Combination of measurements of inclusive deep inelastic $${e^{\pm }p}$$ e ± p scattering cross sections and QCD analysis of HERA data
A combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current $$e^{\pm }p$$ scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb $$^{-1}$$ and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, $$Q^2$$ , and Bjorken x. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. In addition to the experimental uncertainties, model and parameterisation uncertainties were assessed for these parton distribution functions. Variants of HERAPDF2.0 with an alternative gluon parameterisation, HERAPDF2.0AG, and using fixed-flavour-number schemes, HERAPDF2.0FF, are presented. The analysis was extended by including HERA data on charm and jet production, resulting in the variant HERAPDF2.0Jets. The inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous determination of these parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible, resulting in $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)=0.1183 \pm 0.0009 \mathrm{(exp)} \pm 0.0005\mathrm{(model/parameterisation)} \pm 0.0012\mathrm{(hadronisation)} ^{+0.0037}_{-0.0030}\mathrm{(scale)}$$ . An extraction of $$xF_3^{\gamma Z}$$ and results on electroweak unification and scaling violations are also presented.

Experimental investigation of the energy dependence of the strong coupling strength
The energy dependence of the relative production rate of three-jet events is studied in hadronic e+e− annihilation events at center of mass energies between 22 and 46.7 GeV. Three-jet events are defined by a jet finding algorithm which is closely related to the definition of resolvable jets used in O(αs2) perturbative QCD calculations, where the relative production rate of three-jet events is roughly proportional to the size of the strong coupling strength. The production rates of three-jet events in the data decrease significantly with increasing centre of mass energy. The experimental rates, which are independent of fragmentation model calculations, can be directly compared to theoretically calculated jet production rates and are in good agreement with the QCD expectations of a running coupling strength. The hypothesis of an energy independent coupling constant can be excluded with a significance of four standard derivations.

Measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) in the low-x region at HERA
A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Measurement and QCD analysis of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering cross section at HERA
A detailed analysis is presented of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep→eXY, where Y is a proton or a low mass proton excitation carrying a fraction 1-xIP>0.95 of the incident proton longitudinal momentum and the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex satisfies |t|<1 GeV2. Using data taken by the H1 experiment, the cross section is measured for photon virtualities in the range 3.5≤Q2≤1600 GeV2, triple differentially in xIP, Q2 and β=x/xIP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. At low xIP, the data are consistent with a factorisable xIP dependence, which can be described by the exchange of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept αIP(0)=1.118±0.008(exp.)+0.029 -0.010(model). Diffractive parton distribution functions and their uncertainties are determined from a next-to-leading order DGLAP QCD analysis of the Q2 and β dependences of the cross section. The resulting gluon distribution carries an integrated fraction of around 70% of the exchanged momentum in the Q2 range studied. Total and differential cross sections are also measured for the diffractive charged current process e+p→ν̄eXY and are found to be well described by predictions based on the diffractive parton distributions. The ratio of the diffractive to the inclusive neutral current ep cross sections is studied. Over most of the kinematic range, this ratio shows no significant dependence on Q2 at fixed xIP and x or on x at fixed Q2 and β.

A measurement and QCD analysis of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) at HERA
A new measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is reported for momentum transfers squared Q2 between ].5 GeV2 and 5000 GeV2 and for Bjorken x between 3 · 10−5 and 0.32 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1994. The data represent an increase in statistics by a factor of ten with respect to the analysis of the 1993 data. Substantial extension of the kinematic range towards low Q2 and x has been achieved using dedicated data samples and events with initial state photon radiation. The structure function is found to increase significantly with decreasing x, even in the lowest accessible Q2 region. The data are well described by a Next to Leading Order QCD fit and the gluon density is extracted.

First measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of proton diffraction
A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton (ep) scattering in the kinematic range 8.5 < Q2 < 50GeV2, 2.4 × 10−4 < Bjorken-x < 0.0133, and 3.7 × 10−4 < χp < 0.043. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables χp, Q2, β (= χχp) using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. the dependence of this contribution on χp is measured to be χp−n with n = 1.19 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.) independent of β and Q2, which is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of the Q2 and β dependences of a factorised structure function is presented. For all measured β, this structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2)
A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2) is reported for momentum transfers squared Q2 between 4.5 GeV2 and 1600 GeV2 and for Bjorken x between 1.8 × 10−14 and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that F2 increases significantly with decreasing x, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The Q2 dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the “diffractive” contribution to F2.

Deep inelastic scattering events with a large rapidity gap at HERA
Evidence is presented using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA for a class of deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) events (5 < Q2 < 120 GeV2) at low Bjorken-x (10−4 < x < 10−2) which have almost no hadronic energy flow in a large interval of pseudo-rapidity around the proton remnant direction and which cannot be attributed to our present understanding of DIS and fluctuations in final state hadronic fragmentation. From an integrated luminosity of 273 nb−1, 734 events, that is about 5% of the total DIS sample, have no energy deposition greater than 400 MeV forward of laboratory pseudo-rapidity ηmax = 1.8 up to the largest measurable pseudo-rapidity of about 3.65. Evidence that about 10% of observed rapidity gap events are exclusive vector meson electroproduction is presented. Good descriptions of the data are obtained using models based either on a vector meson dominance like picture, which includes a large fraction of inelastic virtual photon dissociation, or on deep inelastic electron-pomeron scattering in which the partonic sub-structure of the latter is resolved.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
The cross-section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep→eγp has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb−1 of e+p and 16.7 pb−1 of e−p collisions. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the γ∗p system in the region 5<Q2<100 GeV2 and 40<W<140 GeV. The measured cross-sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations.

Measurement of the inclusive e ± p scattering cross section at high inelasticity y and of the structure function F L
A measurement is presented of the inclusive neutral current e ± p scattering cross section using data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA during the years 2003 to 2007 with proton beam energies E p of 920, 575, and 460 GeV. The kinematic range of the measurement covers low absolute four-momentum transfers squared, 1.5 GeV2<Q 2<120 GeV2, small values of Bjorken x, 2.9⋅10−5<x<0.01, and extends to high inelasticity up to y=0.85. The structure function F L is measured by combining the new results with previously published H1 data at E p =920 GeV and E p =820 GeV. The new measurements are used to test several phenomenological and QCD models applicable in this low Q 2 and low x kinematic domain.

Measurement of Lepton-Jet Correlation in Deep-Inelastic Scattering with the H1 Detector Using Machine Learning for Unfolding
The first measurement of lepton-jet momentum imbalance and azimuthal correlation in lepton-proton scattering at high momentum transfer is presented. These data, taken with the H1 detector at HERA, are corrected for detector effects using an unbinned machine learning algorithm (multifold), which considers eight observables simultaneously in this first application. The unfolded cross sections are compared with calculations performed within the context of collinear or transverse-momentum-dependent factorization in quantum chromodynamics as well as Monte Carlo event generators.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
A measurement is presented of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering e++p→e++γ+p at HERA using data taken with the H1 detector. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon virtuality, Q2, and the invariant mass, W, of the γp system, in the kinematic range 2<Q2<20GeV2, 30<W<120GeV and |t|<1GeV2, where t is the squared momentum transfer to the proton. The measurement is compared to QCD based calculations.

Evidence for a narrow anti-charmed baryon state
A narrow resonance in D∗−p and D∗+p̄ invariant mass combinations is observed in inelastic electron–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 300 GeV and 320 GeV at HERA. The resonance has a mass of 3099±3(stat.)±5(syst.) MeV and a measured Gaussian width of 12±3(stat.) MeV, compatible with the experimental resolution. The resonance is interpreted as an anti-charmed baryon with a minimal constituent quark composition of uuddc̄, together with the charge conjugate.

Diffractive deep-inelastic scattering with a leading proton at HERA
The cross section for the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process $ep \to e X p$ is measured, with the leading final state proton detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The data analysed cover the range \xpom <0.1 in fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss, 0.08 < |t| < 0.5 GeV^{-2} in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, 2 < Q^2 < 50 GeV^2 in photon virtuality and 0.004 < \beta = x / \xpom < 1, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. For $\xpom \lapprox 10^{-2}$, the differential cross section has a dependence of approximately ${\rm d} \sigma / {\rm d} t \propto e^{6 t}$, independently of \xpom, \beta and Q^2 within uncertainties. The cross section is also measured triple differentially in \xpom, \beta and Q^2. The \xpom dependence is interpreted in terms of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept $\alpha_{\pom}(0)=1.114 \pm 0.018 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.012 ({\rm syst.}) ^{+0.040}_{-0.020} ({\rm model})$ and a sub-leading exchange. The data are in good agreement with an H1 measurement for which the event selection is based on a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the final state hadrons, after accounting for proton dissociation contributions in the latter. Within uncertainties, the dependence of the cross section on x and Q^2 can thus be factorised from the dependences on all studied variables which characterise the proton vertex, for both the pomeron and the sub-leading exchange.

Diffractive electroproduction of ρ and ϕ mesons at HERA
Diffractive electroproduction of rho and phi mesons is measured at HERA with the H1 detector in the elastic and proton dissociative channels. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51 pb^-1. About 10500 rho and 2000 phi events are analysed in the kinematic range of squared photon virtuality 2.5 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2, photon-proton centre of mass energy 35 < W < 180 GeV and squared four-momentum transfer to the proton |t| < 3 GeV^2. The total, longitudinal and transverse cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2, W and |t|. The measurements show a transition to a dominantly "hard" behaviour, typical of high gluon densities and small q\bar{q} dipoles, for Q^2 larger than 10 to 20 GeV^2. They support flavour independence of the diffractive exchange, expressed in terms of the scaling variable (Q^2 + M_V^2)/4, and proton vertex factorisation. The spin density matrix elements are measured as a function of kinematic variables. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse cross sections, the ratio of the helicity amplitudes and their relative phases are extracted. Several of these measurements have not been performed before and bring new information on the dynamics of diffraction in a QCD framework. The measurements are discussed in the context of models using generalised parton distributions or universal dipole cross sections.

Measurement of the charm and beauty structure functions using the H1 vertex detector at HERA
Inclusive charm and beauty cross sections are measured in e-p and e+p neutral current collisions at HERA in the kinematic region of photon virtuality 5<Q^2<2000 GeV^2 and Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002<x<0.05. The data were collected with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 189 pb^-1. The numbers of charm and beauty events are determined using variables reconstructed by the H1 vertex detector including the impact parameter of tracks to the primary vertex and the position of the secondary vertex. The measurements are combined with previous data and compared to QCD predictions.

Measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section at low Q2 and x at HERA
A measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section is presented in the region of low momentum transfers, 0.2 GeV2 ≤Q 2≤12 GeV2, and low Bjorken x, 5⋅10−6≤x≤0.02. The result is based on two data sets collected in dedicated runs by the H1 Collaboration at HERA at beam energies of 27.6 GeV and 920 GeV for positrons and protons, respectively. A combination with data previously published by H1 leads to a cross section measurement of a few percent accuracy. A kinematic reconstruction method exploiting radiative ep events extends the measurement to lower Q 2 and larger x. The data are compared with theoretical models which apply to the transition region from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering.

Measurement of $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$ and $F_2^{b\bar{b}}$ at low Q2 and x * using the H1 vertex detector at HERA
Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.

A first measurement is reported of the longitudinal proton structure function F_L(x,Q^2) at the ep collider HERA. It is based on inclusive deep inelastic e^+p scattering cross section measurements with a positron beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 575 and 460 GeV. Employing the energy dependence of the cross section, F_L is measured in a range of squared four-momentum transfers 12 < Q^2 < 90 GeV^2 and low Bjorken x 0.00024 < x < 0.0036. The F_L values agree with higher order QCD calculations based on parton densities obtained using cross section data previously measured at HERA.

A precision measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section at HERA
A measurement of the inclusive deep-inelastic neutral current e+p scattering cross section is reported in the region of four-momentum transfer squared, 12<=Q^2<=150 GeV^2, and Bjorken x, 2x10^-4<=x<=0.1. The results are based on data collected by the H1 Collaboration at the ep collider HERA at positron and proton beam energies of E_e=27.6 GeV and E_p=920 GeV, respectively. The data are combined with previously published data, taken at E_p=820 GeV. The accuracy of the combined measurement is typically in the range of 1.3-2%. A QCD analysis at next-to-leading order is performed to determine the parton distributions in the proton based on H1 data.

Measurement of leading neutron production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The production of leading neutrons, where the neutron carries a large fraction x L of the incoming proton's longitudinal momentum, is studied in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 122 pb−1. The semi-inclusive cross section is measured in the phase space defined by the photon virtuality 6<Q 2<100 GeV2, Bjorken scaling variable 1.5⋅10−4<x<3⋅10−2, longitudinal momentum fraction 0.32<x L <0.95 and neutron transverse momentum p T <0.2 GeV. The leading neutron structure function, $F_{2}^{LN(3)}(Q^{2},x,x_{L})$ , and the fraction of deep-inelastic scattering events containing a leading neutron are studied as a function of Q 2, x and x L . Assuming that the pion exchange mechanism dominates leading neutron production, the data provide constraints on the shape of the pion structure function.

Measurement of inclusive $$\varvec{ep}$$ e p cross sections at high $${\varvec{Q}^{2}}$$ Q 2 at $$\varvec{\sqrt{s}}=225$$ s = 225 and 252 GeV and of the longitudinal proton structure function $${\varvec{F}_{\varvec{L}}}$$ F L at HERA
Inclusive $$ep$$ double differential cross sections for neutral current deep inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken with a lepton beam energy of $$27.6$$ GeV and two proton beam energies of $$E_p=460$$ and 575 GeV corresponding to centre-of-mass energies of 225 and 252 GeV, respectively. The measurements cover the region of $$6.5\times 10^{-4} \le x \le 0.65$$ for $$35\le Q^2 \le 800$$ GeV $$^2$$ up to $$y=0.85$$ . The measurements are used together with previously published H1 data at $$E_p=920$$ GeV and lower $$Q^2$$ data at $$E_p=460$$ , $$575$$ and $$920$$ GeV to extract the longitudinal proton structure function $$F_L$$ in the region $$1.5\le Q^2 \le 800$$ GeV $$^2$$ .

Inclusive deep inelastic scattering at high Q 2 with longitudinally polarised lepton beams at HERA
A BSTRACT Inclusive e ± p single and double differential cross sections for neutral and charged current deep inelastic scattering processes are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt {s} = {319} $ GeV with a total integrated luminosity of 333.7 pb −1 shared between two lepton beam charges and two longitudinal lepton polarisation modes. The differential cross sections are measured in the range of negative four-momentum transfer squared, Q 2 , between 60 and 50 000 GeV 2 , and Bjorken x between 0 . 0008 and 0 . 65. The measurements are combined with earlier published unpolarised H1 data to improve statistical precision and used to determine the structure function $ xF_{3}^{{\gamma Z}} $ . Ameasurementoftheneutralcurrentparityviolating structure function $ F_{2}^{{\gamma Z}} $ is presented for the first time. The polarisation dependence of the charged current total cross section is also measured. The new measurements are well described by a next-to-leading order QCD fit based on all published H1 inclusive cross section data which are used to extract the parton distribution functions of the proton.

Combination and QCD analysis of charm and beauty production cross-section measurements in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections are obtained in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared of the photon $$2.5~\hbox {GeV}^2\le Q^2 \le 2000\, \hbox {GeV}^2$$ and Bjorken scaling variable $$3 \cdot 10^{-5} \le x_\mathrm{Bj} \le 5 \cdot 10^{-2}$$ . The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The running charm- and beauty-quark masses are determined as $$m_c(m_c) = 1.290^{+0.046}_{-0.041} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.062}_{-0.014} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.003}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}$$ GeV and $$m_b(m_b) = 4.049^{+0.104}_{-0.109} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.090}_{-0.032} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.001}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}~\mathrm{GeV}$$ .

On the rise of the proton structure function F2 towards low x
A measurement of the derivative (d ln F_2 / d lnx)_(Q^2)= -lambda(x,Q^2) of the proton structure function F_2 is presented in the low x domain of deeply inelastic positron-proton scattering. For 5*10^(-5)<=x<=0.01 and Q^2>=1.5 GeV^2, lambda(x,Q^2) is found to be independent of x and to increase linearly with ln(Q^2).

Measurement of D meson production and F2 in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The inclusive production of D∗±(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic scattering is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. In the kinematic region 1<Q2<100 GeV2 and 0.05<y<0.7 an e+p cross section for inclusive D∗± meson production of 8.50±0.42(stat.)+1.21−1.00(syst.) nb is measured in the visible range ptD∗>1.5 GeV and |ηD∗|<1.5. Single and double differential inclusive D∗± meson cross sections are compared to perturbative QCD calculations in two different evolution schemes. The charm contribution to the proton structure, F2c(x,Q2), is determined by extrapolating the visible charm cross section to the full phase space. This contribution is found to rise from about 10% at Q2=1.5 GeV2 to more than 25% at Q2=60 GeV2 corresponding to x values ranging from 5×10−5 to 3×10−3.

InclusiveD 0 andD*± production in neutral current deep inelasticep scattering at HERA
First results on inclusive $$\mathop {D^0 }\limits^{( - )} $$ andD*± production in neutral current deep inelasticep scattering are reported using data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA in 1994. Differential cross sections are presented for both channels and are found to agree well with QCD predictions based on the boson gluon fusion process. A charm production cross section for 10 GeV2≤Q2≤100 GeV2 and 0.01≤y≤0.7 of $$\sigma (ep \to ec\bar cX) = (17.4 \pm 1.6 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.4) nb$$ is derived. A first measurement of the charm contribution $$F_2^{c\bar c} (x,Q^2 )$$ to the proton structure function for Bjorkenx between 8·10−4 and 8·10−3 is presented. In this kinematic range a ratio $$F_2^{c\bar c} /F_2 = 0.237 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.041$$ is observed.

A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2) at low x and low Q2 at HERA
The results of a measurement of the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) and the virtual photon-proton cross section are reported for momentum transfers squared Q2 between 0.35 GeV2 and 3.5 GeV2 and for Bjorken-x values down to 6 × 10−6 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1995. The data represent an increase in kinematic reach to lower x and Q2 values of about a factor of 5 compared to previous H1 measurements. Including measurements from fixed target experiments the rise of F2 with decreasing x is found to be less steep for the lowest Q2 values measured. Phenomenological models at low Q2 are compared with the data.

Total photoproduction cross section measurement at HERA energies
We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σtot (γp) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

Hard scattering in γp interactions
We report on the investigation of the final state in interactions of quasi-real photons with protons. The data were taken with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. Evidence for hard interactions is seen in both single particle spectra and jet formation. The data can best be described by inclusion of resolved photon processess as predicted by QCD.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering and its beam charge asymmetry in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo>±</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math> collisions at HERA
A measurement of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma* p -> gamma p using e^+ p and e^- p collision data recorded with the H1 detector at HERA is presented. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 306 pb^-1, almost equally shared between both beam charges. The cross section is measured as a function of the virtuality Q^2 of the exchanged photon and the centre-of-mass energy W of the gamma* p system in the kinematic domain 6.5 < Q^2 < 80 GeV^2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and |t| < 1 GeV^2, where t denotes the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The cross section is determined differentially in t for different Q^2 and W values and exponential t-slope parameters are derived. Using e^+ p and e^- p data samples, a beam charge asymmetry is extracted for the first time in the low Bjorken x kinematic domain. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. Experimental results are discussed in the context of two different models, one based on generalised parton distributions and one based on the dipole approach.

Tests of QCD factorisation in the diffractive production of dijets in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction (Q^2<0.01 GeV^2) and deep-inelastic scattering processes (DIS, 4<Q^2<80 GeV^2). The event topology is given by ep-> e X Y, in which the system X, containing at least two jets, is separated from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y by a large rapidity gap. The dijet cross sections are compared with NLO QCD predictions based on diffractive parton densities previously obtained from a QCD analysis of inclusive diffractive DIS cross sections by H1. In DIS, the dijet data are well described, supporting the validity of QCD factorisation. The diffractive DIS dijet data are more sensitive to the diffractive gluon density at high fractional parton momentum than the measurements of inclusive diffractive DIS. In photoproduction, the predicted dijet cross section has to be multiplied by a factor of approximately 0.5 for both direct and resolved photon interactions to describe the measurements. The ratio of measured dijet cross section to NLO prediction in photoproduction is a factor 0.5+-0.1 smaller than the same ratio in DIS. This suppression is the first clear observation of QCD hard scattering factorisation breaking at HERA. The measurements are also compared to the two soft colour neutralisation models SCI and GAL. The SCI model describes diffractive dijet production in DIS but not in photoproduction. The GAL model fails in both kinematic regions.

Jet production in ep collisions at high Q 2 and determination of α s
The production of jets is studied in deep-inelastic ep scattering at large negative four momentum transfer squared 150<Q^2<15000 GeV^2 using HERA data taken in 1999-2007, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 395 pb^-1. Inclusive jet, 2-jet and 3-jet cross sections, normalised to the neutral current deep-inelastic scattering cross sections, are measured as functions of Q^2, jet transverse momentum and proton momentum fraction. The measurements are well described by perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order corrected for hadronisation effects. The strong coupling as determined from these measurements is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1168 +/-0.0007 (exp.) +0.0046/-0.0030 (th.) +/-0.0016(pdf).

Measurement of open beauty production at HERA
The first observation of open b production in ep collisions is reported. An event sample containing muons and jets has been selected which is enriched in semileptonic b quark decays. The visible cross section σ(ep→bb̄X→μX′)for Q2<1GeV2, 0.1<y<0.8 is measured to be 0.176±0.016(stat.)+0.026−0.017(syst.)nb for the muons to be detected in the range 35°<θμ<130° and p⊥μ>2.0GeV in the laboratory frame. The expected visible cross section based on a NLO QCD calculation is 0.104±0.017nb. The cross sections for electroproduction with Q2<1GeV2 and photoproduction are derived from the data and found to be σ(ep→ebb̄X)=7.1±0.6(stat.)+1.5−1.3(syst.)nb and σ(γp→bb̄X)=111±10(stat.)+23−20(syst.)nb at an average 〈Wγp〉∼180GeV, respectively.

Measurement of meson cross sections at HERA and determination of the gluon density in the proton using NLO QCD
With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D∗ meson production cross sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum transfers Q2 > 3 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around Wγp ≈ 88 GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in the proton, xgg(xg), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range 7.5 × 10−4 < xg < 4 × 10−2 at average scales μ2 = 25 to 50 GeV2. The gluon momentum fraction xg has been obtained from the measured kinematics of the scattered electron and the D∗ meson in the final state. The results compare well with the gluon distribution obtained from the analysis of scaling violations of the proton structure function F2.

Determination of the longitudinal proton structure function FL(x,Q2) at low x
A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off protons at HERA is presented at momentum transfers 8.5 ≤ Q2 ≤ 35 GeV2 and large inelasticity <y> = 0.7, i.e. for the Bjorken-x range 0.00013 ≤ x ≤ 0.00055. Using a next-to-leading order QCD fit to the structure function F2 at lower y values, the contribution of F2 to the measured cross section at high y is calculated and, by subtraction, the longitudinal structure function FL is determined for the first time with an average value of FL = 0.52 ± 0.03 (statt)−0.22+0.25 (syst) at Q2 = 15.4 GeV2 and x = 0.000243.

Measurement of charged particle transverse momentum spectra in deep inelastic scattering
Transverse momentum spectra of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering are measured as a function of the kinematic variables x_B and Q2 using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The data are compared to different parton emission models, either with or without ordering of the emissions in transverse momentum. The data provide evidence for a relatively large amount of parton radiation between the current and the remnant systems.

Measurement of branching ratios and τ polarization from τ→eνν−,τ→μνν−,andτ→π(K)ν decays at LEP
From a sample of 3308 e+e− → τ+τ− events with an estimated background of 1.9%, we find 964 τ → eνν, 903 τ → μνν, and 309 τ → π(K)ν candidates. Efficiency and background estimates determined from both Monte Carlo and control sample studies yield the following branching ratios: B(τ → eνν) = 17.4 ± 0.5 (stat) ± 0.4 (sys)%, B(τ → μνν) = 16.8 ± 0.5 ± 0.4%, and B(τ → π(K)ν) = 12.1 ± 0.7 ± 0.5%. These values are in good agreement with previous measurements. The measured lepton branching ratios, when combined with the world-average measured value for the τ lifetime, yield a ratio of the τ Fermi coupling constant to that of the lighter leptons given by Gτ/Ge,μ = 0.92 ± 0.04, where it is assumed Ge = Gμ ≡ Ge,μ. The average τ polarization at the Z° resonance is measured to be −0.01±0.09 from an analysis of the momentum spectra of the electron, muon, and pion candidates, implying that the ratio of vector to axial vector couplings of the τ to the Z° is ντ/ατ = 0.01 ± 0.04. The measurements of the average polarizations in the forward and backward hemispheres lead to the efficiency-corrected, forward-backward polarization asymmetry AFBpol = −0.22 ± 0.10, implying for the electron couplings to the Z° the ratio νe/αe = 0.15±0.07. Since these values for the tau and electron couplings are consistent with one another, we assume lepton universality to derive ν/α = 0.05 ± 0.04 and a value for the weak mixing angle of sin2θW = 0.237 ± 0.009, with no ambiguity introduced by the relative signs of ν and α.

Diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons at HERA
Results on diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb−1. The energy dependence of the diffractive ψ(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/ψ mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative ψ(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as ebt, yields belψ(2S)=(4.31±0.57±0.46) GeV−2, compatible with that of the J/ψ. For the proton dissociative channel the result bpdψ(2S)=(0.59±0.13±0.12) GeV−2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/ψ. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well.

A search for leptoquarks, leptogluons and excited leptons in H1 at HERA
A direct search for new particles in the H1 experiment at HERA is presented for masses ranging from 35 GeV up to ∼ 250 GeV. The data sample of 24 nb−1 accumulated during the first year of operation was analysed for signatures of scalar and vector leptoquarks, leptogluons, excited electrons and excited neutrinos with flavours of the first generation. No evidence for the production of such particles was found in various possible decay channels. Rejection limits are derived.

Performance of the OPAL jet chamber
The jet chamber of the OPAL experiment at the LEP e+e− collider is designed to measure the direction and the momentum of charged particles as well as the specific energy loss in the chamber gas. The jet chamber has been operated at LEP since August 1989 and has recorded 500 000 hadronic decays of the Z0, resulting in a good understanding of the stability and systematics of the chamber. Resolutions obtained in the measurement of particle direction, momentum, and specific energy loss are presented, as well as the corrections and calibration procedures necessary to attain original design goals. A momentum resolution of 6.8% for particles with a momentum of 45 GeV/c and an energy loss resolution of 3–4% over all momenta have been achieved.

A direct observation of quark-gluon jet differences at LEP
Quark and gluon jets in e+e− three-jet events at LEP are identified using lepton tagging of quark jets, through observation of semi-leptonic charm and bottom quark decays. Events with a symmetry under transposition of the energies and directions of a quark and gluon jet are selected: these quark and gluon jets have essentially the same energy and event environment and as a consequence their properties can be compared directly. The energy of the jets which are studied is about 24.5 GeV. In the cores of the jets, gluon jets are found to yield a softer particle energy spectrum than quark jets. Gluon jets are observed to be broader than quark jets, as seen from the shape of their particle momentum spectra both in and out of the three-jet event plane. The greater width of gluon jets relative to quark jets is also visible from the shapes of their multiplicity distributions. Little difference is observed, however, between the mean value of particle multiplicity for the two jet types.

A study of Bose-Einstein correlations in e+e− annihilations at LEP
Bose-Einstein correlations between like-sign charged track pairs have been studied in e+e− annihilation hadronic events at centre-of-mass energies around the Z0 peak as a function of Q, the four-momentum difference of the pair. The measurement was performed with the OPAL detector at LEP. Assuming the charged tracks to be pions, the observed Bose-Einstein enhancement was used to extract the values of the strength of the effect and the radius of the pion emitting source, which were found to be λ=0.866±0.032±0.140 and R0=0.928±0.019±0.150 fm, respectively, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The results do not show significant variation in comparison to e+e− annihilation measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies. If non-pion track contamination is taken into account, the value of the strength λ becomes consistent with unity.

Measurement of inclusive jet production in deep-inelastic scattering at high and determination of the strong coupling
Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron–proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q2>150GeV2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and of the transverse energy ET of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of αs(MZ) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for αs(MZ)=0.1193±0.0014(exp.)−0.0030+0.0047(th.)±0.0016(pdf).

Jet production in ep collisions at low Q 2 and determination of α s
The production of jets is studied in deep-inelastic e + p scattering at low negative four momentum transfer squared 5<Q 2<100 GeV2 and at inelasticity 0.2<y<0.7 using data recorded by the H1 detector at HERA in the years 1999 and 2000, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 43.5 pb−1. Inclusive jet, 2-jet and 3-jet cross sections as well as the ratio of 3-jet to 2-jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q 2 and jet transverse momentum. The 2-jet cross section is also measured as a function of the proton momentum fraction ξ. The measurements are well described by perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order corrected for hadronisation effects and are subsequently used to extract the strong coupling α s .

Inelastic production of J/ψ mesons in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A measurement is presented of inelastic photo- and electroproduction of J/ψ mesons in ep scattering at HERA. The data were recorded with the H1 detector in the period from 2004 to 2007. Single and double differential cross sections are determined and the helicity distributions of the J/ψ mesons are analysed. The results are compared to theoretical predictions in the colour singlet model and in the framework of non-relativistic QCD. Calculations in the colour singlet model using a k T factorisation ansatz are able to give a good description of the data, while colour singlet model calculations to next-to-leading order in collinear factorisation underestimate the data.

Measurement of D ∗± meson production and determination of $F_{2}^{c\bar{c}}$ at low Q 2 in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive production of D* mesons in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is studied in the range 5 < Q^2 <100 GeV^2 of the photon virtuality and 0.02 < y < 0.7 of the inelasticity of the scattering process. The observed phase space for the D* meson is p_T(D*) > 1.25 GeV and |eta(D*)| < 1.8. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 348 pb^{-1} collected with the H1 detector. Single and double differential cross sections are measured and the charm contribution F_2^{ccbar} to the proton structure function F_2 is determined. The results are compared to perturbative QCD predictions at next-to-leading order implementing different schemes for the charm mass treatment and with Monte Carlo models based on leading order matrix elements with parton showers.

Previous results of inclusive jet cross sections in the range $$150&lt;Q^2 &lt;15{,}000\,\mathrm {GeV}^2 $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>150</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msup><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>15</mml:mn><mml:mo>,</mml:mo><mml:mn>000</mml:mn><mml:mspace /><mml:msup><mml:mrow><mml:mi>GeV</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup></mml:mrow></mml:math> are extended to low transverse jet momenta $$5&lt;P_\mathrm{T}^\mathrm{jet} &lt;7\,\mathrm {GeV} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mrow><mml:mn>5</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msubsup><mml:mi>P</mml:mi><mml:mrow><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:mrow><mml:mi>jet</mml:mi></mml:msubsup><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>7</mml:mn><mml:mspace /><mml:mi>GeV</mml:mi></mml:mrow></mml:math> . The data are compared to predictions from perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, in approximate next-to-next-to-leading order and in full next-to-next-to-leading order. Measurement of elastic electroproduction of mesons at HERA
The elastic electroproduction of φ mesons is studied at HERA with the H1 detector for photon virtualities 1<Q2<15GeV2 and hadronic centre of mass energies 40<W<130 GeV. The Q2 and t dependences of the cross section are extracted (t being the square of the four-momentum transfer to the target proton). When plotted as function of (Q2 + MV2) and scaled by the appropriate SU(5) quark charge factor, the φ meson cross section agrees within errors with the cross sections of the vector mesons V = ρ, ω and J/ψ. A detailed analysis is performed of the φ meson polarisation state and the ratio of the production cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarised φ mesons is determined. A small but significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) is observed.

Transverse energy and forward jet production in the low x regime at HERA
The production of transverse energy in deep inelastic scattering is measured as a function of the kinematic variables $x$ and $Q^2$ using the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA. The results are compared to the different predictions based upon two alternative QCD evolution equations, namely the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (DGLAP) and the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equations. In a pseudorapidity interval which is central in the hadronic centre of mass system between the current and the proton remnant fragmentation region the produced transverse energy increases with decreasing $x$ for constant $Q^2$. Such a behaviour can be explained with a QCD calculation based upon the BFKL ansatz. The rate of forward jets, proposed as a signature for BFKL dynamics, has been measured.

Elastic photoproduction of ϱ0 mesons at HERA
The cross section for the elastic photoproduction of ϱ0 mesons (γp → ϱ0p) has been measured with the H1 detector at HERA for two average photon-proton centre-of-mass energies of 55 and 187 GeV. The lower energy point was measured by observing directly the ϱ0 decay giving a cross section of 9.1 ± 0.9 (stat.) ± 2.5 (syst.) μb. The logarithmic slope parameter of the differential cross section, dσ/dt, is found to be 10.9 ± 2.4 (stat.) ± 1.1 (syst.) GeV−2. The ϱ0 decay polar angular distribution is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The higher energy cross section was determined from analysis of the lower part of the hadronic invariant mass spectrum of diffractive photoproduction and found to be 13.6 ± 0.8 (stat.) ± 2.4 (syst.) μb.

Inclusive production of D + , D 0, D s + and D * + mesonsin deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive production cross sections are measured in deep inelastic scattering at HERA for meson states composed of a charm quark and a light antiquark or the charge conjugate.The measurements cover the kinematic region of photon virtuality 2 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 , inelasticity 0.05 < y < 0.7, D meson transverse momenta p t (D) ≥ 2.5 GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D)| ≤ 1.5.The identification of the D-meson decays and the reduction of the combinatorial background profit from the reconstruction of displaced secondary vertices by means of the H1 silicon vertex detector.The production of charmed mesons containing the light quarks u, d and s is found to be compatible with a description in which the hard scattering is followed by a factorisable and universal hadronisation process.

Dijet cross sections and parton densities in diffractive DIS at HERA
Differential dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 51.5 pb-1. The selected events are of the type ep --> eXY, where the system X contains at least two jets and is well separated in rapidity from the low mass proton dissociation system Y. The dijet data are compared with QCD predictions at next-to-leading order based on diffractive parton distribution functions previously extracted from measurements of inclusive diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. The prediction describes the dijet data well at low and intermediate zpom (the fraction of the momentum of the diffractive exchange carried by the parton entering the hard interaction) where the gluon density is well determined from the inclusive diffractive data, supporting QCD factorisation. A new set of diffractive parton distribution functions is obtained through a simultaneous fit to the diffractive inclusive and dijet cross sections. This allows for a precise determination of both the diffractive quark and gluon distributions in the range 0.05<zpom<0.9. In particular, the precision on the gluon density at high momentum fractions is improved compared to previous extractions.

Search for first generation leptoquarks in ep collisions at HERA
A search for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks produced in ep collisions is performed by the H1 experiment at HERA. The full H1 data sample is used in the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 446 pb^-1. No evidence for the production of leptoquarks is observed in final states with a large transverse momentum electron or with large missing transverse momentum, and constraints on leptoquark models are derived. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength lambda=0.3, first generation leptoquarks with masses up to 800 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Diffractive dijet production with a leading proton in ep collisions at HERA
The cross section of the diffractive process e + p → e + Xp is measured at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV, where the system X contains at least two jets and the leading final state proton p is detected in the H1 Very Forward Proton Spectrometer. The measurement is performed in photoproduction with photon virtualities Q 2 < 2 GeV2 and in deep-inelastic scattering with 4 GeV2 < Q 2 < 80 GeV2. The results are compared to next- to-leading order QCD calculations based on diffractive parton distribution functions as extracted from measurements of inclusive cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering.

Determination of the strong coupling constant $${\varvec{{\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z})}}}$$ in next-to-next-to-leading order QCD using H1 jet cross section measurements
The strong coupling constant αs is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic ep scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of αs(mZ) at the Z-boson mass mZ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be αs(mZ)=0.1157(20)exp(29)th . Complementary, αs(mZ) is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value αs(mZ)=0.1142(28)tot obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations.

Elastic electroproduction of ϱ and mesons at large Q2 at HERA
The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of P and Jψ mesons for Q2 > 8 GeV2 and 〈W〉 ⋍ 90 GeV/c2 are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron-proton luminosity of ⋍3 pb−1. The dependences of the total virtual photon-proton (γ∗p) cross sections on Q2, W and the momentum transfer squared to the proton (t), and, for the ϱ, the dependence on the polar decay angle (cos θ∗ are presented. The Jψ : ∂ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

Photoproduction of mesons in electron-proton collisions at HERA
At the electron-proton collider HERA the inclusive D∗± meson photoproduction cross section has been measured with the H1 detector in two different, but partly overlapping, kinematical regions. For the first, where 〈Wγp〉 ≈ 200 GeV and Q2 < 0.01 GeV2, the result is σ(γp → ccX) = (13.2 ± 2.2−1.7 −4.8+2.1 +9.9) μb. The second measurement for Q2 < 4 GeV2 yields σ(γp → ccX) = (9.3 ± 2.1−1.8 −3.2+1.9 +6.9) μb at 〈Wγp〉 ≈ 142 GeV and σ(γp → ccX) = (20.6 ± 5.5−3.9 −7.2+4.3 +15.4 μb at 〈Wγp〉 ≈ 230 GeV, respectively. The third error accounts for an additional uncertainty due to the proton and photon parton density parametrizations. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of the D∗± transverse momentum and rapidity. The results compare reasonably well with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Evidence for diffractive photoproduction of charm quarks is presented.

The gluon density of the proton at low x from a QCD analysis of F2
We present a QCD analysis of the proton structure function F2 measured by the H1 experiment at HERA, combined with data from previous fixed target experiments. The gluon density is extracted from the scaling violations of F2 in the range 2 · 10−4 < x < 3 · 10−2 and compared with an approximate solution of the QCD evolution equations. The gluon density is found to rise steeply with decreasing x.

Measurement of beauty production at HERA using events with muons and jets
A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data.

Diffractive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons with large momentum transfer at HERA
The diffractive photoproduction of J/psi mesons is measured with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb^-1. The differential cross section d sigma(gamma p -> J/psi Y) / d t is studied in the range 2 < |t| < 30 GeV^2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W in three t intervals, spanning the range 50 < W < 200 GeV. A fast rise of the cross section with W is observed for each t range and the slope for the effective linear Pomeron trajectory is measured to be alpha^\prime= -0.0135 \pm 0.0074 (stat.) \pm 0.0051 (syst.) GeV^-2. The measurements are compared with perturbative QCD models based on BFKL and DGLAP evolution. The data are found to be compatible with s-channel helicity conservation.

A search for scalar leptoquarks in Z0 decays
A search for scalar leptoquarks has been performed with data from the OPAL detector at the e+e− storage ring LEP. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.3 pb−1 no evidence for leptoquark production was observed where the leptoquark decays into a quark and either a charged lepton (e, μ, τ) or a neutrino. An upper limit of 1.7 pb on the production cross section for leptoquarks is obtainedassuming a branching ratio of 50% for the decay of the leptoquark into the channels with a charged lepton. Lower limits on the leptoquark mass between 41.4 and 46.4 GeV/c2 at 95% CL are obtained, depending on the effecte SU(2) × U(1) invariant couplings assigned to the leptoquark.

Search for single top quark production in ep collisions at HERA
A search for single top quark production is performed in e^\pm p collisions at HERA. The search exploits data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 118.3 pb^-1. A model for the anomalous production of top quarks in a flavour changing neutral current process involving a t-u-gamma coupling is investigated. Decays of top quarks into a b quark and a W boson are considered in the leptonic and the hadronic decay channels of the W. Both a cut-based analysis and a multivariate likelihood analysis are performed to discriminate anomalous top quark production from Standard Model background processes. In the leptonic channel, 5 events are found while 1.31 \pm 0.22 events are expected from the Standard Model background. In the hadronic channel, no excess above the expectation for Standard Model processes is found. These observations lead to a cross section \sigma (ep -> e t X) = 0.29 +0.15 -0.14 pb at \sqrt{s} = 319 GeV. Alternatively, assuming that the observed events are due to a statistical fluctuation, upper limits of 0.55 pb on the anomalous top production cross section and of 0.27 on the t-u-gamma coupling \kappa_{t-u-gamma} are established at the 95% confidence level.

Diffractive open charm production in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of diffractive open charm production at HERA. The event topology is given by ep→eXY where the system X contains at least one charmed hadron and is well separated by a large rapidity gap from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y. Two analysis techniques are used for the cross section measurements. In the first, the charm quark is tagged by the reconstruction of a D*±(2010) meson. This technique is used in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction (γp). In the second, a method based on the displacement of tracks from the primary vertex is used to measure the open charm contribution to the inclusive diffractive cross section in DIS. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton density functions previously obtained from a QCD analysis of the inclusive diffractive cross section at H1. A good agreement is observed in the full kinematic regime, which supports the validity of QCD factorization for open charm production in diffractive DIS and γp.

A general search for new phenomena at HERA
A model--independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed using the full $e^\pm p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. All event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with transverse momenta above 20 GeV are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A dedicated algorithm is used to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or the invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. Variables related to angular distributions and energy sharing between final state particles are also introduced to study the final state topologies. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed in the phase space covered by this analysis.

Search for single top quark production at HERA
A search for single top quark production is performed in the full e±p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 474 pb−1. Decays of top quarks into a b quark and a W boson with subsequent leptonic or hadronic decay of the W are investigated. A multivariate analysis is performed to discriminate top quark production from Standard Model background processes. An upper limit on the top quark production cross section via flavour changing neutral current processes σ(ep→etX)<0.25pb is established at 95% CL. Limits on the anomalous coupling κtuγ are derived.

Diffractive dijet photoproduction in ep collisions at HERA
Measurements are presented of single and double-differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 47 pb^-1. The events are of the type ep -> eXY, where the hadronic system X contains at least two jets and is separated by a large rapidity gap from the system Y, which consists of a leading proton or low-mass proton excitation. The dijet cross sections are compared with QCD calculations at next-to-leading order and with a Monte Carlo model based on leading order matrix elements with parton showers. The measured cross sections are smaller than those obtained from the next-to-leading order calculations by a factor of about 0.6. This suppression factor has no significant dependence on the fraction x_gamma of the photon four-momentum entering the hard subprocess. Ratios of the diffractive to the inclusive dijet cross sections are measured for the first time and are compared with Monte Carlo models.

The inclusive production of D∗±(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic e±p scattering is measured in the kinematic region of photon virtuality 100<Q2<1000GeV2 and inelasticity 0.02<y<0.7. Single and double differential cross sections for inclusive D∗ meson production are measured in the visible range defined by |η(D∗)|<1.5 and pT(D∗)>1.5GeV. The data were collected by the H1 experiment during the period from 2004 to 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 351pb−1. The charm contribution, F2cc¯, to the proton structure function F2 is determined. The measurements are compared with QCD predictions.

Inclusive measurement of diffractive deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The diffractive process ep \rightarrow eXY, where Y denotes a proton or its low mass excitation with MY < 1.6 GeV, is studied with the H1 experiment at HERA. The analysis is restricted to the phase space region of the photon virtuality 3 \leq Q2 \leq 1600 GeV2, the square of the four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex |t| < 1.0 GeV2 and the longitudinal momentum fraction of the incident proton carried by the colourless exchange xIP < 0.05. Triple differential cross sections are measured as a function of xIP, Q2 and beta = x/xIP where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. These measurements are made after selecting diffractive events by demanding a large empty rapidity interval separating the final state hadronic systems X and Y . High statistics measurements covering the data taking periods 1999-2000 and 2004-2007 are combined with previously published results in order to provide a single set of diffractive cross sections from the H1 experiment using the large rapidity gap selection method. The combined data represent a factor between three and thirty increase in statistics with respect to the previously published results. The measurements are compared with predictions from NLO QCD calculations based on diffractive parton densities and from a dipole model. The proton vertex factorisation hypothesis is tested.

Measurement of dijet production in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering with a leading proton at HERA
The cross section of diffractive deep-inelastic scattering ep \rightarrow eXp is measured, where the system X contains at least two jets and the leading final state proton is detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The measurement is performed for fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss xIP < 0.1 and covers the range 0.1 < |t| < 0.7 GeV2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 4 < Q2 < 110 GeV2 in photon virtuality. The differential cross sections extrapolated to |t| < 1 GeV2 are in agreement with next-toleading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton distribution functions extracted from measurements of inclusive and dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic scattering. The data are also compared with leading order Monte Carlo models.

Inclusive parton cross sections in photoproduction and photon structure
Photoproduction of 2-jet events is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. Parton cross sections are extracted from the data by an unfolding method using leading order parton-jet correlations of a QCD generator. The gluon distribution in the photon is derived in the fractional momentum range 0.04 ⩽ xγ ⩽ 1 at the average factorization scale 75 GeV2.

First measurement of the charged current cross section at HERA

Photoproduction of mesons at HERA
We present a study of Jψ meson production in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons, performed with the H1-detector at the HERA collider at DESY. The Jψ mesons are detected via their leptonic decays both to electrons and muons. Requiring exactly two particles in the detector, a cross section of σ(ep → JψX) = (8.8±2.0±2.2) nb is determined for 30 GeV ≤ Wγp ≤ 180 GeV and Q2 ≲ 4 GeV2. Using the flux of quasi-real photons with Q2 ≲ 4 GeV2, a total production cross section of σ(γp → J/ψX) = (56±13±14) nb is derived at an average Wγp=90 GeV. The distribution of the squared momentum transfer t from the proton to the Jψ can be fitted using an exponential exp(−b∥t∥) below a ∥t∥ of 0.75 GeV2 yielding a slope parameter of b = (4.7±1.9) GeV−2.

A search for leptoquarks at HERA
A search for leptoquarks at HERA was performed in H1 using 1994 e+ p data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 3 pb−1. Single leptoquarks were searched for in direct positron-quark fusion processes taking into account possible decays into lepton-quark pairs of either the first, the second, or the third generation. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various final states studied and mass dependent exclusion limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings of the leptoquarks. Compared with earlier results from an analysis of e− p data, exclusion limits are considerably improved for leptoquarks which could be produced via e+ -valence quark fusion. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour conserving couplings, masses up to 275 GeV (depending on the leptoquark type) are excluded for coupling values larger than 4πλem. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour violating couplings, masses up to 225 GeV are excluded for couplings with leptons of the second or third generation larger than 4πλem. Fourteen possible combinations of couplings are studied and stringent exclusion limits comparable or better than any existing direct or indirect limits are obtained for each leptoquark type.

A study of Ks0 production in Z0 decays
The production of K0 mesons in e+e− interactions at center of mass energies in the region of the Z0 mass has been investigated with the OPAL detector at LEP. The rate is found to be 2.10±0.02±0.14 K0, Z0 per hadronic event. The predictions from the JETSET and HERWIG generators agree very well with both the rate and the scale invariant cross section (1/σhadβ) (dσ/dxE) for K0 production. Comparisons of the inclusive momentum spectrum with predictions of an analytical QCD formula and with data from lower center of mass energies are presented.

A general search for new phenomena in ep scattering at HERA
A model-independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed in e+p and e−p collisions at HERA using H1 data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117pb−1. For the first time all event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with high transverse momenta are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A statistical algorithm is developed to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. A good agreement with the Standard Model prediction is observed in most of the event classes. The most significant deviation is found for a topology containing an isolated muon, missing transverse momentum and a jet, consistent with a previously reported observation.

Isolated electrons and muons in events with missing transverse momentum at HERA
A search for events with a high-energy isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum has been performed at the electron–proton collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 13.6 pb−1 in e−p scattering and 104.7 pb−1 in e+p scattering. Within the Standard Model such events are expected to be mainly due to W boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. In e−p interactions one event is observed in the electron channel and none in the muon channel, consistent with the expectation of the Standard Model. In the e+p data a total of 18 events are seen in the electron and muon channels compared to an expectation of 12.4±1.7 dominated by W production (9.4±1.6). Whilst the overall observed number of events is broadly in agreement with the number predicted by the Standard Model, there is an excess of events with transverse momentum of the hadronic system greater than 25 GeV with 10 events found compared to 2.9±0.5 expected. The results are used to determine the cross-section for events with an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum.

Study of charm fragmentation into D * ± mesons in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The process of charm quark fragmentation is studied using D * ± meson production in deep-inelastic scattering as measured by the H1 detector at HERA. The parameters of fragmentation functions are extracted for QCD models based on leading order matrix elements and DGLAP or CCFM evolution of partons together with string fragmentation and particle decays. Additionally, they are determined for a next-to-leading order QCD calculation in the fixed flavour number scheme using the independent fragmentation of charm quarks to D * ± mesons. Two different regions of phase space are investigated defined by the presence or absence of a jet containing the D * ± meson in the event. The fragmentation parameters extracted for the two phase space regions are found to be different.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions
Abstract The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. The different sets of PDFs are presented, evaluated and compared. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

Search for compositeness, leptoquarks and large extra dimensions in eq contact interactions at HERA
The reaction e+p→e+X is studied with the H1 detector at Hera. The data cover momentum transfers Q2 between 200GeV2 and 30000GeV2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.6pb−1. The differential cross section dσ/dQ2 is compared to the Standard Model expectation for neutral current scattering and analysed to search for (ēe)(q̄q) contact interactions. No evidence for new phenomena is observed. The results are used to set limits on scales within models of electron–quark compositeness, quark form factors and the exchange of virtual heavy leptoquarks. A search for gravitational effects mediated through the exchange of virtual gravitons which propagate into large extra dimensions is presented.

Charged particle multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Using the H1 detector at HERA, charged particle multiplicity distributions in deep inelastice + p scattering have been measured over a large kinematical region. The evolution withW andQ 2 of the multiplicity distribution and of the multiplicity moments in pseudorapidity domains of varying size is studied in the current fragmentation region of the hadronic centre-of-mass frame. The results are compared with data from fixed target lepton-nucleon interactions,e + e − annihilations and hadron-hadron collisions as well as with expectations from QCD based parton models. Fits to the Negative Binomial and Lognormal distributions are presented.

Decay mode independent search for a light Higgs boson and new scalars
Using data from e+e− collisions collected with the OPAL detector during the 1990 LEP run, a search was mode for a low mass Higgs boson (H0) with arbitrary decay mode. The existence of a minimal standard model H0 with mass in the range 0 ⩽ mH ⩽ 11.3 GeV/c2 is excluded at the 95% confidence level for all possible decay modes of the H0. Limits on the production of Higgs bosons predicted by the minimal supersymmetric standard model and new scalar particles that couple to the Z0 are presented as a function of the scalar mass.

Search for leptoquark bosons in ep collisions at HERA
A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e+p and e−p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117pb−1. No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state electron or with large missing transverse momentum. Constraints on leptoquark models are established. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength, leptoquarks with masses up to 275–325GeV are ruled out at 95% confidence level. These limits improve and supercede earlier H1 limits based on subsamples of the data used here.

Inclusive dijet production at low Bjorken-x in deep inelastic scattering
Dijet production in deep inelastic ep scattering is investigated in the region of low values of the Bjorken-variable x (10 -4 < x < 10 -2 ) and low photon virtualities Q 2 (5 < Q 2 < 100 GeV 2 ).The measured dijet cross sections are compared with perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order.For most dijet variables studied, these calculations can provide a reasonable description of the data over the full phase space region covered, including the region of very low x.However, large discrepancies are observed for events with small separation in azimuth between the two highest transverse momentum jets.This region of phase space is described better by predictions based on the CCFM evolution equation, which incorporates k t factorized unintegrated parton distributions.A reasonable description is also obtained using the Color Dipole Model or models incorporating virtual photon structure.

Inclusive D*± meson and associated dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive D*± production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA with the H1 detector. In addition, the production of dijets in events with a D*± meson is investigated. The analysis covers values of photon virtuality 2 ≤ Q2 ≤ 100 GeV2 and of inelasticity 0.05≤y≤0.7. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and x and of various D*± meson and jet observables. Within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties all measured cross sections are found to be adequately described by next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, based on the photon–gluon fusion process and DGLAP evolution, without the need for an additional resolved component of the photon beyond what is included at NLO. A reasonable description of the data is also achieved by a prediction based on the CCFM evolution of partons involving the kT-unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton.

Measurement of charm and beauty jets in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Measurements of cross sections for events with charm and beauty jets in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented. Events with jets of transverse energy $E_{T}^{\mathrm{jet}}>6$ GeV and pseudorapidity −1.0<η jet<1.5 in the laboratory frame are selected in the kinematic region of photon virtuality Q 2>6 GeV2 and inelasticity variable 0.07<y<0.625. Measurements are also made requiring a jet in the Breit frame with $E_{T}^{*{\mathrm{jet}}}>6$ GeV. The data were collected with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 189 pb−1. The numbers of charm and beauty jets are determined using variables reconstructed using the H1 vertex detector with which the impact parameters of the tracks to the primary vertex and the position of secondary vertices are measured. The measurements are compared with QCD predictions and with previous measurements where heavy flavours are identified using muons.

Search for contact interactions in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo>±</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math> collisions at HERA
A search for physics beyond the Standard Model in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at high negative four-momentum transfer squared Q2 is performed in e±p collisions at HERA. The differential cross section dσ/dQ2, measured using the full H1 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 446pb−1, is compared to the Standard Model prediction. No significant deviation is observed. Limits on various models predicting new phenomena at high Q2 are derived. For general four-fermion eeqq contact interaction models, lower limits on the compositeness scale Λ are set in the range 3.6 TeV to 7.2 TeV. Leptoquarks with masses MLQ and couplings λ are constrained to MLQ/λ>0.41–1.86TeV and limits on squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetric models are derived. A lower limit on the gravitational scale in 4+n dimensions of MS>0.9TeV is established for low-scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions. For the light quark radius an upper bound of Rq<0.65⋅10−18m is determined.

Determination of the integrated luminosity at HERA using elastic QED Compton events
A measurement of the integrated luminosity at the ep collider HERA is presented, exploiting the elastic QED Compton process ep \rightarrow ep. The electron and the photon are detected in the backward calorimeter of the H1 experiment. The integrated luminosity of the data recorded in 2003 to 2007 is determined with a precision of 2.3%. The measurement is found to be compatible with the corresponding result obtained using the Bethe-Heitler process.

Measurement of dijet production in diffractive deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A measurement is presented of single- and double-differential dijet cross sections in diffractive deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA using data collected by the H1 experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 290 pb−1. The investigated phase space is spanned by the photon virtuality in the range of 4 < Q 2 < 100 GeV2 and by the fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss x ℙ < 0.03. The resulting cross sections are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton distribution functions and the value of the strong coupling constant is extracted.

Exclusive $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 meson photoproduction with a leading neutron at HERA
A first measurement is presented of exclusive photoproduction of $$\rho ^0$$ mesons associated with leading neutrons at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=319$$ GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.16 pb $$^{-1}$$ . The $$\rho ^0$$ mesons with transverse momenta $$p_T<1$$ GeV are reconstructed from their decays to charged pions, while leading neutrons carrying a large fraction of the incoming proton momentum, $$x_L>0.35$$ , are detected in the Forward Neutron Calorimeter. The phase space of the measurement is defined by the photon virtuality $$Q^2 < 2$$ GeV $$^2$$ , the total energy of the photon–proton system $$20 < W_{\gamma p}< 100$$ GeV and the polar angle of the leading neutron $$\theta _n < 0.75$$ mrad. The cross section of the reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ is measured as a function of several variables. The data are interpreted in terms of a double peripheral process, involving pion exchange at the proton vertex followed by elastic photoproduction of a $$\rho ^0$$ meson on the virtual pion. In the framework of one-pion-exchange dominance the elastic cross section of photon-pion scattering, $$\sigma ^\mathrm{el}(\gamma \pi ^+ \rightarrow \rho ^0\pi ^+)$$ , is extracted. The value of this cross section indicates significant absorptive corrections for the exclusive reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ .

Observation and differential cross section measurement of neutral current DIS events with an empty hemisphere in the Breit frame
The Breit frame provides a natural frame to analyze lepton-proton scattering events. In this reference frame, the parton model hard interactions between a quark and an exchanged boson defines the coordinate system such that the struck quark is back-scattered along the virtual photon momentum direction. In Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), higher order perturbative or non-perturbative effects can change this picture drastically. As Bjorken-$x$ decreases below one half, a rather peculiar event signature is predicted with increasing probability, where no radiation is present in one of the two Breit-frame hemispheres and all emissions are to be found in the other hemisphere. At higher orders in $\alpha_s$ or in the presence of soft QCD effects, predictions of the rate of these events are far from trivial, and that motivates measurements with real data. We report on the first observation of the empty current hemisphere events in electron-proton collisions at the HERA collider using data recorded with the H1 detector at a center-of-mass energy of 319 GeV. The fraction of inclusive neutral-current DIS events with an empty hemisphere is found to be $0.0112 \pm 3.9\,\%_\text{stat} \pm 4.5\,\%_\text{syst} \pm 1.6\,\%_\text{mod}$ in the selected kinematic region of $150< Q^2<1500$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $0.14< y<0.7$. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb$^{-1}$, sufficient to enable differential cross section measurements of these events. The results show an enhanced discriminating power at lower Bjorken-$x$ among different Monte Carlo event generator predictions.

Measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA
The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA
The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Monte Carlo model calculations and analytic calculations based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory are compared to the measurements.

Forward jet and particle production at HERA
Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Predictions based on the DGLAP approach fail to describe the data, except for those which allow for a resolved photon contribution.

Observation of hard processes in rapidity gap events in γp interactions at HERA
Events with no hadronic energy flow in a large interval of pseudo-rapidity in the proton direction are observed in photon-proton interactions at an average centre of mass energy 〈√sγp〉 of 200 GeV These events are interpreted as photon diffractive dissociation. Evidence for hard scattering in photon diffractive dissociation is demonstrated using inclusive single particle spectra, thrust as a function of transverse energy, and the observation of jet production. The data can be described by a Monte Carlo calculation including hard photon-pomeron scattering.
