correlations in the t-tbar quark system and the polarization of the top quark are measured using dilepton final states produced in pp collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}$=7 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector. The measurements are performed using events with two oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons), a significant imbalance in transverse momentum, and two or more jets, where at least one of the jets is identified as likely originating from a b quark. The spin correlations and polarization are measured through asymmetries in angular distributions of the two selected leptons, unfolded to the parton level. All measurements are found to be in agreement with predictions of the standard model.

Ratios of dijet production cross sections as a function of the absolute difference in rapidity between jets in proton-proton collisions at s√=7 TeV
A study of dijet production in proton–proton collisions was performed at s√=7~TeV for jets with p T>35 GeV and |y|<4.7 using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in 2010. Events with at least one pair of jets are denoted as “inclusive”. Events with exactly one pair of jets are called “exclusive”. The ratio of the cross section of all pairwise combinations of jets to the exclusive dijet cross section as a function of the rapidity difference between jets |Δy| is measured for the first time up to |Δy|=9.2. The ratio of the cross section for the pair consisting of the most forward and the most backward jet from the inclusive sample to the exclusive dijet cross section is also presented. The predictions of the Monte Carlo event generators pythia6 and pythia8 agree with the measurements. In both ratios the herwig++ generator exhibits a more pronounced rise versus |Δy| than observed in the data. The BFKL-motivated generators cascade and hej+ariadne predict for these ratios a significantly stronger rise than observed.

The polarizations of the Υ(1S), Υ(2S), and Υ(3S) mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √s=7  TeV, using a data sample of Υ(nS)→μ+μ- decays collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9  fb-1. The dimuon decay angular distributions are analyzed in three different polarization frames. The polarization parameters λϑ, λφ, and λϑφ, as well as the frame-invariant quantity λ˜, are presented as a function of the Υ(nS) transverse momentum between 10 and 50 GeV, in the rapidity ranges |y|<0.6 and 0.6<|y|<1.2. No evidence of large transverse or longitudinal polarizations is seen in the explored kinematic region.

Trigger Algorithm Design for a SUSY Lepton Trigger based on Forward Proton Tagging
At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) pair production of SUSY leptons in gamma-gamma interactions will often include intact off-energy protons. Including detectors in the beampipe to measure these protons can give additional information to separate these events from background. We report on expected event rates and background rejection for a slepton trigger design in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment incorporating forward proton information. We conclude that a trigger that can observe an interesting number of events is feasible with the appropriate detector hardware.
