Combination of measurements of inclusive deep inelastic $${e^{\pm }p}$$ e ± p scattering cross sections and QCD analysis of HERA data
A combination is presented of all inclusive deep inelastic cross sections previously published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations at HERA for neutral and charged current $$e^{\pm }p$$ scattering for zero beam polarisation. The data were taken at proton beam energies of 920, 820, 575 and 460 GeV and an electron beam energy of 27.5 GeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb $$^{-1}$$ and span six orders of magnitude in negative four-momentum-transfer squared, $$Q^2$$ , and Bjorken x. The correlations of the systematic uncertainties were evaluated and taken into account for the combination. The combined cross sections were input to QCD analyses at leading order, next-to-leading order and at next-to-next-to-leading order, providing a new set of parton distribution functions, called HERAPDF2.0. In addition to the experimental uncertainties, model and parameterisation uncertainties were assessed for these parton distribution functions. Variants of HERAPDF2.0 with an alternative gluon parameterisation, HERAPDF2.0AG, and using fixed-flavour-number schemes, HERAPDF2.0FF, are presented. The analysis was extended by including HERA data on charm and jet production, resulting in the variant HERAPDF2.0Jets. The inclusion of jet-production cross sections made a simultaneous determination of these parton distributions and the strong coupling constant possible, resulting in $$\alpha _s(M_Z^2)=0.1183 \pm 0.0009 \mathrm{(exp)} \pm 0.0005\mathrm{(model/parameterisation)} \pm 0.0012\mathrm{(hadronisation)} ^{+0.0037}_{-0.0030}\mathrm{(scale)}$$ . An extraction of $$xF_3^{\gamma Z}$$ and results on electroweak unification and scaling violations are also presented.

A study of the general characteristics of proton-antiproton collisions at √s=0.2 to 0.9 TeV
The general characteristics of inelastic proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider are studied with the UA1 detector using magnetic and calorimetric analysis. Results are presented on charged particle multiplicities and transverse and longitudinal momenta, and on total transverse energy distributions at centre of mass energies ranging from 0.2 to 0.9 TeV.

A study of quasi-elastic muon neutrino and antineutrino scattering in the NOMAD experiment
We have studied the muon neutrino and antineutrino quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering reactions (ν μ n→μ − p and $\bar{\nu }_{\mu}p\to\mu^{+}n$ ) using a set of experimental data collected by the NOMAD Collaboration. We have performed measurements of the cross-section of these processes on a nuclear target (mainly carbon) normalizing it to the total ν μ ( $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ ) charged-current cross section. The results for the flux-averaged QEL cross sections in the (anti)neutrino energy interval 3–100 GeV are $\langle \sigma_{\mathrm{qel}}\rangle_{\nu_{\mu}}=(0.92\pm0.02(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.06(\mathrm{syst}))\times10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$ and $\langle\sigma_{\mathrm{qel}}\rangle_{\bar{\nu}_{\mu}}=(0.81\pm0.05(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.09(\mathrm{syst}))\times10^{-38}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$ for neutrino and antineutrino, respectively. The axial mass parameter M A was extracted from the measured quasi-elastic neutrino cross section. The corresponding result is M A =1.05±0.02(stat)±0.06(syst) GeV. It is consistent with the axial mass values recalculated from the antineutrino cross section and extracted from the pure Q 2 shape analysis of the high purity sample of ν μ quasi-elastic 2-track events, but has smaller systematic error and should be quoted as the main result of this work. Our measured M A is found to be in good agreement with the world average value obtained in previous deuterium filled bubble chamber experiments. The NOMAD measurement of M A is lower than those recently published by K2K and MiniBooNE Collaborations. However, within the large errors quoted by these experiments on M A , these results are compatible with the more precise NOMAD value.

Search for oscillations at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We report on a search for B0↔B¯0 oscillations (mixing) using events with two identified muons from data collected at the CERN p¯p collider. In the absence of B0↔B¯0 oscillations, dimuons coming directly from decays of beauty-antibeauty paris must have opposite signs. Like-sign dimuons are expected from events where one muon arises from beauty decay and the other from the charm decay of the associated beauty-charm cascade. Taking these processes into account, together with the contribution from charm production, the predicted ratio of like-sign to unlike-sign muon pairs is 0.26±0.03. Experimentally we measure 0.42±0.07±0.03. A natural explanation for the excess of like-sign events is the existence of a significant amount of B0↔B¯0 transitions. The fraction of beauty particles that produce first-generation decay muons with the opposite electric charge from that expected without mixing is deduced to be: χ = 0.121±0.047. Combined with the null result from searches for B0↔B¯0 oscillations at e+e− colliders, our results are consistent with transitions inthe B0s system, as favoured theoretically.

Search for νμ→νe oscillations in the NOMAD experiment
We present the results of a search for νμ→νe oscillations in the NOMAD experiment at CERN. The experiment looked for the appearance of νe in a predominantly νμ wide-band neutrino beam at the CERN SPS. No evidence for oscillations was found. The 90% confidence limits obtained are Δm2<0.4 eV2 for maximal mixing and sin2(2θ)<1.4×10−3 for large Δm2. This result excludes the LSND allowed region of oscillation parameters with Δm2≳10 eV2.

Evidence for a narrow baryonic state decaying to K0Sp and K0Sp̄ in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A resonance search has been made in the K0Sp and K0Sp̄ invariant-mass spectrum measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb−1. The search was performed in the central rapidity region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 300–318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, above 1 GeV2. Recent results from fixed-target experiments give evidence for a narrow baryon resonance decaying to K+n and K0Sp, interpreted as a pentaquark. The results presented here support the existence of such state, with a mass of 1521.5±1.5(stat.)+2.8−1.7(syst.) MeV and a Gaussian width consistent with the experimental resolution of 2 MeV. The signal is visible at high Q2 and, for Q2>20 GeV2, contains 221±48 events. The probability of a similar signal anywhere in the range 1500–1560 MeV arising from fluctuations of the background is below 6×10−5.

Exclusive electroproduction of J/ψ mesons at HERA
The exclusive electroproduction of J/psi mesons, ep->epJ/psi, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for virtualities of the exchanged photon in the ranges 0.15<Q^2<0.8 GeV^2 and 2<Q^2<100 GeV^2 using integrated luminosities of 69 pb^-1 and 83 pb^-1, respectively.The photon-proton centre-of-mass energy was in the range 30<W<220 GeV and the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex |t|<1.The cross sections and decay angular distributions are presented as functions of Q^2, W and t. The effective parameters of the Pomeron trajectory are in agreement with those found in J/psi photoproduction. The spin-density matrix elements, calculated from the decay angular distributions, are consistent with the hypothesis of s-channel helicity conservation. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse cross sections, sigma_L/sigma_T, grows with Q^2, whilst no dependence on W or t is observed. The results are in agreement with perturbative QCD calculations and exhibit a strong sensitivity to the gluon distribution in the proton.

Production of low transverse energy clusters in collisions at √s=0.2–0.9 TeV and their interpretation in terms of QCD jets
The production of transverse energy clusters in minimum bias proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN SPS Collider is studied with the UA1 detector over a new range of centre of mass energies (√s = 0.2−0.9 TeV). This study is intended to investigate how low in transverse momentum perturbative QCD is able to describe the dynamics of hadron collisions. We observe that clusters with transverse energy in excess of a few GeV exhibit properties in agreement with QCD expectations for parton scattering, supporting their interpretation in terms of jet production. We find that the jet-event rate represents a sizeable fraction of the inelastic rate and is increasing with √s over the measured energy range.

The NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS
The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμ − ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The ντ's are searched for through their charged current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting τ− through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction and individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe Ks0's, Λ0's and π0's. Finally, the observation of τ− through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed.

Studies of intermediate vector boson production and decay in UA1 at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
An extensive study of production and decay properties of charged and neutral Intermediate Vector Bosons (IVB) at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is presented. Intermediate Vector Bosons were detected in the electron, muon, and tau decay modes at centre-of-mass energies of 0.546 and 0.630 TeV. This paper is a summary, based on all the available data from the UA1 experiment from the running periods 1982–1985. Results are presented and compared with expectations of the Standard Eletroweak Model and QCD-improved Drell-Yan annihilation processes. The general conclusion is that there is an excellent agreement between the predictions of the Standard Model and our measurements.

Events with large missing transverse energy at the CERN collider: III. Mass limits on supersymmetric particles
A sample of events with large missing transverse energy from 715 nb−1 of data from the UA1 experiment at the CERN proton-antiproton collider is used to search for evidence of supersymmetric particle production. Assuming that the photino is the lightest supersymmetric particle and that it is massless, we find a limit on the squark mass of mq>45 GeV/c2 at 90% CL, independently of the gluino mass. Similarly, we find a limit on the gluino mass of mg>53 GeV/c2 (at 90% CL) independently of the squark mass, provided that the gluino is not long-lived (i.e. provided that the squark is not too heavy, mq⪅1 TeV/c2). For equal squark and gluino masses we find a limit mq=mg>75 GeV/c2 at 90% CL. The effect of a non-zero photino mass on these limits is studied.

Beauty production at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We report evidence for beauty particle production through the observation of dimuon events from proton-antiproton collisions at energies of √s=546 GeV and √s=630 GeV at the CERN collider. Our data indicate that semi-leptonic decays of beauty particles are the dominant source of pairs of high-pT muons. The beauty flavour creation (gg or q¯q→b¯b) cross-section needed to explain the dimuon rate is σ{p¯p→b¯b+X, pbT5 GeV/c, |η|<2.0}=(1.1±0.1±0.4) μb, which is in good agreement with QCD calculations. We also observe clear signals for ϒ→μ+μ− (hidden beauty) and high-pT J/ψ→μ+μ−, well above the backgraound of continuum muon pairs from the Drell-Yan mechanism.

Beauty production at the CERN pp̄ collider
We report measurements of b-quark and B-hadron production in pp̄ collisions at √s=630 GeV. We use muon samples to extract beauty production cross-sections over a wide range of transverse momentum in the central rapidity range |y| < 1.5. We compare our results to an O(αs3) QCD prediction and find good agreement over the measured b-quark transverse momentum range 6 GeV/c to 54 GeV/c. Using the shape of the pT and y distribution predicted by QCD to extrapolate our data, we infer a total cross-section for b-quark production at √s=630GeV ofσ(pp̄→bb̄+X)=19.3±7(exp.)±9(th.μb.

Impact of heavy-flavour production cross sections measured by the LHCb experiment on parton distribution functions at low x
The impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering and in $pp$ collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis in the fixed-flavour number scheme at next-to-leading order. Differential cross sections of charm- and beauty-hadron production measured by LHCb are used together with inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The heavy-flavour data of the LHCb experiment impose additional constraints on the gluon and the sea-quark distributions at low partonic fractions $x$ of the proton momentum, down to $x \sim 5 \times 10^{-6}$. This kinematic range is currently not covered by other experimental data in perturbative QCD fits.

Combination and QCD analysis of charm and beauty production cross-section measurements in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Measurements of open charm and beauty production cross sections in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA from the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations are combined. Reduced cross sections are obtained in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared of the photon $$2.5~\hbox {GeV}^2\le Q^2 \le 2000\, \hbox {GeV}^2$$ and Bjorken scaling variable $$3 \cdot 10^{-5} \le x_\mathrm{Bj} \le 5 \cdot 10^{-2}$$ . The combination method accounts for the correlations of the statistical and systematic uncertainties among the different datasets. Perturbative QCD calculations are compared to the combined data. A next-to-leading order QCD analysis is performed using these data together with the combined inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections from HERA. The running charm- and beauty-quark masses are determined as $$m_c(m_c) = 1.290^{+0.046}_{-0.041} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.062}_{-0.014} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.003}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}$$ GeV and $$m_b(m_b) = 4.049^{+0.104}_{-0.109} \mathrm{(exp/fit)}$$ $${}^{+0.090}_{-0.032} \mathrm{(model)}$$ $${}^{+0.001}_{-0.031} \mathrm{(parameterisation)}~\mathrm{GeV}$$ .

Reinterpretation of LHC Results for New Physics: Status and recommendations after Run 2
We report on the status of efforts to improve the reinterpretation of searches and measurements at the LHC in terms of models for new physics, in the context of the LHC Reinterpretation Forum. We detail current experimental offerings in direct searches for new particles, measurements, technical implementations and Open Data, and provide a set of recommendations for further improving the presentation of LHC results in order to better enable reinterpretation in the future. We also provide a brief description of existing software reinterpretation frameworks and recent global analyses of new physics that make use of the current data.

Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos
We report on a search for heavy neutrinos ($\nus$) produced in the decay $D_s\to τ\nus$ at the SPS proton target followed by the decay $\nudecay$ in the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if $\nus$ is a component of $ν_τ$.\ From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with $4.1\times10^{19}$ protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the $\nus$ mass range from 10 to 190 $\rm MeV$. Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an interpretation of the time anomaly observed in the KARMEN1 detector.\

Final NOMAD results on νμ→ντ and νe→ντ oscillations including a new search for ντ appearance using hadronic τ decays
Results from the ντ appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic τ decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to oscillations. The “blind analysis” of all topologies yields no evidence for an oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90% CL allowed region in the sin22θμτ–Δm2 plane which includes sin22θμτ<3.3×10−4 at large Δm2 and Δm2< 0.7 eV2/c4 at sin22θμτ=1. The corresponding contour in the νe→ντ oscillation hypothesis results in sin22θeτ<1.5×10−2 at large Δm2 and Δm2<5.9 eV2/c4 at sin22θeτ=1. We also derive limits on effective couplings of the τ lepton to νμ or νe.

Search for new heavy quarks at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We report on a search for new heavy quarks using data collected by the UA1 experiment during 1983, 1984 and 1985 at the CERN proton-antiproton collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 700 nb−1. Studying events with a muon or an isolated electron, accompanied by one or more jets, we find good agreement between our data and Monte Carlo predictions for the production of charm and beauty, without the need for a new quark. A top quark model, involving the decayW→t $$\bar b$$ and directt $$\bar t$$ production via the strong interaction, is used to determine our detection efficiency for top. This allows us to place an upper limit on the cross section for producing top quarks as a function of the top quark mass. Our analysis is not sensitive to theW→t $$\bar b$$ process alone. By comparing our limit with a calculation of thet $$\bar t$$ cross section, added to theW→t $$\bar b$$ cross section derived from our own measurements ofW →lv, we are able to place a lower limit on the mass of the top quark. From the lowest order (α 2 ) calculation, using the choice of structure functions andQ 2 scale that give the lowest cross section, we find: $$m_{top} > 44GeV/c^2 \left( {95\% c.l.} \right).$$ Including an estimate of the next higher order (α 2 ) and calculating the cross section with the EUROJET QCD Monte Carlo program using a less extreme choice for the structure functions andQ 2 scale gives: $$m_{top} > 56GeV/c^2 \left( {95\% c.l.} \right).$$ A search has also been made for a fourth generation, charge 1/3 quark (b'). Assuming that theb' mass is smaller than that of the top quark and that it can-not be produced inW decays, the mass limits, using the above procedures, are respectivelym b' >32 GeV/c2 andm b' >44 GeV/c2, both at 95% confidence level.

Exclusive electroproduction of ϕ mesons at HERA
Exclusive electroproduction of ϕ mesons has been studied in e±p collisions at s=318GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 65.1pb−1. The γ∗p cross section is presented in the kinematic range 2GeV2<Q2<70GeV2, 35GeV<W<145GeV and |t|<0.6GeV2. The cross sections as functions of Q2, W, t and helicity angle θh are compared to cross sections for other vector mesons. The ratios R of the cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarized virtual photons are presented as functions of Q2 and W. The data are also compared to predictions from theoretical models.

Exclusive photoproduction of ϒ mesons at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reaction gamma p --> Upsilon p has been studied with the ZEUS experiment in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb^{-1}. The measurement covers the kinematic range 60<W<220 GeV and Q^2<1 GeV^2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and Q^2 is the photon virtuality. These results, which represent the analysis of the full ZEUS data sample for this channel, are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD.

A precise measurement of the muon neutrino–nucleon inclusive charged current cross section off an isoscalar target in the energy range <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:mn>2.5</mml:mn><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:msub><mml:mi>E</mml:mi><mml:mi>ν</mml:mi></mml:msub><mml:mo>&lt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>40</mml:mn><mml:mtext> GeV</mml:mtext></mml:math> by NOMAD
We present a measurement of the muon neutrino–nucleon inclusive charged current cross section, off an isoscalar target, in the neutrino energy range 2.5⩽Eν⩽40GeV. The significance of this measurement is its precision, ±4% in 2.5⩽Eν⩽10GeV, and ±2.6% in 10⩽Eν⩽40GeV regions, where significant uncertainties in previous experiments still exist, and its importance to the current and proposed long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

Measurement of the bottom quark production cross section in proton-antiproton collisions at √s = 0.63 TeV
We summarize the results obtained in the UA1 experiment on the production of bottom quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at √s=0.63 TeV. Independent muon data samples are used to determine the bottom quark production cross section in different transverse momentum ranges from 6 to 30 GeV. A recent theoretical calculation to O(αs3) of the inclusive bottom quark transverse momentum spectrum in hadronic collisions shows reasonable agreement with the data. We extrapolate the integral PT distribution to PT=0 and in rapidity to estimate the total cross section forthe production of bottom quark pairs. Assuming the shape in PT and rapidity given by the O(αs3) calcultaion, we obtain σ(pp→bb+X) = 10.2 ±3.3 μb.

Events with large missing transverse energy at the cern collider: II. search for the decays of W± into heavy leptons and of Z0 into non-interacting particles
We report on further analysis of events with large missing transverse energy from 715 nb−1 of data from the UA1 experiment at the CERN proton-antiproton collider. Measured W and Z0 rates and heavy flavour cross sections are used to predict rates of missing transverse energy event from all known standard model process. Limits are derived on two possible new sources, namely: (1) semi-hadronic decays of a fourth sequential charged heavy lepton coupling to the W boson, (2) Z0 decays into additional pairs of non-interacting particles. After taking into additional pairs of non-interacting particles. After taking into account all known sources of missing transverse energy events, we find a mass limit on a fourth-generation charged lepton of mL>41 GeV/c2 (90% CL) and a limit on the number of additional neutrino species of n⩽7 (90% CL).

Intermediate vector boson cross sections at the CERN super proton synchrotron collider and the number of neutrino types
We present updated results from the UA1 experiment on cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for intermediate vector bosons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.630 TeV. We find that σ·B(W→lβn)=0.63±0.04±0.10nb and σ·B(Z0→l+l−=0.071±0.011nb where l denotes an average of electron and muon channels. An average over all data (electron and muon channels at 0.546 and 0.630 TeV) gives a ratio of R≡σ·(W→lν)/σ·B(Z0→l+l−) = 9.1+1.7−1.2. Using current theoretical predictions for this quantity, limits are extracted on the number of light neutrino types. Combining UA1 and UA2 data and imposing the bound Nν⩾3 we find that Nν⩽5.9 at 90% CL. Constraints on the mass of the top quark are also discussed.

Measurement of the longitudinal proton structure function at HERA
The reduced cross sections for ep deep inelastic scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different centre-of-mass energies, 318, 251 and 225 GeV. From the cross sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken x and the virtuality, Q^2, the proton structure functions FL and F2 have been extracted in the region 5*10^-4 < x <0.007 and 20 < Q^2 < 130 GeV^2.

Measurement of D ± and D 0 production in deep inelastic scattering using a lifetime tag at HERA
The production of D ±- and D 0-mesons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133.6 pb−1. The measurements cover the kinematic range 5<Q 2<1000 GeV2, 0.02<y<0.7, 1.5<p T <15 GeV and |η D |<1.6. Combinatorial background to the D-meson signals is reduced by using the ZEUS microvertex detector to reconstruct displaced secondary vertices. Production cross sections are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD, which is found to describe the data well. Measurements are extrapolated to the full kinematic phase space in order to obtain the open-charm contribution, $F_{2}^{c\bar{c}}$ , to the proton structure function, F 2.

A precision measurement of charm dimuon production in neutrino interactions from the NOMAD experiment
We present our new measurement of the cross-section for charm dimuon production in neutrino–iron interactions based upon the full statistics collected by the NOMAD experiment. After background subtraction we observe 15 344 charm dimuon events, providing the largest sample currently available. The analysis exploits the large inclusive charged current sample – about 9×106 events after all analysis cuts – and the high resolution NOMAD detector to constrain the total systematic uncertainty on the ratio of charm dimuon to inclusive Charged Current (CC) cross-sections to ∼2%. We also perform a fit to the NOMAD data to extract the charm production parameters and the strange quark sea content of the nucleon within the NLO QCD approximation. We obtain a value of mc(mc)=1.159±0.075 GeV/c2 for the running mass of the charm quark in the MS¯ scheme and a strange quark sea suppression factor of κs=0.591±0.019 at Q2=20 GeV2/c2.

Prompt neutrino fluxes in the atmosphere with PROSA parton distribution functions
Effects on atmospheric prompt neutrino fluxes of present uncertainties affecting the nucleon composition are studied by using the PROSA fit to parton distribution functions (PDFs). The PROSA fit extends the precision of the PDFs to low x, which is the kinematic region of relevance for high-energy neutrino production, by taking into account LHCb data on charm and bottom hadroproduction. In the range of neutrino energies explored by present Very Large Volume Neutrino Telescopes, it is found that PDF uncertainties are far smaller with respect to those due to renormalization and factorization scale variation and to assumptions on the cosmic ray composition, which at present dominate and limit our knowledge of prompt neutrino fluxes. A discussion is presented on how these uncertainties affect the expected number of atmospheric prompt neutrino events in the analysis of high-energy events characterized by interaction vertices fully contained within the instrumented volume of the detector, performed by the IceCube collaboration.

Improved constraints on parton distributions using LHCb, ALICE and HERA heavy-flavour measurements and implications for the predictions for prompt atmospheric-neutrino fluxes
The impact of measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic ep scattering and in pp collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis at next-to-leading order. Recent combined results of inclusive and heavy-flavour produc- tion cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA are investigated together with heavy-flavour production measurements at the LHC. Differential cross sections of charm- and beauty-hadron production measured by the LHCb collaboration at the centre-of-mass energies of 5, 7 and 13 TeV as well as the recent measurements of the ALICE experiment at the centre-of-mass energies of 5 and 7 TeV are explored. These data impose additional constraints on the gluon and the sea-quark distributions at low partonic fractions x of the proton momentum, down to x ≈ 10−6. The impact of the resulting parton distribution function in the predictions for the prompt atmospheric-neutrino fluxes is studied.

First observation of the beauty baryon Λb in the decay channel Λb→J/ψΛ at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We report on the first observation of the beauty baryon Λb in an exclusive decay channel at the CERN pp collider. Using 4.7 pb−1 of muon data collected in the 1988/89 collider runs we reconstruct 16±5 Λb's in the decay mode Λb→JψΛ above a background of 9±1 events, corresponding to a significance of about five standard deviations. We measure the Λb mass to be mΛb=5640±50±30 MeV/c2. Using the beauty cross-section measured by UA1 we deduce for the product of the production fraction and branching ratio fΛb Br (Λb→JψΛ)=(1.8±1.0)×10-10. Our sample contains three-muon event in which the beauty particle opposite to the Λb is tagged by the third muon. We also observe an indication of a signal in the decay channel B0→JψK0∗ with a significance of three standard deviations.

Study of deep inelastic inclusive and diffractive scattering with the ZEUS forward plug calorimeter
Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep→e′γ∗p→e′XN, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 4.2pb−1. The measurement covers a wide range in the γ∗p c.m. energy W (37–245 GeV), photon virtuality Q2 (2.2–80 GeV2) and mass MX (0.28–35 GeV). The diffractive cross section for MX>2GeV rises strongly with W; the rise is steeper with increasing Q2. The latter observation excludes the description of diffractive deep inelastic scattering in terms of the exchange of a single pomeron. The ratio of diffractive to total cross section is constant as a function of W, in contradiction to the expectation of Regge phenomenology combined with a naive extension of the optical theorem to γ∗p scattering. Above MX of 8 GeV, the ratio is flat with Q2, indicating a leading-twist behaviour of the diffractive cross section. The data are also presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, F2D(3)(β,xP,Q2), of the proton. For fixed β, the Q2 dependence of xPF2D(3) changes with xP in violation of Regge factorisation. For fixed xP, xPF2D(3) rises as β→0, the rise accelerating with increasing Q2. These positive scaling violations suggest substantial contributions of perturbative effects in the diffractive DIS cross section.

Measurement of the polarization in charged current interactions in the NOMAD experiment
The Λ polarization in νμ charged current interactions has been measured in the NOMAD experiment. The event sample (8087 reconstructed Λ 's) is more than an order of magnitude larger than that of previous bubble chamber experiments, while the quality of event reconstruction is comparable. We observe negative polarization along the W -boson direction which is enhanced in the target fragmentation region: Px(xF<0)=−0.21±0.04(stat)±0.02(sys) . In the current fragmentation region we find Px(xF>0)=−0.09±0.06(stat)±0.03(sys) . These results provide a test of different models describing the nucleon spin composition and the spin transfer mechanisms. A significant transverse polarization (in the direction orthogonal to the Λ production plane) has been observed for the first time in a neutrino experiment: Py=−0.22±0.03(stat)±0.01(sys) . The dependence of the absolute value of Py on the Λ transverse momentum with respect to the hadronic jet direction is in qualitative agreement with the results from unpolarized hadron–hadron experiments.

Intermittency studies in p collisions at
A significant intermittency signal is observed in 630 GeV pp collisions measured in the UA1 central detector. It occurs with similar magnitude in different variables: pseudorapidity, rapidity and azimuthal angle. The signal increases with decreasing charged particle multiplicity in the event. Its strength in a sample of low p⊥ tracks and its multiplicity dependence are not reproduced by commonly used Monte Carlo models of high energy interactions.

Direct photon production at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
Isolated photons, produced directly by a scattering process, have been observed in the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp collider at centre-of-mass energies √=546 GeV and √=630 GeV. Single and double photon differential cross sections have been determined and found to be consistent with the expectations of QCD.

Measurement of isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering
Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320pb^-1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E_T < 15 GeV and -0.7 < eta < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q^2, in the range 10 < Q^2 < 350 GeV and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W_X> 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q^2, x, E_T and eta. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range.

Search for single-top production in ep collisions at HERA
A search for single-top production, ep→etX, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb−1. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions involving a neutral electroweak vector boson, γ or Z. The result was combined with a previous ZEUS result yielding a total luminosity of 0.50 fb−1. A 95% credibility level upper limit of 0.13 pb was obtained for the cross section at the centre-of-mass energy of s=315 GeV.

Inclusive-jet photoproduction at HERA and determination of
Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep→e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2<1 GeV2 and γp centre-of-mass energies in the region 142<Wγp<293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb−1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, ηjet, for jets with ETjet>17 GeV and −1<ηjet<2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of ηjet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high ηjet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(αs2) terms. Values of αs(MZ) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of αs(MZ) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is αs(MZ)=0.1206−0.0022+0.0023(exp.)−0.0035+0.0042(th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.

J/ψ and ψ′ production at the CERN p̄p collider
We have measured the production cross-section times branching ratio for J/ψ→μ+μ− in pp̄ interactions at √s = 630 GeV in the kinematic range |y|<2.0 and pT>5 GeV/c, BR(J/ψ→μ+μ−)σ(pp̄→J/ψ)=6.18±0.24±0.81 nb. The data sample collected in 1988 and 1989 for an integrated luminosity of 4.7 pb−1 represents a fivefold improvement over the statistics in our earlier study of the J/ψ production process, and the pT distribution which is measured extends to 28 GeV/c. Using event topology we show that the rate for the direct production of J/ψ, via radiative decays of χ states, is larger than that for production via B-hadrons. Production of ψ′ is also studied using the decay modes <ψ′→μ+μ− and ψ′→J/ψπ+ψ−.

A search for rare B meson decays at the CERN Spp̄S collider
We report on a search for the decays B0→ μ+μ−, B→ μ+ μ−X and Bd0 → μ+ μ−K0∗, which are expected to be rare if mediated by flavor changing neutral currents. Using data collected during the 1984–1989 CERN pp̄ Collider runs, the UA1 search was carried out using μ+ μ− events with 3.9<Mμμ < 5.5 GeV/c2. We find 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching for BR → μ+μ− of 8.3 × 10−6, for B → μ+μ−X of 5.0 × 10−5, and for B0d→μ+μ−K0∗ of of 2.3 × 10−5. Implicatitions for upper limits on the t-quark mass are discussed.

Bose-Einstein correlations in pp interactions at √s=0.2 to 0.9 TeV
Bose-Einstein correlations have been measured at the SPS collider at centre-of-mass energies from √s=0.2 to 0.9 TeV. The size and the incoherence parameter of the particle emitting region have been determined as a function of charged particle density in pseudorapidity Δn/Δη, centre-of-mass energy and the direction of emission of the charged particles. For fixed values of Δn/Δη the size of the interaction region and the incoherence parameter remain constant with rising √s. At fixed √s, the size of the interaction region increases with rising charged particle density while the incoherence parameter decreases.

Two-jet mass distributions at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
Two-jet mass distributions have been measured as a function of centre-of-mass scattering angle for high-mass jet pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 630 GeV. The agreement between QCD expectations and the experimental measurements has been used to place limits on the production cross section of an object X decaying into two jets. In particular we consider the existence of a massive colour octet of vector gauge bosons (axigluons). We exclude axigluons with a width ΛA < 0.4mA and a mass mA in the range 150 < mA < 310 GeV/c2 (95% CL).

Diffractive photoproduction of dijets in ep collisions at HERA
Diffractive photoproduction of dijets was measured with the ZEUS detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 77.2 pb-1. The measurements were made in the kinematic range Q2 < 1 GeV2, 0.20<y<0.85 and xIP<0.025, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, y is the inelasticity and xIP is the fraction of the proton momentum taken by the diffractive exchange. The two jets with the highest transverse energy, ET jet, were required to satisfy ET jet>7.5 and 6.5 GeV, respectively, and to lie in the pseudorapidity range -1.5<ηjet<1.5. Differential cross sections were compared to perturbative QCD calculations using available parameterisations of diffractive parton distributions of the proton.

Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass
The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q 2 < 1000 GeV2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb−1. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q 2, Bjorken x, jet trans- verse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q 2. The running beauty-quark mass, m b at the scale m b , was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be m b (m b ) = 4.07 ± 0.14 (fit) − 0.07 + 0.01 (mod.) − 0.00 + 0.05 (param.) − 0.05 + 0.08 (theo.) GeV.

Deep inelastic cross-section measurements at large<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><mml:mi>y</mml:mi></mml:math>with the ZEUS detector at HERA
The reduced cross sections for $e^{+}p$ deep inelastic scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different centre-of-mass energies, $318$, $251$ and $225$ GeV. The cross sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken $x$ and the virtuality, $Q^2$, were obtained in the region $0.13\ \leq\ y\ \leq\ 0.75$, where $y$ denotes the inelasticity and $5\ \leq\ Q^2\ \leq\ 110$ GeV$^2$. The proton structure functions $F_2$ and $F_L$ were extracted from the measured cross sections.

A search for ν→ν oscillations using the NOMAD detector
NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of ντ charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, a limit of sin22θμτ<4.2×10−3 is obtained for large Δm2 at the 90% confidence level.

Prediction of neutrino fluxes in the NOMAD experiment
The method developed for the calculation of the flux and composition of the West Area Neutrino Beam used by NOMAD in its search for neutrino oscillations is described. The calculation is based on particle production rates computed using a recent version of FLUKA and modified to take into account the cross-sections measured by the SPY and NA20 experiments. These particles are propagated through the beam line taking into account the material and magnetic fields they traverse. The neutrinos produced through their decays are tracked to the NOMAD detector. The fluxes of the four neutrino flavours at NOMAD are predicted with an uncertainty of about 8% for νμ and νe, 10% for ν̄μ, and 12% for ν̄e. The energy-dependent uncertainty achieved on the νe/νμ prediction needed for a νμ→νe oscillation search ranges from 4% to 7%, whereas the overall normalization uncertainty on this ratio is 4.2%.

Production of W's with large transverse momentum at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We have measured the W transverse momentum distribution (pTW) using a sample of 323 W → eν and W → μν events produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the CERN collider. In the present letter we extend the study of the distribution up to pTW ∼- m W and compare to leading and higher order QCD. This comparison is a precise test of QCD with hadron colliders and the inclusive spectrum gives good agreement over a large range of pTW. However we observed two events at very large pTW (∼- 100 GeV/c) in which the W candidate recoils against an energetic di-jet system. Both events have a very large missing transverse energy and a jet-jet mass compatible with the W mass. In a separate analysis, a topologically similar event has been observed in which a high-mass di-jet system is balanced by a large missing transverse energy which could be interpreted as Z0 → νν decay. We cannot easily explain these three events in terms of explicit second-order QCD calculations. However we cannot exclude at this stage the possibility that they are the result of non-gaussian fluctuations in the response of UA1 calorimetry or a statistical fluctuation in the data.

Low mass Dimuon production at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We present a study of low mass dimuon events [m(μμ) < 6 GeV/c2] from the UA1 experiment at the CERN pp collider. Contributions from semileptonic decays of heavy flavour particles, Drell-Yan type processes, J/ψ decays and leptonic decays of light mesons are extracted, and cross sections for high pT beauty and Drell-Yan production are derived. A limit for the branching fraction for the exotic decay B0→μ+μ− is also obtained. The cross section for section for low mass, high pT Drell-Yan prod uction is compared to the measured direct photon cross section using QED and QCD derived relationship. This relationship is used to infer a measurement of the single photon cross section at lower values of transverse momentum, where photons cannot be unambigously identified.

High transverse momentum J/ψ production at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
We have studied high transverse momentum J/ψ production in pp interactions at s=630 GeV. The measured cross section times branching fraction for J/ψ→μ+μ− production with pT⩾5 GeV/c and |y|<2.0 is 7.5±0.7±1.2 nb. The event topology is used to establish that there is J/ψ production from both the direct production of cc bound states and the decay of B hadrons. The inferred yield of J/ψ from beauty decays is compatible with our estimates of beauty production in other channels.

Measurement of high-Q 2 neutral current deep inelastic e − p scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised electron beam at HERA
Measurements of the neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e^- p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised electron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections dsigma/dQ^2, dsigma/dx and dsigma/dy and the double-differential cross sections in Q^2 and x are measured in the kinematic region y < 0.9 and Q^2 > 185 GeV^2 for both positively and negatively polarised electron beams and for each polarisation state separately. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 169.9 pb^-1 taken with the ZEUS detector in 2005 and 2006 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions xF_3 and xF_3^{\gamma Z} are determined by combining the e^- p results presented in this paper with previously measured e^+ p neutral current data. The asymmetry parameter A^- is used to demonstrate the parity violating effects of electroweak interactions at large spacelike photon virtuality. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of charged current deep inelastic scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised electron beam at HERA
Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e − p collisions with longitudinally polarised electron beams are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 175 pb−1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The double-differential cross-section d 2 σ/dxdQ 2 is presented in the kinematic range 280<Q 2<30 000 GeV2 and 0.015<x<0.65. The measured cross sections are compared with the predictions of the Standard Model.

The reduced cross-section $\tilde{\sigma}$ is presented in the kinematic range 200<Q 2<60 000 GeV2 and 0.006<x<0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson.

Two-particle azimuthal correlations as a probe of collective behaviour in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
Two-particle azimuthal correlations have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering with virtuality Q2> 5 GeV2 at a centre-of-mass energy $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 318 GeV recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The correlations of charged particles have been measured in the range of laboratory pseudorapidity −1.5 < η < 2.0 and transverse momentum 0.1 < pT< 5.0 GeV and event multiplicities Nch up to six times larger than the average 〈Nch〉 ≈ 5. The two-particle correlations have been measured in terms of the angular observables cn{2} = 〈〈cosnΔφ〉〉, where n is between 1 and 4 and ∆φ is the relative azimuthal angle between the two particles. Comparisons with available models of deep inelastic scattering, which are tuned to reproduce inclusive particle production, suggest that the measured two-particle correlations are dominated by contributions from multijet production. The correlations observed here do not indicate the kind of collective behaviour recently observed at the highest RHIC and LHC energies in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions.

Neutrino production of opposite sign dimuons in the NOMAD experiment
The NOMAD Collaboration presents a study of opposite sign dimuon events in the framework of Leading Order QCD. A total of 2714 neutrino- and 115 antineutrino-induced opposite sign dimuon events with Eμ1,Eμ2>4.5 GeV, 15<Eν<300 GeV and Q2>1(GeV/c)2 are observed in the Front-Calorimeter of NOMAD during the 1995 and 1996 runs. The analysis yields a value for the charm quark mass of mc=1.3+0.3+0.3−0.3−0.3GeV/c2 and for the average semileptonic branching ratio of Bc=0.095+0.007+0.014−0.007−0.013. The ratio of the strange to non-strange sea in the nucleon is measured to be κ=0.48+0.09+0.17−0.07−0.12. The measured rate of charm-induced dimuon relative to single muon, as a function of neutrino energy, is consistent with the slow rescaling hypothesis of heavy quark production.

Measurement of beauty production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
The beauty production cross section for deep inelastic scattering events with at least one hard jet in the Breit frame together with a muon has been measured, for photon virtualities Q^2 > 2 GeV^2, with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosity of 72 pb^-1. The total visible cross section is sigma_b-bbar (ep -> e jet mu X) = 40.9 +- 5.7 (stat.) +6.0 -4.4 (syst.) pb. The next-to-leading order QCD prediction lies about 2.5 standard deviations below the data. The differential cross sections are in general consistent with the NLO QCD predictions; however at low values of Q^2, Bjorken x, and muon transverse momentum, and high values of jet transverse energy and muon pseudorapidity, the prediction is about two standard deviations below the data.

Measurement of the ratio R≡σWBr(W→μν)/σzBr(Z→μμ) and ΓWtot at the CERN proton-antiproton collider
An analysis of W and Z boson production at UA1, using 4.66 pb−1 of data from the 1988 and 1989 CERN pp Collider runs at s=0.63 TeV, yields R≡σWBr(W→μv)/σzBr(Z→μμ)=10.4−1.5+1.8stat.±0.8(syst.) We find R=9.5−1.0+1.1(stat.+syst.) when combining all available UA1 data, in both the electron and muon channel, taken in the period 1983–1989. In the framework of the standard model, the value of R is used to infer the total width of the W boson, ΓWtot=2.18−0.24+0.26 (exp.)±0.04(theory) GeV/c2.

Forward jet production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
The production of forward jets has been measured in deep inelastic ep collisions at HERA.The results are presented in terms of single differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken scaling variable (x Bj ) and as triple differential cross sections d 3 σ/dx Bj dQ 2 dp 2 t,jet , where Q 2 is the four momentum transfer squared and p 2 t,jet is the squared transverse momentum of the forward jet.Also cross sections for events with a di-jet system in addition to the forward jet are measured as a function of the rapidity separation between the forward jet and the two additional jets.The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD calculations and with the predictions of various QCD-based models.

Leading neutron energy and distributions in deep inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
The production of energetic neutrons in $ep$ collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The neutron energy and $p_T^2$ distributions were measured with a forward neutron calorimeter and tracker in a $40 \pb^{-1}$ sample of inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data and a $6 \pb^{-1}$ sample of photoproduction data. The neutron yield in photoproduction is suppressed relative to DIS for the lower neutron energies and the neutrons have a steeper $p_T^2$ distribution, consistent with the expectation from absorption models. The distributions are compared to HERA measurements of leading protons. The neutron energy and transverse-momentum distributions in DIS are compared to Monte Carlo simulations and to the predictions of particle exchange models. Models of pion exchange incorporating absorption and additional secondary meson exchanges give a good description of the data.

A measurement of coherent neutral pion production in neutrino neutral current interactions in the NOMAD experiment
We present a study of exclusive neutral pion production in neutrino-nucleus Neutral Current interactions using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS. The data correspond to $1.44 \times 10^6$ muon-neutrino Charged Current interactions in the energy range $2.5 \leq E_{\nu} \leq 300$ GeV. Neutrino events with only one visible $\pi^0$ in the final state are expected to result from two Neutral Current processes: coherent $\pi^0$ production, {\boldmath $\nu + {\cal A} \to \nu + {\cal A} + \pi^0$} and single $\pi^0$ production in neutrino-nucleon scattering. The signature of coherent $\pi^0$ production is an emergent $\pi^0$ almost collinear with the incident neutrino while $\pi^0$'s produced in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering have larger transverse momenta. In this analysis all relevant backgrounds to the coherent $\pi^0$ production signal are measured using data themselves. Having determined the backgrounds, and using the Rein-Sehgal model for the coherent $\pi^0$ production to compute the detection efficiency, we obtain {\boldmath $4630 \pm 522 (stat) \pm 426 (syst)$} corrected coherent-$\pi^0$ events with $E_{\pi^0} \geq 0.5$ GeV. We measure {\boldmath $\sigma (\nu {\cal A} \to \nu {\cal A} \pi^0) = [ 72.6 \pm 8.1(stat) \pm 6.9(syst) ] \times 10^{-40} cm^2/nucleus$}. This is the most precise measurement of the coherent $\pi^0$ production to date.

Production of excited charm and charm-strange mesons at HERA
The production of excited charm, D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0, and charm-strange, D_{s1}(2536)^+-, mesons in ep collisions was measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 126 pb^-1. Masses, widths and helicity parameters were determined. The measured yields were converted to the rates of c quarks hadronising as a given excited charm meson and to the ratios of the dominant D_2^*(2460)^0 and D_{s1}(2536)^+- branching fractions. A search for the radially excited charm meson, D^{*'}(2640)^+-, was also performed. The results are compared with those measured previously and with theoretical expectations.

Inclusive-jet cross sections in NC DIS at HERA and a comparison of the <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msub><mml:mi>k</mml:mi><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:math>, anti-<mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si2.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msub><mml:mi>k</mml:mi><mml:mi>T</mml:mi></mml:msub></mml:math> and SIScone jet algorithms
For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q2>125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb−1 and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the kT algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(αs3) terms. Values of αs(MZ) were extracted from the data; the results are compatible with and have similar precision to the value extracted from the kT analysis.

A search for single photon events in neutrino interactions
We present a search for neutrino induced events containing a single, exclusive photon using data from the NOMAD experiment at the CERN SPS where the average energy of the neutrino flux is ≃25GeV. The search is motivated by an excess of electron-like events in the 200–475 MeV energy region as reported by the MiniBooNE experiment. In NOMAD, photons are identified via their conversion to e+e− in an active target embedded in a magnetic field. The background to the single photon signal is dominated by the asymmetric decay of neutral pions produced either in a coherent neutrino–nucleus interaction, or in a neutrino–nucleon neutral current deep inelastic scattering, or in an interaction occurring outside the fiducial volume. All three backgrounds are determined in situ using control data samples prior to opening the 'signal-box'. In the signal region, we observe 155 events with a predicted background of 129.2±8.5±3.3. We interpret this as null evidence for excess of single photon events, and set a limit. Assuming that the hypothetical single photon has a momentum distribution similar to that of a photon from the coherent π0 decay, the measurement yields an upper limit on single photon events, <4.0×10−4 per νμ charged current event. Narrowing the search to events where the photon is approximately collinear with the incident neutrino, we observe 78 events with a predicted background of 76.6±4.9±1.9 yielding a more stringent upper limit, <1.6×10−4 per νμ charged current event.

Search for first-generation leptoquarks at HERA
A search for first-generation leptoquarks was performed in electron-proton and positron-proton collisions recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA in 2003-2007 using an integrated luminosity of 366 pb^-1. Final states with an electron and jets or with missing transverse momentum and jets were analysed, searching for resonances or other deviations from the Standard Model predictions. No evidence for any leptoquark signal was found. The data were combined with data previously taken at HERA, resulting in a total integrated luminosity of 498 pb^-1. Limits on the Yukawa coupling, lambda, of leptoquarks were set as a function of the leptoquark mass for different leptoquark types within the Buchmueller-Rueckl-Wyler model. Leptoquarks with a coupling lambda=0.3 are excluded for masses up to 699 GeV.

Charm, beauty and top at HERA
Results on open charm and beauty production and on the search for top production in high-energy electron–proton collisions at HERA are reviewed. This includes a discussion of relevant theoretical aspects, a summary of the available measurements and measurement techniques, and their impact on improved understanding of QCD and its parameters, such as parton density functions and charm- and beauty-quark masses. The impact of these results on measurements at the LHC and elsewhere is also addressed.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions
Abstract The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

A novel phenomenological approach to total charm cross section measurements at the LHC
Measuring the total charm cross section is important for the comparison to theoretical predictions of the highest precision available for charm today, which are completely known up to NNLO QCD for the total inclusive cross sections. These are also independent of charm fragmentation, while practical measurements of charm hadrons in a fiducial phase space are not. Recently the LHC experiments have reported non-universality of charm fragmentation, which shows that e.g. charm baryon-to-meson ratios are not universal in different collision systems, and that the related production fractions also depend on transverse momentum. This breaks the charm fragmentation universality that was assumed until recently for the extrapolation of experimental measurements to the full total charm cross section phase space. A proposal is made how to address this non-universality in a data driven way without the need to implement any particular non-universal fragmentation model. As a practical example, this method is applied to the extrapolation of published LHC measurements of $D^0$ production at $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV to the corresponding total charm cross section, which fully accounts for charm fragmentation non-universality for the first time. The result, $8.43 ^{+1.05}_{-1.16}(\text{total})$ mb, differs substantially from the one assuming charm fragmentation universality, but still compares well to theoretical QCD predictions up to NNLO.

Deep inelastic inclusive and diffractive scattering at <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>Q</mml:mi><mml:mn>2</mml:mn></mml:msup></mml:math> values from 25 to 320 GeV2 with the ZEUS forward plug calorimeter
Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, $ep \to e^{\prime}\gamma^* p \to e^{\prime}XN$, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 52.4 pb$^{-1}$. The $M_X$ method has been used to extract the diffractive contribution. A wide range in the centre-of-mass energy $W$ (37 -- 245 GeV), photon virtuality $Q^2$ (20 -- 450 GeV$^2$) and mass $M_X$ (0.28 -- 35 GeV) is covered. The diffractive cross section for $2 < M_X < 15$ GeV rises strongly with $W$, the rise becoming steeper as $Q^2$ increases. The data are also presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, $F^{\rm D(3)}_2$, of the proton. For fixed $Q^2$ and fixed $M_X$, $\xpom F^{\rm D(3)}_2$ shows a strong rise as $\xpom \to 0$, where $\xpom$ is the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the Pomeron. For Bjorken-$x < 1 \cdot 10^{-3}$, $\xpom F^{\rm D(3)}_2$ shows positive $\log Q^2$ scaling violations, while for $x \ge 5 \cdot 10^{-3}$ negative scaling violations are observed. The diffractive structure function is compatible with being leading twist. The data show that Regge factorisation is broken.

Running of the charm-quark mass from HERA deep-inelastic scattering data
Combined HERA data on charm production in deep-inelastic scattering have previously been used to determine the charm-quark running mass mc(mc) in the MS‾ renormalisation scheme. Here, the same data are used as a function of the photon virtuality Q2 to evaluate the charm-quark running mass at different scales to one-loop order, in the context of a next-to-leading order QCD analysis. The scale dependence of the mass is found to be consistent with QCD expectations.

Soft sensor for in-line quality control of turning processes based on non-destructive testing techniques and advanced data fusion
Abstract This study describes the systematic process of training, testing, and validating a soft sensor designed for quality control of a turning process on components made of AISI 4140 steel. The soft sensor allows product quality to be predicted and unfavorable surface conditions to be identified, in particular the appearance of a phenomenon known as “White Layer”, often characterized in the case of AISI 4140 steel by an ultra-fine-grained microstructure (UFG). Basis of the soft sensor is a data fusion supported by non-destructive testing techniques (NDT), particularly micromagnetic methods (3MA). A critical part of this work is to address challenges such as lift-off compensation and in-process detection using 3MA. The application of machine-learning techniques, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and regression analysis, is detailed. These techniques result in robust models capable of detecting the occurrence of the White Layer phenomenon while minimizing the influence of measurement setup variations and process disturbances. In addition, the study demonstrates the integration of NDT into the machining process which drives the soft sensor and allows suitable adjustments of the process parameters. The data-driven soft sensor approach demonstrates a possible In-Line control system and discusses different control theories and their respective advantages and disadvantages. This system can effectively set targeted surface conditions in real time during the turning process.

Search for a new gauge boson in π0 decays
A search was made for a new light gauge boson X which might be produced in π0→γ+X decay from neutral pions generated by 450 GeV protons in the CERN SPS neutrino target. The X's would penetrate the downstream shielding and be observed in the NOMAD detector via the Primakoff effect, in the process of X→π0 conversion in the external Coulomb field of a nucleus. With 1.45×1018 protons on target, 20 candidate events with energy between 8 and 140 GeV were found from the analysis of neutrino data. This number is in agreement with the expectation of 18.1±2.8 background events from standard neutrino processes. A new 90 %C.L. upper limit on the branching ratio Br(π0→γ+X)< (3.3 to 1.9)×10−5 for X masses ranging from 0 to 120 MeV/c2 is obtained.

A more sensitive search for νμ→ντ oscillations in NOMAD
With additional data and improved algorithms, we have enhanced the sensitivity of our appearance search for νμ→ντ oscillations in the NOMAD detector in the CERN-SPS wide-band neutrino beam. The search uses kinematic criteria to identify ντ charged current interactions followed by decay of the τ− to one of several decay modes. Our “blind” analyses of deep-inelastic scattering data taken in 1996 and 1997, combined with consistent reanalyses of previously reported 1995 data, yield no oscillation signal. For the two-family oscillation scenario, we present the contour outlining a 90% C.L. confidence region in the sin22θμτ–Δm2 plane. At large Δm2, the confidence region includes sin22θμτ<1.2×10−3 (a limit 3.5 times more stringent than in our previous publication), while at sin22θμτ=1, the confidence region includes Δm2<1.2 eV2/c4.

Measurement of the polarization in νμ charged current interactions in the NOMAD experiment
We present a measurement of the polarization of Λ̄ hyperons produced in νμ charged current interactions. The full data sample from the NOMAD experiment has been analyzed using the same V0 identification procedure and analysis method reported in a previous paper [NOMAD Collaboration, Nucl. Phys. B 588 (2000) 3] for the case of Λ hyperons. The Λ̄ polarization has been measured for the first time in a neutrino experiment. The polarization vector is found to be compatible with zero.

A study of strange particle production in νμ charged current interactions in the NOMAD experiment
A study of strange particle production in νμ charged current interactions has been performed using the data from the NOMAD experiment. Yields of neutral strange particles (K0s,Λ,Λ̄) have been measured. Mean multiplicities are reported as a function of the event kinematic variables Eν, W2 and Q2 as well as of the variables describing particle behaviour within a hadronic jet: xF, z and pT2. Decays of resonances and heavy hyperons with identified K0s and Λ in the final state have been analyzed. Clear signals corresponding to K★±, Σ★±, Ξ− and Σ0 have been observed.

Forward jet production in deep inelastic ep scattering and low-x parton dynamics at HERA
Differential inclusive jet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 38.7 pb−1. The jets have been identified using the kT cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode in the laboratory frame; they have been selected with jet transverse energy, ETjet above 6 GeV and jet pseudorapidity, ηjet, between −1 and 3. Measurements of cross sections as functions of ETjet, Björken x and the photon virtuality, Q2, are presented. Three phase-space regions have been selected in order to study parton dynamics from the most global to the most restrictive region of forward-going (close to the proton-beam direction) jets at low x, where the effects of BFKL evolution might be present. The measurements have been compared to the predictions of leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo models and fixed-order perturbative QCD calculations. In the forward region, O(αs1) QCD calculations underestimate the data up to an order of magnitude at low x. An improved description of the data in this region is obtained by including O(αs2) QCD corrections, which account for the lowest-order tˆ-channel gluon-exchange diagrams, highlighting the importance of such terms in the parton dynamics at low x.

Inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Single- and double-differential inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb^-1. The measurement was performed at large values of the photon virtuality, Q^2, between 125 and 20000 GeV^2. The jets were reconstructed with the k_T cluster algorithm in the Breit reference frame and selected by requiring their transverse energies in the Breit frame, E_T,B^jet, to be larger than 8 GeV. In addition, the invariant mass of the dijet system, M_jj, was required to be greater than 20 GeV. The cross sections are described by the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD.

Status Report of the DPHEP Study Group: Towards a Global Effort for Sustainable Data Preservation in High Energy Physics
Data from high-energy physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment, laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and policies in high-energy physics.

Measurement of beauty production in DIS and extraction at ZEUS
Beauty production in deep inelastic scattering with events in which a muon and a jet are observed in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb^-1. The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q^2 &gt; 2 Gev^2, and inelasticity, 0.05 &lt; y &lt; 0.7, with the requirement of a muon and a jet. Total and differential cross sections are presented and compared to QCD predictions. The beauty contribution to the structure function F_2 was extracted and is compared to theoretical predictions.

Measurement of the t dependence in exclusive photoproduction of <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:mi>ϒ</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">(</mml:mo><mml:mn>1</mml:mn><mml:mi>S</mml:mi><mml:mo stretchy="false">)</mml:mo></mml:math> mesons at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reaction gamma p -> Upsilon(1S) p has been studied with the ZEUS detector in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb^-1. The measurement covers the kinematic range 60<W<220 GeV and Q^2<1 GeV^2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and Q^2 is the photon virtuality. The exponential slope, b, of the t dependence of the cross section, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, has been measured, yielding b = 4.3 +2.0 -1.3 (stat.) +0.5 -0.6 (syst.) GeV^-2. This constitutes the first measurement of the t dependence of the gamma p -> Upsilon(1S) p cross section.

Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in ${e}^{+}p$ collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarized positron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/d{Q}^{2}$, $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dx$ and $d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy$ and the reduced cross section $\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ are measured in the kinematic region ${Q}^{2}&gt;185\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{GeV}}^{2}$ and $y&lt;0.9$, where ${Q}^{2}$ is the four-momentum transfer squared, $x$ the Bjorken scaling variable and $y$ the inelasticity of the interaction. The measurements are performed separately for positively and negatively polarized positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of $135.5\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a center-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions ${\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{F}}_{3}$ and ${F}_{3}^{\ensuremath{\gamma}Z}$ are determined by combining the ${e}^{+}p$ results presented in this paper with previously published ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter ${A}^{+}$ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass
The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q 2 < 1000 GeV2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb−1. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q 2, Bjorken x, jet trans- verse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q 2. The running beauty-quark mass, m b at the scale m b , was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be m b (m b ) = 4.07 ± 0.14 (fit) − 0.07 + 0.01 (mod.) − 0.00 + 0.05 (param.) − 0.05 + 0.08 (theo.) GeV.

Measurement of B0−0 mixing at the CERN Spp̄S collider
We report on a new measurement of B0−B0 mixing at the CERN Spp̄S collider. Mixing is measured in the non-isolated high mass dimoun sample using data from the 1988–1989 collider runs. The measured value of the mixing parameter, χ, is 0.145±0.035(stat.) ± 0.014(syst.). The average of this measurement and that from our 1984–1985 data is ξ= 0.14 ± 0.029 (stat.) ± 0.017 (syst.) assuming fully correlated errors. Using the measurement of ξd from ARGUS and CLEO , we obtain χ = 0.50 ± 0.20, which gives a limit of χs > 0.17 (0.12) at 90% (95%) CL. Including the measurements of χ from the ALEPH and L3 experiments gives χs = 0.53 ± 0.15, and a limit of χs > 0.27 (0.23) at 90% (95%) CL.

Search for new heavy quarks in proton-antiproton collisions at $$\sqrt s = 0.63 TeV$$
We report on a search for new heavy quarks decaying semileptonically into muons, using 4.7 pb−1 of data taken during the CERN $$p\bar p$$ collider runs in 1988 and 1989. The properties of isolated muons accompanied by jets are consistent with the predictions from the Standard Model but do not show a signal for a new heavy quark. Combining all the UA1 data (5.4 pb−1), lower mass limits are obtained at 60 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for thet-quark and 43 GeV/c2 (95% CL) for a fourth-generation charge-1/3 quark (b′-quark).

Inclusive jet cross sections and dijet correlations in photoproduction at HERA
Inclusive jet cross sections in photoproduction for events containing a $D^*$ meson have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of $78.6 {\rm pb}^{-1}$. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, $Q^2$, of less than 1 GeV$^2$, and a photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range $130<W_{\gamma p}<280 {\rm GeV}$. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations. Good agreement is found with the NLO calculations over most of the measured kinematic region. Requiring a second jet in the event allowed a more detailed comparison with QCD calculations. The measured dijet cross sections are also compared to Monte Carlo (MC) models which incorporate leading-order matrix elements followed by parton showers and hadronisation. The NLO QCD predictions are in general agreement with the data although differences have been isolated to regions where contributions from higher orders are expected to be significant. The MC models give a better description than the NLO predictions of the shape of the measured cross sections.

Measurement of prompt photons with associated jets in photoproduction at HERA
The photoproduction of prompt photons, together with an accompanying jet, has been studied in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 77 pb-1. Cross sections were measured for the transverse energy of the photon and the jet larger than 5 and 6 GeV, respectively. The differential γ+jet cross sections were reconstructed as functions of the transverse energy, pseudorapidity and xγ obs, the fraction of the incoming photon momentum taken by the photon-jet system. Predictions based on leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo models and next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD generally underestimate the cross sections for the transverse energies of prompt photons below 7 GeV, while the kT-factorisation QCD calculation agrees with the data better. When the minimum transverse energy of prompt photons is increased to 7 GeV, both NLO QCD and the kT-factorisation calculations are in good agreement with the data.

HERA and the LHC - A workshop on the implications of HERA for LHC physics: Proceedings - Part B
The HERA electron--proton collider has collected 100 pb$^{-1}$ of data since its start-up in 1992, and recently moved into a high-luminosity operation mode, with upgraded detectors, aiming to increase the total integrated luminosity per experiment to more than 500 pb$^{-1}$. HERA has been a machine of excellence for the study of QCD and the structure of the proton. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which will collide protons with a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, will be completed at CERN in 2007. The main mission of the LHC is to discover and study the mechanisms of electroweak symmetry breaking, possibly via the discovery of the Higgs particle, and search for new physics in the TeV energy scale, such as supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Besides these goals, the LHC will also make a substantial number of precision measurements and will offer a new regime to study the strong force via perturbative QCD processes and diffraction. For the full LHC physics programme a good understanding of QCD phenomena and the structure function of the proton is essential. Therefore, in March 2004, a one-year-long workshop started to study the implications of HERA on LHC physics. This included proposing new measurements to be made at HERA, extracting the maximum information from the available data, and developing/improving the theoretical and experimental tools. This report summarizes the results achieved during this workshop.

Measurement of K0 S, Λ and Λ̄ production at HERA
The production of the neutral strange hadrons K0 S, Λ and Λ̄ has been measured in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. Cross sections, baryon-to-meson ratios, relative yields of strange and charged light hadrons, Λ (Λ̄) asymmetry and polarization have been measured in three kinematic regions: Q2 > 25 GeV2; 5 < Q2 < 25 GeV2; and in photoproduction (Q2≃0). In photoproduction the presence of two hadronic jets, each with at least 5 GeV transverse energy, was required. The measurements agree in general with Monte Carlo models and are consistent with measurements made at e+e- colliders, except for an enhancement of baryon relative to meson production in photoproduction.

Search for stop production in R-parity-violating supersymmetry at HERA
A search for stop production in R-parity-violating supersymmetry has been performed in $e^{+}p$ interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 65 pb$^{-1}$. At HERA, the R-parity-violating coupling $\lambda'$ allows resonant squark production, $e^+d\to\tilde{q}$. Since the lowest-mass squark state in most supersymmetry models is the light stop, $\tilde{t}$, this search concentrated on production of $\tilde{t}$, followed either by a direct R-parity-violating decay, or by the gauge decay to $b\tilde{\chi}^+_{1}$. No evidence for stop production was found and limits were set on $\lambda'_{131}$ as a function of the stop mass in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The results have also been interpreted in terms of constraints on the parameters of the minimal Supergravity model.

Measurement of D*± production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A bstract The production of D *± mesons in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured for exchanged photon virtualities 5 &lt; Q 2 &lt; 1000 GeV 2 , using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb −1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Differential cross sections have been measured and compared to next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The cross-sections are used to extract the charm contribution to the proton structure functions, expressed in terms of the reduced charm cross section, $ \sigma_{\mathrm{red}}^{{c\overline{c}}} $ . Theoretical calculations based on fits to inclusive HERA data are compared to the results.

Production of the excited charm mesons and at HERA
The production of the excited charm mesons D1(2420) and D2⁎(2460) in ep collisions has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373pb−1. The masses of the neutral and charged states, the widths of the neutral states, and the helicity parameter of D1(2420)0 were determined and compared with other measurements and with theoretical expectations. The measured helicity parameter of the D10 allows for some mixing of S- and D-waves in its decay to D⁎±π∓. The result is also consistent with a pure D-wave decay. Ratios of branching fractions of the two decay modes of the D2⁎(2460)0 and D2⁎(2460)± states were measured and compared with previous measurements. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into D1 and D2⁎ were measured and are consistent with those obtained in e+e− annihilations.

Exclusive electroproduction of two pions at HERA
The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < M{\pi}{\pi} < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(M{\pi}{\pi})|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the {\rho}, {\rho}' and {\rho}" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios {\sigma}({\rho}' \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) and {\sigma}({\rho}" \rightarrow {\pi}{\pi})/{\sigma}({\rho}) was extracted. The pion form factor obtained in the present analysis is compared to that obtained in e+e- \rightarrow {\pi}+{\pi}-.

Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic $$e^\pm p$$ scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 372 pb $$^{-1}$$ . The measurement was performed for $$\gamma ^{*}$$ –p centre-of-mass energies in the range $$90< W < {250}\,{\mathrm{GeV}}$$ and for photon virtualities $$Q^2 > {25}\,{\mathrm{GeV}^{2}}$$ . Energy flows around the jet axis are presented. The cross section is presented as a function of $$\beta $$ and $$\phi $$ , where $$\beta =x/x_\mathrm{I\!P}$$ , x is the Bjorken variable and $$x_\mathrm{I\!P}$$ is the proton fractional longitudinal momentum loss. The angle $$\phi $$ is defined by the $$\gamma ^{*}$$ –dijet plane and the $$\gamma ^{*}$$ – $$e^\pm $$ plane in the rest frame of the diffractive final state. The $$\phi $$ cross section is measured in bins of $$\beta $$ . The results are compared to predictions from models based on different assumptions about the nature of the diffractive exchange.

Combined QCD and electroweak analysis of HERA data
A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. The input data are the neutral current and charged current inclusive cross sections which were previously used in the QCD analysis leading to the HERAPDF2.0 PDFs. In addition, the polarization of the electron beam was taken into account for the ZEUS data recorded between 2004 and 2007. Results on the vector and axial-vector couplings of the $Z$ boson to $u$- and $d$-type quarks, on the value of the electroweak mixing angle and the mass of the $W$ boson are presented. The values obtained for the electroweak parameters are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A bstract A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:msqrt> </mml:math> = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ(1S) in exclusive photoproduction at HERA
The exclusive photoproduction reactions $\gamma p \to J/\psi(1S) p$ and $\gamma p \to \psi(2S) p$ have been measured at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb$^{-1}$. The measurement was made in the kinematic range $30 < W < 180$ GeV, $Q^2 < 1$ GeV$^2$ and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $W$ is the photon--proton centre-of-mass energy, $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, $\psi(2S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $\psi(2S) \to J/\psi(1S) \pi^+ \pi^-$ with subsequent decay $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The ratio of the production cross sections, $R = \sigma_{\psi(2S)} / \sigma_{J/\psi(1S)}$, has been measured as a function of $W$ and $|t|$ and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.

Measurement of $$b\bar b$$ correlations at the CERN $$p\bar p$$ collider
We report on measurements of correlated $$b\bar b$$ production in $$p\bar p$$ collisions at $$\sqrt s = 630GeV$$ , using dimuon data to tag both theb and $$\bar b$$ quarks. Starting from an inclusive dimuon sample we obtain improved cross-sections for single inclusive beauty production and confirm our earlier results on $$B^0 - \bar B^0$$ mixing. From a study of $$b\bar b$$ correlations we derive explicit cross-sections for semi-differential $$b\bar b$$ production. We compare the measured cross-sections and correlations to $$\mathcal{O}\left( {\alpha _s^3 } \right)$$ QCD predictions and find good quantitative agreement. From the measured angular distributions we establish a size-able contribution from higher order QCD processes with a significance of about seven standard deviations. A large nonperturbative contribution to these higher order corrections is excluded.

Search for pentaquarks decaying to Ξπ in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
A search for pentaquarks decaying to Ξ−π− (Ξ−π+) and corresponding antiparticles has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The data sample consists of deep inelastic ep scattering events at centre-of-mass energies of 300 and 318 GeV, and corresponds to 121 pb−1 of integrated luminosity. A clear signal for Ξ0(1530)→Ξ−π+ was observed. However, no signal for any new baryonic state was observed at higher masses in either the Ξ−π− or Ξ−π+ channels. The searches in the antiparticle channels were also negative. Upper limits on the ratio of a possible Ξ3/2−− (Ξ3/20) signal to the Ξ0(1530) signal were set in the mass range 1650–2350 MeV.

Multijet production at low in deep inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive dijet and trijet production in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering has been measured for $10<Q^2<100$ GeV$^2$ and low Bjorken $x$, $10^{-4}<x_{\rm Bj}<10^{-2}$. The data were taken at the HERA $ep$ collider with centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 318 \gev$ using the ZEUS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $82 {\rm pb}^{-1}$. Jets were identified in the hadronic centre-of-mass (HCM) frame using the $k_{T}$ cluster algorithm in the longitudinally invariant inclusive mode. Measurements of dijet and trijet differential cross sections are presented as functions of $Q^2$, $x_{\rm Bj}$, jet transverse energy, and jet pseudorapidity. As a further examination of low-$x_{\rm Bj}$ dynamics, multi-differential cross sections as functions of the jet correlations in transverse momenta, azimuthal angles, and pseudorapidity are also presented. Calculations at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{s}^3)$ generally describe the trijet data well and improve the description of the dijet data compared to the calculation at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{s}^2)$.

Diffractive photoproduction of D*±(2010) at HERA
Diffractive photoproduction of D*±(2010) mesons was measured with the ZEUS detector at the ep collider HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 78.6 pb-1. The D* mesons were reconstructed in the kinematic range: transverse momentum pT(D*) > 1.9 GeV and pseudorapidity |η(D*)|<1.6, using the decay D*+→D0π+ s followed by D0→K-π+(+c.c.). Diffractive events were identified by a large gap in pseudorapidity between the produced hadronic state and the outgoing proton. Cross sections are reported for photon–proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 300 GeV and for photon virtualities Q2 < 1 GeV2, in two ranges of the Pomeron fractional momentum xIP<0.035 and xIP<0.01. The relative contribution of diffractive events to the inclusive D*±(2010) photoproduction cross section is about 6%. The data are in agreement with perturbative QCD calculations based on various parameterisations of diffractive parton distribution functions. The results are consistent with diffractive QCD factorisation.

Measurement of open beauty production at HERA in the D*μ final state
The production of beauty quarks with a D*+- and a muon in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb-1. Low transverse-momentum thresholds for the muon and D* meson allow a measurement of beauty production closer to the production threshold than previous measurements. The beauty signal was extracted using the charge correlations and angular distributions of the muon with respect to the D* meson. Cross sections for photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering are somewhat higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions, and compatible with other measurements.
