The H1 detector at HERA
General aspects of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA as well as technical descriptions of the magnet, luminosity system, trigger, slow-control, data acquisition and off-line data handling are given. The three major components of the detector, the tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors, will be described in a forthcoming article. The present paper describes the detector that was used from 1992 to the end of 1994. After this a major upgrade of some components was undertaken. Some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given.

Elastic and proton-dissociative photoproduction of J/ψ mesons at HERA
Cross sections for elastic and proton-dissociative photoproduction of J/ψ mesons are measured with the H1 detector in positron-proton collisions at HERA. The data were collected at ep centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}\approx318~\mathrm{GeV}$ and $\sqrt {s}\approx225 \ \mbox{GeV}$ , corresponding to integrated luminosities of $\mathcal{L} = 130~\mbox{pb}^{-1}$ and $\mathcal{L} = 10.8~\mbox{pb}^{-1}$ , respectively. The cross sections are measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy in the range 25<W γp <110 GeV. Differential cross sections dσ/dt, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, are measured in the range |t|<1.2 GeV2 for the elastic process and |t|<8 GeV2 for proton dissociation. The results are compared to other measurements. The W γp and t-dependences are parametrised using phenomenological fits.

Measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) in the low-x region at HERA
A measurement of the proton structure function F2 (x, Q2) is presented with about 1000 neutral current deep inelastic scattering events for Bjorken x in the range x ⋍ 10−2 – 10−4 and Q2 > 5 GeV2. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 22.5 nb−1 recorded by the H1 detector in the first year of HERA operation. The structure function F2 (x, Q2) shows a significant rise with decreasing x.

Measurement and QCD analysis of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering cross section at HERA
A detailed analysis is presented of the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process ep→eXY, where Y is a proton or a low mass proton excitation carrying a fraction 1-xIP>0.95 of the incident proton longitudinal momentum and the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex satisfies |t|<1 GeV2. Using data taken by the H1 experiment, the cross section is measured for photon virtualities in the range 3.5≤Q2≤1600 GeV2, triple differentially in xIP, Q2 and β=x/xIP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. At low xIP, the data are consistent with a factorisable xIP dependence, which can be described by the exchange of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept αIP(0)=1.118±0.008(exp.)+0.029 -0.010(model). Diffractive parton distribution functions and their uncertainties are determined from a next-to-leading order DGLAP QCD analysis of the Q2 and β dependences of the cross section. The resulting gluon distribution carries an integrated fraction of around 70% of the exchanged momentum in the Q2 range studied. Total and differential cross sections are also measured for the diffractive charged current process e+p→ν̄eXY and are found to be well described by predictions based on the diffractive parton distributions. The ratio of the diffractive to the inclusive neutral current ep cross sections is studied. Over most of the kinematic range, this ratio shows no significant dependence on Q2 at fixed xIP and x or on x at fixed Q2 and β.

The tracking, calorimeter and muon detectors of the H1 experiment at HERA
Technical aspects of the three major components of the H1 detector at the electron-proton storage ring HERA are described. This paper covers the detector status up to the end of 1994 when a major upgrading of some of its elements was undertaken. A description of the other elements of the detector and some performance figures from luminosity runs at HERA during 1993 and 1994 are given in a paper previously published in this journal.

First measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of proton diffraction
A measurement is presented, using data taken with the H1 detector at HERA, of the contribution of diffractive interactions to deep-inelastic electron-proton (ep) scattering in the kinematic range 8.5 < Q2 < 50GeV2, 2.4 × 10−4 < Bjorken-x < 0.0133, and 3.7 × 10−4 < χp < 0.043. The diffractive contribution to the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) is evaluated as a function of the appropriate deep-inelastic scattering variables χp, Q2, β (= χχp) using a class of deep-inelastic ep scattering events with no hadronic energy flow in an interval of pseudo-rapidity adjacent to the proton beam direction. the dependence of this contribution on χp is measured to be χp−n with n = 1.19 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.07 (syst.) independent of β and Q2, which is consistent with both a diffractive interpretation and a factorisable ep diffractive cross section. A first measurement of the deep-inelastic structure of the pomeron in the form of the Q2 and β dependences of a factorised structure function is presented. For all measured β, this structure function is observed to be consistent with scale invariance.

The H 1 liquid argon calorimeter system
The liquid argon calorimeter of the H 1 detector presently taking data at the HERA ep collider at DESY, Hamburg, is described. The main physics requirements and the most salient design features relevant to this calorimeter are given. The aim to have smooth and hermetic calorimetric coverage over the polar angular range 4° ≤ θ ≤ 154° is achieved by a single liquid argon cryostat containing calorimeter stacks structured in wheels and octants for easy handling. The absorber materials used are lead in the electromagnetic part and stainless steel in the hadronic part. The read-out system is pipelined to reduce the dead time induced by the high trigger rate expected at the HERA collider where consecutive bunches are separated in time by 96 ns. The main elements of the calorimeter, such as the cryostat, with its associated cryogenics, the stack modules, the read-out, calibration and trigger electronics as well as the data acquisition system are described. Performance results from data taken in calibration runs with full size H 1 calorimeter stacks at a CERN test beam, as well as results from data collected with the complete H 1 detector using cosmic rays during the initial phase of ep operations are presented. The observed energy resolutions and linearities are well in agreement with the requirements.

A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2)
A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2) is reported for momentum transfers squared Q2 between 4.5 GeV2 and 1600 GeV2 and for Bjorken x between 1.8 × 10−14 and 0.13 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1993. It is observed that F2 increases significantly with decreasing x, confirming our previous measurement made with one tenth of the data available in this analysis. The Q2 dependence is approximately logarithmic over the full kinematic range covered. The subsample of deep inelastic events with a large pseudo-rapidity gap in the hadronic energy flow close to the proton remnant is used to measure the “diffractive” contribution to F2.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
The cross-section for deeply virtual Compton scattering in the reaction ep→eγp has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using integrated luminosities of 95.0 pb−1 of e+p and 16.7 pb−1 of e−p collisions. Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the exchanged-photon virtuality, Q2, and the centre-of-mass energy, W, of the γ∗p system in the region 5<Q2<100 GeV2 and 40<W<140 GeV. The measured cross-sections rise steeply with increasing W. The measurements are compared to QCD-based calculations.

Measurement of the inclusive e ± p scattering cross section at high inelasticity y and of the structure function F L
A measurement is presented of the inclusive neutral current e ± p scattering cross section using data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA during the years 2003 to 2007 with proton beam energies E p of 920, 575, and 460 GeV. The kinematic range of the measurement covers low absolute four-momentum transfers squared, 1.5 GeV2<Q 2<120 GeV2, small values of Bjorken x, 2.9⋅10−5<x<0.01, and extends to high inelasticity up to y=0.85. The structure function F L is measured by combining the new results with previously published H1 data at E p =920 GeV and E p =820 GeV. The new measurements are used to test several phenomenological and QCD models applicable in this low Q 2 and low x kinematic domain.

LHC forward physics
The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. Chapter 8 is dedicated to the BFKL dynamics, multiparton interactions, and saturation. The report ends with an overview of the forward detectors at LHC. Each chapter is correlated with a comprehensive bibliography, attempting to provide to the interested reader with a wide opportunity for further studies.

Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering at HERA
A measurement is presented of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering e++p→e++γ+p at HERA using data taken with the H1 detector. The cross section is measured as a function of the photon virtuality, Q2, and the invariant mass, W, of the γp system, in the kinematic range 2<Q2<20GeV2, 30<W<120GeV and |t|<1GeV2, where t is the squared momentum transfer to the proton. The measurement is compared to QCD based calculations.

Diffractive deep-inelastic scattering with a leading proton at HERA
The cross section for the diffractive deep-inelastic scattering process $ep \to e X p$ is measured, with the leading final state proton detected in the H1 Forward Proton Spectrometer. The data analysed cover the range \xpom <0.1 in fractional proton longitudinal momentum loss, 0.08 < |t| < 0.5 GeV^{-2} in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, 2 < Q^2 < 50 GeV^2 in photon virtuality and 0.004 < \beta = x / \xpom < 1, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. For $\xpom \lapprox 10^{-2}$, the differential cross section has a dependence of approximately ${\rm d} \sigma / {\rm d} t \propto e^{6 t}$, independently of \xpom, \beta and Q^2 within uncertainties. The cross section is also measured triple differentially in \xpom, \beta and Q^2. The \xpom dependence is interpreted in terms of an effective pomeron trajectory with intercept $\alpha_{\pom}(0)=1.114 \pm 0.018 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.012 ({\rm syst.}) ^{+0.040}_{-0.020} ({\rm model})$ and a sub-leading exchange. The data are in good agreement with an H1 measurement for which the event selection is based on a large gap in the rapidity distribution of the final state hadrons, after accounting for proton dissociation contributions in the latter. Within uncertainties, the dependence of the cross section on x and Q^2 can thus be factorised from the dependences on all studied variables which characterise the proton vertex, for both the pomeron and the sub-leading exchange.

Results from pion calibration runs for the H 1 liquid argon calorimeter and comparisons with simulations
We present results on calibration runs performed with pions at the CERN SPS for different modules of the H 1 liquid argon calorimeter which consists of an electromagnetic section with lead absorbers and a hadronic section with steel absorbers. The data cover an energy range from 3.7 to 205 GeV. Detailed comparisons of the data and simulation with GHEISHA 8 in the framework of GEANT 3.14 are presented. The measured pion induced shower profiles are well described by the simulation. The total signal of pions on an energy scale determined from electron measurements is reproduced to better than 3% in various module configurations. After application of weighting functions, determined from Monte Carlo data and needed to achieve compensation, the reconstructed measured energies agree with simulation to about 3%. The energies of hadronic showers are reconstructed with a resolution of about 50%√E ⨸ 2%. This result is achieved by inclusion of signals from an iron streamer tube tail catcher behind the liquid argon stacks.

Diffractive electroproduction of ρ and ϕ mesons at HERA
Diffractive electroproduction of rho and phi mesons is measured at HERA with the H1 detector in the elastic and proton dissociative channels. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 51 pb^-1. About 10500 rho and 2000 phi events are analysed in the kinematic range of squared photon virtuality 2.5 < Q^2 < 60 GeV^2, photon-proton centre of mass energy 35 < W < 180 GeV and squared four-momentum transfer to the proton |t| < 3 GeV^2. The total, longitudinal and transverse cross sections are measured as a function of Q^2, W and |t|. The measurements show a transition to a dominantly "hard" behaviour, typical of high gluon densities and small q\bar{q} dipoles, for Q^2 larger than 10 to 20 GeV^2. They support flavour independence of the diffractive exchange, expressed in terms of the scaling variable (Q^2 + M_V^2)/4, and proton vertex factorisation. The spin density matrix elements are measured as a function of kinematic variables. The ratio of the longitudinal to transverse cross sections, the ratio of the helicity amplitudes and their relative phases are extracted. Several of these measurements have not been performed before and bring new information on the dynamics of diffraction in a QCD framework. The measurements are discussed in the context of models using generalised parton distributions or universal dipole cross sections.

Measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section at low Q2 and x at HERA
A measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section is presented in the region of low momentum transfers, 0.2 GeV2 ≤Q 2≤12 GeV2, and low Bjorken x, 5⋅10−6≤x≤0.02. The result is based on two data sets collected in dedicated runs by the H1 Collaboration at HERA at beam energies of 27.6 GeV and 920 GeV for positrons and protons, respectively. A combination with data previously published by H1 leads to a cross section measurement of a few percent accuracy. A kinematic reconstruction method exploiting radiative ep events extends the measurement to lower Q 2 and larger x. The data are compared with theoretical models which apply to the transition region from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering.

A first measurement is reported of the longitudinal proton structure function F_L(x,Q^2) at the ep collider HERA. It is based on inclusive deep inelastic e^+p scattering cross section measurements with a positron beam energy of 27.5 GeV and proton beam energies of 920, 575 and 460 GeV. Employing the energy dependence of the cross section, F_L is measured in a range of squared four-momentum transfers 12 < Q^2 < 90 GeV^2 and low Bjorken x 0.00024 < x < 0.0036. The F_L values agree with higher order QCD calculations based on parton densities obtained using cross section data previously measured at HERA.

A precision measurement of the inclusive ep scattering cross section at HERA
A measurement of the inclusive deep-inelastic neutral current e+p scattering cross section is reported in the region of four-momentum transfer squared, 12<=Q^2<=150 GeV^2, and Bjorken x, 2x10^-4<=x<=0.1. The results are based on data collected by the H1 Collaboration at the ep collider HERA at positron and proton beam energies of E_e=27.6 GeV and E_p=920 GeV, respectively. The data are combined with previously published data, taken at E_p=820 GeV. The accuracy of the combined measurement is typically in the range of 1.3-2%. A QCD analysis at next-to-leading order is performed to determine the parton distributions in the proton based on H1 data.

Measurement of inclusive $$\varvec{ep}$$ e p cross sections at high $${\varvec{Q}^{2}}$$ Q 2 at $$\varvec{\sqrt{s}}=225$$ s = 225 and 252 GeV and of the longitudinal proton structure function $${\varvec{F}_{\varvec{L}}}$$ F L at HERA
Inclusive $$ep$$ double differential cross sections for neutral current deep inelastic scattering are measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were taken with a lepton beam energy of $$27.6$$ GeV and two proton beam energies of $$E_p=460$$ and 575 GeV corresponding to centre-of-mass energies of 225 and 252 GeV, respectively. The measurements cover the region of $$6.5\times 10^{-4} \le x \le 0.65$$ for $$35\le Q^2 \le 800$$ GeV $$^2$$ up to $$y=0.85$$ . The measurements are used together with previously published H1 data at $$E_p=920$$ GeV and lower $$Q^2$$ data at $$E_p=460$$ , $$575$$ and $$920$$ GeV to extract the longitudinal proton structure function $$F_L$$ in the region $$1.5\le Q^2 \le 800$$ GeV $$^2$$ .

On the rise of the proton structure function F2 towards low x
A measurement of the derivative (d ln F_2 / d lnx)_(Q^2)= -lambda(x,Q^2) of the proton structure function F_2 is presented in the low x domain of deeply inelastic positron-proton scattering. For 5*10^(-5)<=x<=0.01 and Q^2>=1.5 GeV^2, lambda(x,Q^2) is found to be independent of x and to increase linearly with ln(Q^2).

Measurement of $F_2^{c\bar{c}}$ and $F_2^{b\bar{b}}$ at low Q2 and x * using the H1 vertex detector at HERA
Measurements are presented of inclusive charm and beauty cross sections in e^+p collisions at HERA for values of photon virtuality 12 \le Q^2 \le 60 GeV^2 and of the Bjorken scaling variable 0.0002 \le x \le 0.005. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 vertex detector. Values for the structure functions F_2^{c\bar{c}} and F_2^{b\bar{b}} are obtained. This is the first measurement of F_2^{b\bar{b}} in this kinematic range. The results are found to be compatible with the predictions of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and withprevious measurements of F_2^{c\bar{c}}.

InclusiveD 0 andD*± production in neutral current deep inelasticep scattering at HERA
First results on inclusive $$\mathop {D^0 }\limits^{( - )} $$ andD*± production in neutral current deep inelasticep scattering are reported using data collected by the H1 experiment at HERA in 1994. Differential cross sections are presented for both channels and are found to agree well with QCD predictions based on the boson gluon fusion process. A charm production cross section for 10 GeV2≤Q2≤100 GeV2 and 0.01≤y≤0.7 of $$\sigma (ep \to ec\bar cX) = (17.4 \pm 1.6 \pm 1.7 \pm 1.4) nb$$ is derived. A first measurement of the charm contribution $$F_2^{c\bar c} (x,Q^2 )$$ to the proton structure function for Bjorkenx between 8·10−4 and 8·10−3 is presented. In this kinematic range a ratio $$F_2^{c\bar c} /F_2 = 0.237 \pm 0.021 \pm 0.041$$ is observed.

A measurement of the proton structure function F2(x, Q2) at low x and low Q2 at HERA
The results of a measurement of the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) and the virtual photon-proton cross section are reported for momentum transfers squared Q2 between 0.35 GeV2 and 3.5 GeV2 and for Bjorken-x values down to 6 × 10−6 using data collected by the HERA experiment H1 in 1995. The data represent an increase in kinematic reach to lower x and Q2 values of about a factor of 5 compared to previous H1 measurements. Including measurements from fixed target experiments the rise of F2 with decreasing x is found to be less steep for the lowest Q2 values measured. Phenomenological models at low Q2 are compared with the data.

Total photoproduction cross section measurement at HERA energies
We present first results on the total photoproduction cross section measurement with the H1 detector at HERA. The data were extracted from low Q2 collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons. The γp total cross section has been measured by two independent methods in the γp center of mass energy range from 90 to 290 GeV. For an average center of mass energy of 195 GeV a value of σtot (γp) = 159 ± 7 (stat.) ± 20 (syst.) μb was obtained.

Determination of αs and sin2θw from measurements of the total hadronic cross section in e+e− annihilation
We have measured the total normalized cross section R for the process e+e− → hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between 14.0 and 46.8 GeV based on an integrated luminosity of 60.3 pb−1. The data are well described by the standard SU(3)c⊗SU(2)L⊗U(1) model with the production of the five known quarks. No open production of a sixth quark with charge 2/3 or 1/3 occurs below a centre-of-mass energy of 46.6 or 46.3 GeV, respectively. A fitting procedure which takes the correlations between measurements into account was used to determine the electroweak mixing angle sin2θw and the strong coupling constant αs(S) in second-order QCD. We applied this procedure to the CELLO data and in addition included the data from other experiments at PETRA and PEP. Both fits give consistent results. The fit to the combined data yields αs(342 GeV2) = 0.165±0.030, and sin2θw = 0.236±0.020. Fixing sin2θw at the world average value of 0.23 yields αs(342GeV2) = 0.169±0.025.

Deeply virtual Compton scattering and its beam charge asymmetry in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo>±</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math> collisions at HERA
A measurement of elastic deeply virtual Compton scattering gamma* p -> gamma p using e^+ p and e^- p collision data recorded with the H1 detector at HERA is presented. The analysed data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 306 pb^-1, almost equally shared between both beam charges. The cross section is measured as a function of the virtuality Q^2 of the exchanged photon and the centre-of-mass energy W of the gamma* p system in the kinematic domain 6.5 < Q^2 < 80 GeV^2, 30 < W < 140 GeV and |t| < 1 GeV^2, where t denotes the squared momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The cross section is determined differentially in t for different Q^2 and W values and exponential t-slope parameters are derived. Using e^+ p and e^- p data samples, a beam charge asymmetry is extracted for the first time in the low Bjorken x kinematic domain. The observed asymmetry is attributed to the interference between Bethe-Heitler and deeply virtual Compton scattering processes. Experimental results are discussed in the context of two different models, one based on generalised parton distributions and one based on the dipole approach.

Tests of QCD factorisation in the diffractive production of dijets in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction (Q^2<0.01 GeV^2) and deep-inelastic scattering processes (DIS, 4<Q^2<80 GeV^2). The event topology is given by ep-> e X Y, in which the system X, containing at least two jets, is separated from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y by a large rapidity gap. The dijet cross sections are compared with NLO QCD predictions based on diffractive parton densities previously obtained from a QCD analysis of inclusive diffractive DIS cross sections by H1. In DIS, the dijet data are well described, supporting the validity of QCD factorisation. The diffractive DIS dijet data are more sensitive to the diffractive gluon density at high fractional parton momentum than the measurements of inclusive diffractive DIS. In photoproduction, the predicted dijet cross section has to be multiplied by a factor of approximately 0.5 for both direct and resolved photon interactions to describe the measurements. The ratio of measured dijet cross section to NLO prediction in photoproduction is a factor 0.5+-0.1 smaller than the same ratio in DIS. This suppression is the first clear observation of QCD hard scattering factorisation breaking at HERA. The measurements are also compared to the two soft colour neutralisation models SCI and GAL. The SCI model describes diffractive dijet production in DIS but not in photoproduction. The GAL model fails in both kinematic regions.

The Belle II Silicon Vertex Detector
The KEKB machine and the Belle experiment in Tsukuba (Japan) are now undergoing an upgrade, leading to an ultimate luminosity of 8×1035cm−2s−1 in order to measure rare decays in the B system with high statistics. The previous vertex detector cannot cope with this 40-fold increase of luminosity and thus needs to be replaced. Belle II will be equipped with a two-layer Pixel Detector surrounding the beam pipe, and four layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors at higher radii than the old detector. The Silicon Vertex Detector (SVD) will have a total sensitive area of 1.13m2 and 223,744 channels—twice as many as its predecessor. All silicon sensors will be made from 150 mm wafers in order to maximize their size and thus to reduce the relative contribution of the support structure. The forward part has slanted sensors of trapezoidal shape to improve the measurement precision and to minimize the amount of material as seen by particles from the vertex. Fast-shaping front-end amplifiers will be used in conjunction with an online hit time reconstruction algorithm in order to reduce the occupancy to the level of a few percent at most. A novel “Origami” chip-on-sensor scheme is used to minimize both the distance between strips and amplifier (thus reducing the electronic noise) as well as the overall material budget. This report gives an overview on the status of the Belle II SVD and its components, including sensors, front-end detector ladders, mechanics, cooling and the readout electronics.

Measurement of charged particle multiplicity distributions in DIS at HERA and its implication to entanglement entropy of partons

Measurement of open beauty production at HERA
The first observation of open b production in ep collisions is reported. An event sample containing muons and jets has been selected which is enriched in semileptonic b quark decays. The visible cross section σ(ep→bb̄X→μX′)for Q2<1GeV2, 0.1<y<0.8 is measured to be 0.176±0.016(stat.)+0.026−0.017(syst.)nb for the muons to be detected in the range 35°<θμ<130° and p⊥μ>2.0GeV in the laboratory frame. The expected visible cross section based on a NLO QCD calculation is 0.104±0.017nb. The cross sections for electroproduction with Q2<1GeV2 and photoproduction are derived from the data and found to be σ(ep→ebb̄X)=7.1±0.6(stat.)+1.5−1.3(syst.)nb and σ(γp→bb̄X)=111±10(stat.)+23−20(syst.)nb at an average 〈Wγp〉∼180GeV, respectively.

Measurement of meson cross sections at HERA and determination of the gluon density in the proton using NLO QCD
With the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA, D∗ meson production cross sections have been measured in deep inelastic scattering with four-momentum transfers Q2 > 3 GeV2 and in photoproduction at energies around Wγp ≈ 88 GeV and 194 GeV. Next-to-Leading Order QCD calculations are found to describe the differential cross sections within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. Using these calculations, the NLO gluon momentum distribution in the proton, xgg(xg), has been extracted in the momentum fraction range 7.5 × 10−4 < xg < 4 × 10−2 at average scales μ2 = 25 to 50 GeV2. The gluon momentum fraction xg has been obtained from the measured kinematics of the scattered electron and the D∗ meson in the final state. The results compare well with the gluon distribution obtained from the analysis of scaling violations of the proton structure function F2.

Determination of the longitudinal proton structure function FL(x,Q2) at low x
A measurement of the inclusive cross section for the deep-inelastic scattering of positrons off protons at HERA is presented at momentum transfers 8.5 ≤ Q2 ≤ 35 GeV2 and large inelasticity <y> = 0.7, i.e. for the Bjorken-x range 0.00013 ≤ x ≤ 0.00055. Using a next-to-leading order QCD fit to the structure function F2 at lower y values, the contribution of F2 to the measured cross section at high y is calculated and, by subtraction, the longitudinal structure function FL is determined for the first time with an average value of FL = 0.52 ± 0.03 (statt)−0.22+0.25 (syst) at Q2 = 15.4 GeV2 and x = 0.000243.

Diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons at HERA
Results on diffractive photoproduction of ψ(2S) mesons are presented using data collected between 1996 and 2000 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 77 pb−1. The energy dependence of the diffractive ψ(2S) cross section is found to be similar to or possibly somewhat steeper than that for J/ψ mesons. The dependences of the elastic and proton dissociative ψ(2S) photoproduction cross sections on the squared momentum transfer t at the proton vertex are measured. The t-dependence of the elastic channel, parametrised as ebt, yields belψ(2S)=(4.31±0.57±0.46) GeV−2, compatible with that of the J/ψ. For the proton dissociative channel the result bpdψ(2S)=(0.59±0.13±0.12) GeV−2 is 2.3 standard deviations smaller than that measured for the J/ψ. With proper account of the individual wavefunctions theoretical predictions based on perturbative QCD are found to describe the measurements well.

Measurement of inclusive jet production in deep-inelastic scattering at high and determination of the strong coupling
Inclusive jet production is studied in neutral current deep-inelastic positron–proton scattering at large four momentum transfer squared Q2>150GeV2 with the H1 detector at HERA. Single and double differential inclusive jet cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and of the transverse energy ET of the jets in the Breit frame. The measurements are found to be well described by calculations at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. The running of the strong coupling is demonstrated and the value of αs(MZ) is determined. The ratio of the inclusive jet cross section to the inclusive neutral current cross section is also measured and used to extract a precise value for αs(MZ)=0.1193±0.0014(exp.)−0.0030+0.0047(th.)±0.0016(pdf).

Measurement of elastic electroproduction of mesons at HERA
The elastic electroproduction of φ mesons is studied at HERA with the H1 detector for photon virtualities 1<Q2<15GeV2 and hadronic centre of mass energies 40<W<130 GeV. The Q2 and t dependences of the cross section are extracted (t being the square of the four-momentum transfer to the target proton). When plotted as function of (Q2 + MV2) and scaled by the appropriate SU(5) quark charge factor, the φ meson cross section agrees within errors with the cross sections of the vector mesons V = ρ, ω and J/ψ. A detailed analysis is performed of the φ meson polarisation state and the ratio of the production cross sections for longitudinally and transversely polarised φ mesons is determined. A small but significant violation of s-channel helicity conservation (SCHC) is observed.

Elastic photoproduction of ϱ0 mesons at HERA
The cross section for the elastic photoproduction of ϱ0 mesons (γp → ϱ0p) has been measured with the H1 detector at HERA for two average photon-proton centre-of-mass energies of 55 and 187 GeV. The lower energy point was measured by observing directly the ϱ0 decay giving a cross section of 9.1 ± 0.9 (stat.) ± 2.5 (syst.) μb. The logarithmic slope parameter of the differential cross section, dσ/dt, is found to be 10.9 ± 2.4 (stat.) ± 1.1 (syst.) GeV−2. The ϱ0 decay polar angular distribution is found to be consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. The higher energy cross section was determined from analysis of the lower part of the hadronic invariant mass spectrum of diffractive photoproduction and found to be 13.6 ± 0.8 (stat.) ± 2.4 (syst.) μb.

BEDLOAD TRANSPORT IN A POOL-RIFFLE SEQUENCE OF A COASTAL ALASKA STREAM
ABSTRACT: A Helley‐Smith pressure differential bedload sampler was used to measure bedload transport at consecutive riffle sections of a riffle‐pool‐riffle sequence on Bambi Creek, a small (154 ha), second‐order stream on Chichagof Island, Alaska, during four storms over a 2‐year period. Maximum bedload transport rate measured was 4920 kg/h at a streamflow of 2.35 m 3 /s corresponding to a storm having a 5‐year return interval. Transport of larger sediment (&gt; 8 mm) varied systematically with streamflow at the two sampling locations. At flows up to approximately bankfull, transport of large sediment was greatest at the upstream site; at flows above bankfull, transport of large sediment was greatest at the downstream site. The net import of large sediment to the pool during moderate stormflows and net export of large sediment from the pool during flows above bankfull may be related to a “convergence” or “reversal” of competence between the upstream riffle and subsequent pool at flows approximating bankfull stage. Cross‐sections monitored within the study reach indicate that stormflows resulted in net filling of the riffle sections and net scour of the pool; periods of low streamflow resulted in net scour of the riffles and net filling of the pooL

Search for first generation leptoquarks in ep collisions at HERA
A search for first generation scalar and vector leptoquarks produced in ep collisions is performed by the H1 experiment at HERA. The full H1 data sample is used in the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 446 pb^-1. No evidence for the production of leptoquarks is observed in final states with a large transverse momentum electron or with large missing transverse momentum, and constraints on leptoquark models are derived. For leptoquark couplings of electromagnetic strength lambda=0.3, first generation leptoquarks with masses up to 800 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Combined inclusive diffractive cross sections measured with forward proton spectrometers in deep inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A combination of the inclusive diffractive cross section measurements made by the H1 and ZEUS Collaborations at HERA is presented. The analysis uses samples of diffractive deep inelastic ep scattering data at a centre-of-mass energy sqrt(s) = 318 GeV where leading protons are detected by dedicated spectrometers. Correlations of systematic uncertainties are taken into account, resulting in an improved precision of the cross section measurement which reaches 6% for the most precise points. The combined data cover the range 2.5 < Q2 < 200 GeV2 in photon virtuality, 0.00035 < xIP < 0.09 in proton fractional momentum loss, 0.09 < |t| < 0.55 GeV2 in squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex and 0.0018 < beta < 0.816 in beta = x/xIP, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable.

Determination of the strong coupling constant $${\varvec{{\alpha _\mathrm{s} (m_\mathrm{Z})}}}$$ in next-to-next-to-leading order QCD using H1 jet cross section measurements
The strong coupling constant αs is determined from inclusive jet and dijet cross sections in neutral-current deep-inelastic ep scattering (DIS) measured at HERA by the H1 collaboration using next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD predictions. The dependence of the NNLO predictions and of the resulting value of αs(mZ) at the Z-boson mass mZ are studied as a function of the choice of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. Using inclusive jet and dijet data together, the strong coupling constant is determined to be αs(mZ)=0.1157(20)exp(29)th . Complementary, αs(mZ) is determined together with parton distribution functions of the proton (PDFs) from jet and inclusive DIS data measured by the H1 experiment. The value αs(mZ)=0.1142(28)tot obtained is consistent with the determination from jet data alone. The impact of the jet data on the PDFs is studied. The running of the strong coupling is tested at different values of the renormalisation scale and the results are found to be in agreement with expectations.

Electron/pion separation with the H1 LAr calorimeters
The performances of the H1 liquid argon calorimeter modules for the energy measurements and identification of electrons are studied with test data taken at CERN in the energy range 5 to 166 GeV. Various electron identification estimators exploiting global or detailed shower characteristics are studied and compared. The usage of impact position measurements is also discussed. A best combination of robust shower estimators leads typically to π-misidentification probabilities in the range 1.5 to 5.0 × 10−3 at 30 GeV for 95% electron detection efficiency. This further reduces to ∼ 10−4 for these pions to be misidentified as electrons below 25 GeV.

Elastic electroproduction of ϱ and mesons at large Q2 at HERA
The total cross sections for the elastic electroproduction of P and Jψ mesons for Q2 > 8 GeV2 and 〈W〉 ⋍ 90 GeV/c2 are measured at HERA with the H1 detector. The measurements are for an integrated electron-proton luminosity of ⋍3 pb−1. The dependences of the total virtual photon-proton (γ∗p) cross sections on Q2, W and the momentum transfer squared to the proton (t), and, for the ϱ, the dependence on the polar decay angle (cos θ∗ are presented. The Jψ : ∂ cross section ratio is determined. The results are discussed in the light of theoretical models and of the interplay of hard and soft physics processes.

Measurement of beauty production at HERA using events with muons and jets
A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data.

Diffractive photoproduction of J/ψ mesons with large momentum transfer at HERA
The diffractive photoproduction of J/psi mesons is measured with the H1 detector at the ep collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 78 pb^-1. The differential cross section d sigma(gamma p -> J/psi Y) / d t is studied in the range 2 < |t| < 30 GeV^2, where t is the square of the four-momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The cross section is also presented as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy W in three t intervals, spanning the range 50 < W < 200 GeV. A fast rise of the cross section with W is observed for each t range and the slope for the effective linear Pomeron trajectory is measured to be alpha^\prime= -0.0135 \pm 0.0074 (stat.) \pm 0.0051 (syst.) GeV^-2. The measurements are compared with perturbative QCD models based on BFKL and DGLAP evolution. The data are found to be compatible with s-channel helicity conservation.

Diffractive open charm production in deep-inelastic scattering and photoproduction at HERA
Measurements are presented of diffractive open charm production at HERA. The event topology is given by ep→eXY where the system X contains at least one charmed hadron and is well separated by a large rapidity gap from a leading low-mass proton remnant system Y. Two analysis techniques are used for the cross section measurements. In the first, the charm quark is tagged by the reconstruction of a D*±(2010) meson. This technique is used in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and photoproduction (γp). In the second, a method based on the displacement of tracks from the primary vertex is used to measure the open charm contribution to the inclusive diffractive cross section in DIS. The measurements are compared with next-to-leading order QCD predictions based on diffractive parton density functions previously obtained from a QCD analysis of the inclusive diffractive cross section at H1. A good agreement is observed in the full kinematic regime, which supports the validity of QCD factorization for open charm production in diffractive DIS and γp.

A general search for new phenomena at HERA
A model--independent search for deviations from the Standard Model prediction is performed using the full $e^\pm p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. All event topologies involving isolated electrons, photons, muons, neutrinos and jets with transverse momenta above 20 GeV are investigated in a single analysis. Events are assigned to exclusive classes according to their final state. A dedicated algorithm is used to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or the invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. Variables related to angular distributions and energy sharing between final state particles are also introduced to study the final state topologies. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is observed in the phase space covered by this analysis.

The inclusive production of D∗±(2010) mesons in deep-inelastic e±p scattering is measured in the kinematic region of photon virtuality 100<Q2<1000GeV2 and inelasticity 0.02<y<0.7. Single and double differential cross sections for inclusive D∗ meson production are measured in the visible range defined by |η(D∗)|<1.5 and pT(D∗)>1.5GeV. The data were collected by the H1 experiment during the period from 2004 to 2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 351pb−1. The charm contribution, F2cc¯, to the proton structure function F2 is determined. The measurements are compared with QCD predictions.

Inclusive parton cross sections in photoproduction and photon structure
Photoproduction of 2-jet events is studied with the H1 detector at HERA. Parton cross sections are extracted from the data by an unfolding method using leading order parton-jet correlations of a QCD generator. The gluon distribution in the photon is derived in the fractional momentum range 0.04 ⩽ xγ ⩽ 1 at the average factorization scale 75 GeV2.

The cross section of the charged current process e−p → ve + hadrons is measured at HERA for transverse momenta of the hadron system larger than 25 GeV. The size of the cross section exhibits the W propagator.

Photoproduction of mesons at HERA
We present a study of Jψ meson production in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons with 820 GeV protons, performed with the H1-detector at the HERA collider at DESY. The Jψ mesons are detected via their leptonic decays both to electrons and muons. Requiring exactly two particles in the detector, a cross section of σ(ep → JψX) = (8.8±2.0±2.2) nb is determined for 30 GeV ≤ Wγp ≤ 180 GeV and Q2 ≲ 4 GeV2. Using the flux of quasi-real photons with Q2 ≲ 4 GeV2, a total production cross section of σ(γp → J/ψX) = (56±13±14) nb is derived at an average Wγp=90 GeV. The distribution of the squared momentum transfer t from the proton to the Jψ can be fitted using an exponential exp(−b∥t∥) below a ∥t∥ of 0.75 GeV2 yielding a slope parameter of b = (4.7±1.9) GeV−2.

A search for leptoquarks at HERA
A search for leptoquarks at HERA was performed in H1 using 1994 e+ p data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 3 pb−1. Single leptoquarks were searched for in direct positron-quark fusion processes taking into account possible decays into lepton-quark pairs of either the first, the second, or the third generation. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is found in the various final states studied and mass dependent exclusion limits are derived on the Yukawa couplings of the leptoquarks. Compared with earlier results from an analysis of e− p data, exclusion limits are considerably improved for leptoquarks which could be produced via e+ -valence quark fusion. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour conserving couplings, masses up to 275 GeV (depending on the leptoquark type) are excluded for coupling values larger than 4πλem. For leptoquarks with lepton flavour violating couplings, masses up to 225 GeV are excluded for couplings with leptons of the second or third generation larger than 4πλem. Fourteen possible combinations of couplings are studied and stringent exclusion limits comparable or better than any existing direct or indirect limits are obtained for each leptoquark type.

A statistical algorithm is developed to search for deviations from the Standard Model in the distributions of the scalar sum of transverse momenta or invariant mass of final state particles and to quantify their significance. A good agreement with the Standard Model prediction is observed in most of the event classes. The most significant deviation is found for a topology containing an isolated muon, missing transverse momentum and a jet, consistent with a previously reported observation.

Isolated electrons and muons in events with missing transverse momentum at HERA
A search for events with a high-energy isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum has been performed at the electron–proton collider HERA using an integrated luminosity of 13.6 pb−1 in e−p scattering and 104.7 pb−1 in e+p scattering. Within the Standard Model such events are expected to be mainly due to W boson production with subsequent leptonic decay. In e−p interactions one event is observed in the electron channel and none in the muon channel, consistent with the expectation of the Standard Model. In the e+p data a total of 18 events are seen in the electron and muon channels compared to an expectation of 12.4±1.7 dominated by W production (9.4±1.6). Whilst the overall observed number of events is broadly in agreement with the number predicted by the Standard Model, there is an excess of events with transverse momentum of the hadronic system greater than 25 GeV with 10 events found compared to 2.9±0.5 expected. The results are used to determine the cross-section for events with an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum.

PATTERNS OF SUSPENDED SEDIMENT TRANSPORT IN A COASTAL ALASKA STREAM<sup>1</sup>
ABSTRACT Suspended sediment data from a 154 ha watershed on northeast Chichagof Island, Alaska, were collected over three fall storm seasons from 1980 to 1982. Sediment rating curves for nine pooled storms explained less than 34 percent of the variation in total suspended solids (TSS). Significantly higher concentrations of suspended sediment occurred during the rising limb of storm hydrographs than for similar flows on the falling limb, accounting for hysteresis loops in TSS versus streamflow plots for individual storms. These hysteresis loops were wider during early season storms, indicating that easily transportable fine sediment may have been flushed from the upper portion of channel banks and from behind large organic debris during early season peak flows. Regression relationships (TSS versus Q) developed for the highest stormflows (&gt; 1 m 3 /s) had steeper slopes than the lower stormflows (&lt; 1 m 3 /s). Turbidity correlated well (r=0.94) with TSS for all storm‐flow data combined. Organic matter constituted an average of 35 percent (by weight) of TSS for all water quality samples.

Impact of jet-production data on the next-to-next-to-leading-order determination of HERAPDF2.0 parton distributions
Abstract The HERAPDF2.0 ensemble of parton distribution functions (PDFs) was introduced in 2015. The final stage is presented, a next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) analysis of the HERA data on inclusive deep inelastic ep scattering together with jet data as published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations. The consistency of the PDFs determined with and without the jet data demonstrates the consistency of HERA inclusive and jet-production cross-section data. The inclusion of the jet data reduced the uncertainty on the gluon PDF. Predictions based on the PDFs of HERAPDF2.0Jets NNLO give an excellent description of the jet-production data used as input.

Search for compositeness, leptoquarks and large extra dimensions in eq contact interactions at HERA
The reaction e+p→e+X is studied with the H1 detector at Hera. The data cover momentum transfers Q2 between 200GeV2 and 30000GeV2 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.6pb−1. The differential cross section dσ/dQ2 is compared to the Standard Model expectation for neutral current scattering and analysed to search for (ēe)(q̄q) contact interactions. No evidence for new phenomena is observed. The results are used to set limits on scales within models of electron–quark compositeness, quark form factors and the exchange of virtual heavy leptoquarks. A search for gravitational effects mediated through the exchange of virtual gravitons which propagate into large extra dimensions is presented.

Jets and energy flow in photon-proton collisions at HERA
Properties of the hadronic final state in photoproduction events with large transverse energy are studied at the electron-proton collider HERA. Inclusive D*± meson and associated dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Inclusive D*± production is measured in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA with the H1 detector. In addition, the production of dijets in events with a D*± meson is investigated. The analysis covers values of photon virtuality 2 ≤ Q2 ≤ 100 GeV2 and of inelasticity 0.05≤y≤0.7. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of Q2 and x and of various D*± meson and jet observables. Within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties all measured cross sections are found to be adequately described by next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, based on the photon–gluon fusion process and DGLAP evolution, without the need for an additional resolved component of the photon beyond what is included at NLO. A reasonable description of the data is also achieved by a prediction based on the CCFM evolution of partons involving the kT-unintegrated gluon distribution of the proton.

Performance studies of a full-length prototype for the CASTOR forward calorimeter at the CMS experiment
We present performance studies of a full-length prototype for the CASTOR quartz-tungsten sampling calorimeter, installed in the very forward region of the CMS experiment at the LHC. The response linearity and energy resolution, the uniformity, as well as the showers’ spatial properties in the prototype have been studied with electrons, pions and muons of various energies. A special study was also carried out for testing the light-output with a 90-degree cut of the quartz plates of the calorimeter. The data were taken during the CASTOR test beam at CERN/SPS in 2007.

Search for contact interactions in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo>±</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math> collisions at HERA
A search for physics beyond the Standard Model in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at high negative four-momentum transfer squared Q2 is performed in e±p collisions at HERA. The differential cross section dσ/dQ2, measured using the full H1 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 446pb−1, is compared to the Standard Model prediction. No significant deviation is observed. Limits on various models predicting new phenomena at high Q2 are derived. For general four-fermion eeqq contact interaction models, lower limits on the compositeness scale Λ are set in the range 3.6 TeV to 7.2 TeV. Leptoquarks with masses MLQ and couplings λ are constrained to MLQ/λ>0.41–1.86TeV and limits on squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetric models are derived. A lower limit on the gravitational scale in 4+n dimensions of MS>0.9TeV is established for low-scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions. For the light quark radius an upper bound of Rq<0.65⋅10−18m is determined.

Determination of the integrated luminosity at HERA using elastic QED Compton events
A measurement of the integrated luminosity at the ep collider HERA is presented, exploiting the elastic QED Compton process ep \rightarrow ep. The electron and the photon are detected in the backward calorimeter of the H1 experiment. The integrated luminosity of the data recorded in 2003 to 2007 is determined with a precision of 2.3%. The measurement is found to be compatible with the corresponding result obtained using the Bethe-Heitler process.

Dose rate effects in the radiation damage of the plastic scintillators of the CMS hadron endcap calorimeter
We present measurements of the reduction of light output by plastic scintillators irradiated in the CMS detector during the 8 TeV run of the Large Hadron Collider and show that they indicate a strong dose rate effect. The damage for a given dose is larger for lower dose rate exposures. The results agree with previous measurements of dose rate effects, but are stronger due to the very low dose rates probed. We show that the scaling with dose rate is consistent with that expected from diffusion effects.

Exclusive $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 meson photoproduction with a leading neutron at HERA
A first measurement is presented of exclusive photoproduction of $$\rho ^0$$ mesons associated with leading neutrons at HERA. The data were taken with the H1 detector in the years 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $$\sqrt{s}=319$$ GeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.16 pb $$^{-1}$$ . The $$\rho ^0$$ mesons with transverse momenta $$p_T<1$$ GeV are reconstructed from their decays to charged pions, while leading neutrons carrying a large fraction of the incoming proton momentum, $$x_L>0.35$$ , are detected in the Forward Neutron Calorimeter. The phase space of the measurement is defined by the photon virtuality $$Q^2 < 2$$ GeV $$^2$$ , the total energy of the photon–proton system $$20 < W_{\gamma p}< 100$$ GeV and the polar angle of the leading neutron $$\theta _n < 0.75$$ mrad. The cross section of the reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ is measured as a function of several variables. The data are interpreted in terms of a double peripheral process, involving pion exchange at the proton vertex followed by elastic photoproduction of a $$\rho ^0$$ meson on the virtual pion. In the framework of one-pion-exchange dominance the elastic cross section of photon-pion scattering, $$\sigma ^\mathrm{el}(\gamma \pi ^+ \rightarrow \rho ^0\pi ^+)$$ , is extracted. The value of this cross section indicates significant absorptive corrections for the exclusive reaction $$\gamma p \rightarrow \rho ^0 n \pi ^+$$ .

AI assisted reader evaluation in acute CT head interpretation (AI-REACT): protocol for a multireader multicase study
A non-contrast CT head scan (NCCTH) is the most common cross-sectional imaging investigation requested in the emergency department. Advances in computer vision have led to development of several artificial intelligence (AI) tools to detect abnormalities on NCCTH. These tools are intended to provide clinical decision support for clinicians, rather than stand-alone diagnostic devices. However, validation studies mostly compare AI performance against radiologists, and there is relative paucity of evidence on the impact of AI assistance on other healthcare staff who review NCCTH in their daily clinical practice.A retrospective data set of 150 NCCTH will be compiled, to include 60 control cases and 90 cases with intracranial haemorrhage, hypodensities suggestive of infarct, midline shift, mass effect or skull fracture. The intracranial haemorrhage cases will be subclassified into extradural, subdural, subarachnoid, intraparenchymal and intraventricular. 30 readers will be recruited across four National Health Service (NHS) trusts including 10 general radiologists, 15 emergency medicine clinicians and 5 CT radiographers of varying experience. Readers will interpret each scan first without, then with, the assistance of the qER EU 2.0 AI tool, with an intervening 2-week washout period. Using a panel of neuroradiologists as ground truth, the stand-alone performance of qER will be assessed, and its impact on the readers' performance will be analysed as change in accuracy (area under the curve), median review time per scan and self-reported diagnostic confidence. Subgroup analyses will be performed by reader professional group, reader seniority, pathological finding, and neuroradiologist-rated difficulty.The study has been approved by the UK Healthcare Research Authority (IRAS 310995, approved 13 December 2022). The use of anonymised retrospective NCCTH has been authorised by Oxford University Hospitals. The results will be presented at relevant conferences and published in a peer-reviewed journal.NCT06018545.

Measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA
The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $\tau_1^b$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $\tau_1^b$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA $ep$ collider in the years 2003-2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=319\,\text{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $351.1\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity $y$, in the kinematic region $Q^2>150\,\text{GeV}^{2}$. Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $\tau_1^b$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $\tau_1^b$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and $y$. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ are available for $\tau_1^b$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$. These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA
The H1 Collaboration at HERA reports the first measurement of groomed event shape observables in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) at $\sqrt{s}=319$ GeV, using data recorded between the years 2003 and 2007 with an integrated luminosity of $351$ pb$^{-1}$. Event shapes provide incisive probes of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD. Grooming techniques have been used for jet measurements in hadronic collisions; this paper presents the first application of grooming to DIS data. The analysis is carried out in the Breit frame, utilizing the novel Centauro jet clustering algorithm that is designed for DIS event topologies. Events are required to have squared momentum-transfer $Q^2 > 150$ GeV$^2$ and inelasticity $ 0.2 < y < 0.7$. We report measurements of the production cross section of groomed event 1-jettiness and groomed invariant mass for several choices of grooming parameter. Monte Carlo model calculations and analytic calculations based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory are compared to the measurements.

Forward jet and particle production at HERA
Single particles and jets in deeply inelastic scattering at low x are measured with the H1 detector in the region away from the current jet and towards the proton remnant, known as the forward region. Hadronic final state measurements in this region are expected to be particularly sensitive to QCD evolution effects. Jet cross-sections are presented as a function of Bjorken-x for forward jets produced with a polar angle to the proton direction, theta, in the range 7 < theta < 20 degrees. Azimuthal correlations are studied between the forward jet and the scattered lepton. Charged and neutral single particle production in the forward region are measured as a function of Bjorken-x, in the range 5 < theta < 25 degrees, for particle transverse momenta larger than 1 GeV. QCD based Monte Carlo predictions and analytical calculations based on BFKL, CCFM and DGLAP evolution are compared to the data. Predictions based on the DGLAP approach fail to describe the data, except for those which allow for a resolved photon contribution.

Measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA
A measurement of inclusive jet cross-sections in deep-inelastic ep scattering at HERA is presented based on data with an integrated luminosity of 21.1 pb−1. The measurement is performed for photon virtualities Q2 between 5 and 100 GeV2, differentially in Q2, in the jet transverse energy ET, in ET2/Q2 and in the pseudorapidity ηlab. With the renormalization scale μR=ET, perturbative QCD calculations in next-to-leading order (NLO) give a good description of the data in most of the phase space. Significant discrepancies are observed only for jets in the proton beam direction with ET below 20 GeV and Q2 below 20 GeV2. This corresponds to the region in which NLO corrections are largest and further improvement of the calculations is thus of particular interest.

A measurement of charm and beauty photoproduction at the electron proton collider HERA is presented based on the simultaneous detection of a D*± meson and a muon. The correlation between the D* meson and the muon serves to separate the charm and beauty contributions and the analysis provides comparable sensitivity to both. The total and differential experimental cross sections are compared to LO and NLO QCD calculations. The measured charm cross section is in good agreement with QCD predictions including higher order effects while the beauty cross section is higher.

Measurement of charm and beauty dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA using the H1 vertex detector
A measurement of charm and beauty dijet photoproduction cross sections at the ep collider HERA is presented. Events are selected with two or more jets of transverse momentum $p_t^{jet}_{1(2)}>11(8)$ GeV in the central range of pseudo-rapidity $-0.9<\eta^{jet}_{1(2)}<1.3$. The fractions of events containing charm and beauty quarks are determined using a method based on the impact parameter, in the transverse plane, of tracks to the primary vertex, as measured by the H1 central vertex detector. Differential dijet cross sections for charm and beauty, and their relative contributions to the flavour inclusive dijet photoproduction cross section, are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading jet, the average pseudo-rapidity of the two jets and the observable $x_{\gamma}^{obs}$. Taking into account the theoretical uncertainties, the charm cross sections are consistent with a QCD calculation in next-to-leading order, while the predicted cross sections for beauty production are somewhat lower than the measurement.

Prompt photons in photoproduction at HERA
The production of prompt photons is measured in the photoproduction regime of electron–proton scattering at HERA. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 340 pb−1 collected by the H1 experiment. Cross sections are measured for photons with transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the range $6<\ensuremath{E_{T}^{\gamma}}<15$ GeV and −1.0<η γ <2.4, respectively. Cross sections for events with an additional jet are measured as a function of the transverse energy and pseudorapidity of the jet, and as a function of the fractional momenta x γ and x p carried by the partons entering the hard scattering process. The correlation between the photon and the jet is also studied. The results are compared with QCD predictions based on the collinear and on the k T factorization approaches.

Search for new physics in e±q contact interactions at HERA
Deep-inelastic e±p scattering at high squared momentum transfer Q2 up to 30 000 GeV2 is used to search for eq contact interactions associated to scales far beyond the Hera centre of mass energy. The neutral current cross section measurements dσ/dQ2, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 16.4 pb−1 of e−p data and 100.8 pb−1 of e+p data, are well described by the Standard Model and are analysed to set constraints on new phenomena. For conventional contact interactions lower limits are set on compositeness scales Λ ranging between 1.6–5.5 TeV. Couplings and masses of leptoquarks and squarks in R-parity violating supersymmetry are constrained to M/λ>0.3–1.4 TeV. A search for low scale quantum gravity effects in models with large extra dimensions provides limits on the effective Planck scale of MS>0.8 TeV. A form factor analysis yields a bound on the radius of light quarks of Rq<1.0×10−18 m.

Results from a test of a PbCu liquid argon calorimeter
Results from a test with a lead-copper calorimeter in liquid argon are presented. The electromagnetic energy resolution obtained is 10%/√E. For hadronic showers the software weighting technique is demonstrated to work. A hadronic energy resolution of 50%/√E is found.

A search for single photons at petra
A search for single photons, produced in e+e− collisions together with particles interacting only weakly with matter, has been performed using the CELLO detector operating at the PETRA storage ring. From the absence of any signal, an upper limit is set at 15 (90% CL) on the number of light neutrino species, and lower limits on various supersymmetric particle masses are derived. For massless photinos, mass degenerate scalar partners of the left- and right-handed electrons are excluded below 37.7 GeV/c2 (90% CL).

Search for excited electrons in ep collisions at HERA
A search for excited electrons is performed using the full $e^{\pm}p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to a total luminosity of 475 pb$^{-1}$. The electroweak decays of excited electrons ${e}^{*}\to{e}{\gamma}$, ${e}^{*}\to{e}Z$ and ${e}^{*}{\to}\nu W$ with subsequent hadronic or leptonic decays of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons are considered. No evidence for excited electron production is found. Mass dependent exclusion limits on $e^*$ production cross sections and on the ratio $f/{\Lambda}$ of the coupling to the compositeness scale are derived within gauge mediated models. These limits extend the excluded region compared to previous excited electron searches. The $e^*$ production via contact interactions is also addressed for the first time in $ep$ collisions.

Multi-lepton production at high transverse momenta in ep collisions at HERA
Processes leading to a final state with at least two high transverse momentum leptons (electrons or muons) are studied using the full e±p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 463 pb−1. Di-lepton and tri-lepton event classes are investigated. Cross sections of the production of e+e− and μ+μ− pairs are derived in a restricted phase space dominated by photon–photon collisions. In general, good agreement is found with Standard Model predictions. Events are observed with a total scalar sum of lepton transverse momenta above 100GeV where the Standard Model expectation is low. In this region, combining di-lepton and tri-lepton classes, five events are observed in e+p collisions, compared to a Standard Model expectation of 0.96±0.12, while no such event is observed in e−p data for 0.64±0.09 expected.

Measurement of isolated photon production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
The production of isolated photons in deep-inelastic scattering $ep\to e \gamma X$ is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. The measurement is performed in the kinematic range of negative four-momentum transfer squared $4<Q^2<150 $~GeV$^2$ and a mass of the hadronic system $W_X>50$ GeV. The analysis is based on a total integrated luminosity of 227~pb$^{-1}$. The production cross section of isolatedphotons with a transverse energy in the range $3 < E_T^\gamma < 10$ GeV and pseudorapidity range $-1.2 < \eta^\gamma < 1.8$ is measured as a function of $E_T^\gamma$, $\eta^\gamma$ and $Q^2$. Isolated photon cross sections are also measured for events with no jets or at least one hadronic jet. The measurements are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo generators modelling the photon radiation from the quark and the electron lines, as well as with calculations at leading and next to leading order in the strong coupling. The predictions significantly underestimate the measured cross sections.

Events with isolated leptons and missing transverse momentum and measurement of W production at HERA
Events with high energy isolated electrons, muons or tau leptons and missing transverse momentum are studied using the full e^\pm p data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 474 pb^{-1}. Within the Standard Model, events with isolated leptons and missing transverse momentum mainly originate from the production of single W bosons. The total single W boson production cross section is measured as 1.14 \pm 0.25 (stat.) \pm 0.14 (sys.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. The data are also used to establish limits on the WW\gamma gauge couplings and for a measurement of the W boson polarisation.

Measurement of beauty photoproduction near threshold using di-electron events with the H1 detector at HERA
The cross section for $ep \rightarrow e\, b\bar{b} X$ in photoproduction is measured with the H1 detector at the ep-collider HERA. The decay channel $b\bar{b} \rightarrow ee X'$ is selected by identifying the semi-electronic decays of the b-quarks. The total production cross section is measured in the kinematic range given by the photon virtuality Q 2≤1 GeV2, the inelasticity 0.05≤y≤0.65 and the pseudorapidity of the b-quarks $|\eta(b)|, |\eta(\bar{b})|\leq2$ . The differential production cross section is measured as a function of the average transverse momentum of the beauty quarks 〈P T (b)〉 down to the threshold. The results are compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV
A bstract A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 of proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msqrt> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:msqrt> </mml:math> = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Measurement of the Q2 dependence of the charged and neutral current cross sections in e±p scattering at HERA
The Q2 dependence and the total cross sections for charged and neutral current processes are measured in e±p reactions for transverse momenta of the outgoing lepton larger than 25 GeV. Comparable size of cross sections for the neutral current process and for the weak charged current process are observed above Q2 ∥ 5000 GeV2. Using the shape and magnitude of the charged current cross section we determine a propagator mass of mW = 84−7+10 GeV.

Scaling violations of the proton structure function F2 at small x
An analysis is presented of scaling violations of the proton structure function F2(x,Q2) measured with the H1 detector at HERA in the range of Bjorken x values between x = 3 × 10−4 and 10−2 for four-momentum transfers Q>2 larger than 8.7 GeV2. The structure function F2(x,Q2) is observed to rise linearly with ln Q2. Under the assumption that the observed scaling violations at small x ⩽ 0.01 are described correctly by perturbative QCD, an estimate is obtained of the gluon distribution function G(x,Q02) at Q22 = 20 GeV2.

Measurement of internal jet structure in dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Internal jet structure in dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering is measured with the H1 detector at HERA. Jets with transverse energies ET,Breit > 5 GeV are selected in the Breit frame employing k⊥ and cone jet algorithms. In the kinematic region of ssquared momentum transfers 10 < Q2 ⪅s 120 GeV2 and Bjorken−x values 2 < 10−4 ⪅ xBj ⪅ 8 × 10−3, jet shapes and subjet multiplicities are measured as a function of a resolution parameter. Distributions of both observables are corrected for detector effects and presented as functions of the transverse jet energy and jet pseudo-rapidity. Dependences of the jet shape and the average number of subjets on the transverse energy and the pseudo-rapidity of the jet are observed. With increasing transverse jet energies and decreasing pseudo-rapidities, i.e. towards the photon hemisphere, the jets are more collimated. QCD models give a fair description of the data.

Three-jet production in deep-inelastic scattering at HERA
Three-jet production is studied for the first time in deep-inelastic positron-proton scattering. The measurement carried out with the H1 detector at HERA covers a large range of four-momentum transfer squared 5 < Q^2 < 5000 GeV^2 and invariant three-jet masses 25 < M_(3jet) < 140 GeV. Jets are defined by the inclusive k_T algorithm in the Breit frame. The size of the three-jet cross section and the ratio of the three-jet to the dijet cross section R_(3/2) are described over the whole phase space by the predictions of perturbative QCD in next-to-leading order. The shapes of angular jet distributions deviate significantly from a uniform population of the available phase space but are well described by the QCD calculation.

Leptoquarks and compositeness scales from a contact interaction analysis of deep inelastic e±p scattering at HERA
A contact interaction analysis is presented to search for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model in deep inelastic $e^\pm p \rightarrow e^\pm \, hadrons$ scattering. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA and correspond to integrated luminosities of $0.909 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ and $2.947 \ {\rm pb}^{-1}$ for electron and positron beams, respectively. The differential cross sections $d\sigma / dQ^2$ are measured in the $Q^2$ range bet\-ween $160 \ \GeV^2$ and $20,000 \ \GeV^2$. The absence of any significant deviation from the Standard Model prediction is used to constrain the couplings and masses of new leptoquarks and to set limits on electron--quark compositeness scales and on the radius of light quarks.

A measurement of the t dependence of the helicity structure of diffractive ρ meson electroproduction at HERA
The helicity structure of the diffractive electroproduction of ρ mesons, e+p→e+ρ+Y, is studied in a previously unexplored region of large four-momentum transfer squared at the proton vertex, t: 0<t′<3 GeV2, where t′=|t|−|t|min. The data used are collected with the H1 detector at HERA in the kinematic domain 2.5<Q2<60 GeV2, 40<W<120 GeV. No t dependence of the r0400 spin density matrix element is found. A significant t dependent helicity non-conservation from the virtual photon to the ρ meson is observed for the spin density matrix element combinations r500+2r511 and r100+2r111. These t dependences are consistently described by a perturbative QCD model based on the exchange of two gluons.

Measurement of prompt photon cross sections in photoproduction at HERA
Results are presented on the photoproduction of isolated prompt photons, inclusively and associated with jets, in the γp center of mass energy range 142 < W < 266 GeV.The cross sections are measured for the transverse momentum range of the photons 5 < E γ T < 10 GeV and for associated jets with E jet T > 4.5 GeV.They are measured differentially as a function of E γ T , E jet T , the pseudorapidities η γ and η jet and estimators of the momentum fractions x γ and x p of the incident photon and proton carried by the constituents participating in the hard process.In order to further investigate the underlying dynamics, the angular correlation between the prompt photon and the jet in the transverse plane is studied.Predictions by perturbative QCD calculations in next to leading order are about 30% below the inclusive prompt photon data after corrections for hadronisation and multiple interactions, but are in reasonable agreement with the results for prompt photons associated with jets.Comparisons with the predictions of the event generators PYTHIA and HERWIG are also presented.

Photoproduction of dijets with high transverse momenta at HERA
Differential dijet cross sections are measured in photoproduction in the region of photon virtualities Q^2 < 1 GeV^2 with the H1 detector at the HERA ep collider using an integrated luminosity of 66.6 pb^{-1}. Jets are defined with the inclusive k_T algorithm and a minimum transverse momentum of the leading jet of 25 GeV is required. Dijet cross sections are measured in direct and resolved photon enhanced regions separately. Longitudinal proton momentum fractions up to 0.7 are reached. The data compare well with predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading order QCD and parton showers and with next-to-leading order QCD calculations corrected for hadronisation effects.

A search for excited neutrinos in <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" altimg="si1.gif" overflow="scroll"><mml:msup><mml:mi>e</mml:mi><mml:mo>−</mml:mo></mml:msup><mml:mi>p</mml:mi></mml:math> collisions at HERA
A search for excited neutrinos is performed using the full $e^{-}p$ data sample collected by the H1 experiment at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV, corresponding to a total luminosity of 184 pb$^{-1}$.The electroweak decays of excited neutrinos ${\nu}^{*}{\to}{\nu}{\gamma}$, ${\nu}^{*}{\to}{\nu}Z$ and ${\nu}^{*}{\to}eW$ with subsequent hadronic or leptonic decays of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons are considered. No evidence for excited neutrino production is found. Mass dependent exclusion limits on $\nu^*$ production cross sections and on the ratio of the coupling to the compositeness scale $f/{\Lambda}$ are derived within gauge mediated models. A limit on $f/{\Lambda}$, independent of the relative couplings to the SU(2) and U(1) gauge bosons, is also determined. These limits extend the excluded region to higher masses than has been possible in previous excited neutrino searches.

Search for lepton flavour violation at HERA
A search for second and third generation scalar and vector leptoquarks produced in ep collisions via the lepton flavour violating processes ep→μX and ep→τX is performed by the H1 experiment at HERA. The full data sample taken at a centre-of-mass energy s=319GeV is used for the analysis, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 245 pb−1 of e+p and 166 pb−1 of e−p collision data. No evidence for the production of such leptoquarks is observed in the H1 data. Leptoquarks produced in e±p collisions with a coupling strength of λ=0.3 and decaying with the same coupling strength to a muon–quark pair or a tau–quark pair are excluded at 95% confidence level up to leptoquark masses of 712 GeV and 479 GeV, respectively.

Measurement of di-jet cross-sections in photoproduction and photon structure
The production of hard di-jet events in photoproduction at HERA is dominated by resolved photon processes in which a parton in the photon with momentum fraction xγ is scattered from a parton in the proton. These processes are sensitive to the quark and gluon content of the photon. The differential di-jet cross-section dσ/dlog(xγ) is presented here, measured in tagged photoproduction at HERA using data taken with the H1 detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 7.2 pb−1. Using a restricted data sample at high transverse jet energy, ET,jet>6 GeV, the effective parton density fγ,eff(xγ)=q(xγ)+q̄(xγ)+9/4g(xγ) in the photon in leading order QCD is measured down to xγ= 0.05 from which the gluon density in the photon is derived.

Low Q2 jet production at HERA and virtual photon structure
The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in jet production at the HERA ep collider, using data collected by the H1 experiment. Measurements of the differential inclusive jet cross-sections dσep/dEt∗ and dσep/dη∗, where Et∗ and η∗ are the transverse energy and the pseudorapidity of the jets in the virtual photon-proton centre of mass frame, are presented for 0<Q2<49GeV2 and 0.3<y<0.6. The interpretation of the results in terms of the structure of the virtual photon is discussed. The data are best described by QCD calculations which include a partonic structure of the virtual photon that evolves with Q2.
